Beginning October 5th and ending January 27th we have 7 birthdays and 5 holidays. The cool fall air brought in a wave of anxiety as I realize how much shopping, celebrating and togetherness that means. What are your thoughts on navigating? I'm not a big shop online person but seriously considering becoming one. We usually do dinner and a movie for the birthdays back to the house for cake and presents. I don't see that happening. My mind is spinning this morning ugh.

Jennifer, sorry. Just when you think you've got a handle on this, another fun event gets changed. I hadn't even thought about Christmas yet. I will probably order online and ship to each person, unless things radically improve between now and then.

I do a lot of online shopping already. We don't buy for many people any more. One dd and her husband live in California. She had been coming here for Christmas for the past few years so we generally give her gifts here, except if something is really large, then we have it sent directly to their house. This year she will not be coming so we will send everything to them.
I'm more "worried" about Thanksgiving at this point. We usually have it with my sil and bil that live here in Santa Fe. I was talking to my sil recently and we're trying to figure out how we want to do it. Do dinner at one of our homes (she volunteered to cook) and stay socially distanced. Or do dinner at our own homes and maybe get together for pie.

one of my best friends is having a birthday gathering in a couple weeks but he knows my MO when it comes to declining anything related to a gathering. i have declined pretty much all invites for all parties and showers (except my aunt's funeral and gathering in august that left me panicked i'd caught the corona). but this time i have accepted i'm ok with it since he's keeping this extremely small (me, him and 1 or 2 of the rest of our crew). i also already declined the surprise party his wife is throwing for him the week before at the beach. so i figure this seems chill enough and sparse enough. it will be in his backyard, which is really big and has its own gated entrance so you don't have to go through the house. if i use the house to use the bathroom, i will keep my mask on.
for thanksgiving we won't get together with anyone except my ex husband's aunt who i'm still really close with and only if she wants to (she is a widow and lives alone). so really most likely no one at all. for christmas same deal. probably won't get together with anyone. my mom and dad are flying into town for the girls' 11th birthday in january but i told my parents they have to stay in a hotel this time and i'll probably have them take a test while they are here before we see them.

Halloween: What are you guys doing about Halloween? Are you going to give out candy? I've been reading the suggestions from the state of Connecticut and I'm not sure what to do. I worry that if we shut off our lights we'll get vandalized, but I'm not sure I want to do the work of bagging up the candy. If I do bag up the candy I might pick it up with tongs to put it in the trick-or-treat bags, but then you end up close to the child. Have no idea how many children will be out? Think maybe the middle schoolers will be out. Also if the kids no show then we have left over candy. We usually take left-over candy to the police station but they might not want donated candy this year. Guess there will be more about Halloween closer to the date.

We will probably turn lights out and go to bed early. Everyone is running pretty scared where I live, NorCal BTW.

We haven't given out candy for Halloween since we moved here to Santa Fe. We are in a development with just about no children.

Our development is hugely popular on Halloween.
Our city is allowing it this year.
My husband and I were talking about how to hand out candy. We will set up an 8 foot table and have candy on the table. We will be outside to watch and it will be self serve.

When I was a kid there was one house in our area where the people just set out a huge bowl of candy. It was kind of the honor system that each kid only took one piece. I'm sure there were kids that took more, but it seemed to work well. When the candy was gone, it was gone (or maybe they refilled during the evening). I also remember one of my frind's mother made homemade candy apples. We always looked forward to them. I can't imagine in this day anyone letting their kid eat something homemade.

Since I’ve had my own kids to take around trick or treating I just put out a container with candy for kids to grab from. Honestly to me it literally makes not one bit of difference if a single kid walks off with all of it or several kids take a few pieces each. Every year there is always some left so I guess they’re just taking a few each. We won’t be trick or treating this year so I told the girls I’ll just buy them candy.
They still want to dress up though so we may just get together with one of their friends outdoors so they can see each other’s costumes.

i never care to see the other kids but then besides my own kids, i've never been all that excited to be around kids. so the no constantly going to the door to answer the trick or treaters will work for me just fine from here on out for the rest of my years! i am a scrooge.

Don't do Halloween, but if I had little kids they wouldn't be doing Halloween either. It's not a real holiday anyway! Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, and New Years will be spent at home, just the two of us. It's not worth risking our health, or the health of family. We'll probably do Zoom cocktails on Thanksgiving with my sister and her family, and my dad and stepmother. And the day after Thanksgiving, we're trying to organize an online escape room thing for our family and my nephew's friends. It's what we did in person last year and it was a blast so we'll try an online version to do something 'together' even though we're physically apart. I think there are plenty of ways to make the best of it and still keep yourself safe this holiday season. Zoom cocktails or coffee/desserts online, watching a movie while being linked in video chat, online escape rooms. Watch the same movie at the same time, etc. Make it work, it's not like we don't have electronic mediums to connect us in a way that we never had before, so I say let's make use of technology! finreporter, I'd be wary about your friend's smaller GTG since it's coming AFTER what sounds like a bigger party. Can you move your smaller gathering up to BEFORE his larger party? That way you're not exposing yourself to anything he might have come into contact with during the bigger party.
