Good morning and a happy Columbus Day all....guess none of us really celebrate it anymore....I know I remember the little child’s poem which began “in 14 hundred and ninety two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue”...well that is probably no longer taught in schools but it was a great way for a kid to remember the year Columbus sailed here. We live in the best country in the world, and I think its a great day to celebrate that and all those brave explorers from years ago..... Bet CJ might be able to find a good deal on a fridge today, many folks try to do quick updates to their homes in anticipation of Thanksgiving and Christmas. Dh and I bought our existing fridge only a few years ago at Lowes....and they did offer an extension to the factory service plan. Not sure if that was through Lowes or not...Phyl is right, check the height of the fridge, also the depth too. I remember my friend and her Dh bought a new fridge before they renovated their kitchen (which severely needed a renovation) and the new fridge, which is huge, stuck way way further out from the counter space. It looked pretty stupid for awhile. 2 years later they did a complete kitchen renovation and now it fits in just fine. CJ will be fine, and I really really hope that she is able to find something that is available and will work in her space. That is a nice low electric bill she has....but even if she only saves a few dollars a month with a newer energy saver fridge, well that is enough to pick another fat quarter.
When I went to get my mom’s house ready for sale, Dh and I had our hands full. My moms town had junk pickup every Friday and we took full advantage of that...but some stuff was too big to put out on the curb (like her old kitchen cabinets). And we also got a huge dumpster- completely filled to overflowing that. Anyway- when they came for the large items I wanted removed....I mentioned to Dh that perhaps they should take the old fridge in the basement. I figure that fridge was from the late 50’s....based upon its style. It looked to be (on the outside) in great shape. Inside it had not run for years.....but was full of empty egg cartons which had once held eggs that decomposed and were so far gone that it no longer smelled. I was super happy to pay them an additional $50 to cart that dinosaur off (and spared Dh the miserable task of getting it up my mothers rickety basement steps).
Gotta make a meal for a family in my church....the mom is being treated for a severe UTI and has kidney stones. And i am going to sew today, once I get some stuff done around here. BBL ginny

Hello Crafters Phyl - Thanks for your tips and information on the refrigerator. Ginny - I remember that saying about Columbus That's nice of you to make the meal for the family, I'm sure it will be appreciated. I had success this morning buying a new refrigerator at Lowe's. They had one left of the model that I wanted. There was also a display on the floor so I was able to look at it and I think it will work fine in my house. It's nothing fancy, but I don't want to put money into this house since I want to move and I need the money for that. It was a really nice experience and the salesperson was helpful. I'm going to do the survey from my receipt to tell them about the good service. They are going to be able to deliver it on Wednesday so I need to spend the time until then clearing a path to the kitchen. I'm not sure if they'll come in my front or back door, so I have to clear both ways. I wanted to get your opinions on something - the temperature in my refrigerator went up to 50 degrees, so I'm throwing out most thing except for some condiments. But I have several individual applesauce containers and I wonder if those will be alright to still eat. Would you still eat them? Thanks again for all your support and information. I'll be glad to get this new refrigerator installed and working, I've needed a new one for awhile. Hope everyone gets to do some crafting and that you have a good day

CJ, I'm so glad you had a pleasant experience buying your new fridge. I would actually think that most things would still be fine to eat at 50 degrees and I'm sure the applesauce will definitely be ok. I do remember now that when ours was dying we put everything perishable into coolers with ice from our upright freezer and I think maybe we actually went to the local convenience store and bought ice to keep the food cold. Yes we did... I remember that now. Luckily we, for some odd reason, have several coolers. It's a pleasant fall day here. A little cool but sunny and a little breeze. I did a bunch of cleaning and am now just going to relax and crochet the rest of the day. This week will be busy. DD is having surgery tomorrow. Dgd is having an ultra sound to check on her baby. She just found out she's having one which I think I mentioned before. Supposedly no one else knows yet but my dd, sil, and my dh and me but I doubt that. Dgd usually shares everything. Well now you guys know too

Yay!!!!! CJ- I am so really super happy that you were able to get a new fridge and that its coming on Wednesday. Think its always a wise move to go with simpler appliances anyway- less stuff to break and less complicated systems. My friend had to have her fridge serviced- problems with the automatic ice maker. I don’t have one of those so I dont have to worry about it breaking! Ha ha ha. My fridge came from Lowes- and they did a great job of figuring out the best way to get the new one in...yes, the doors needed to come off but it worked out just fine.I am sure they will be able to make it work somehow.. Congrats- and I am so glad you found one that is still in stock. Regarding the applesauce, if its those single servings that are usually sold un refrigerated in the fruit section of the store, I think they will be absolutely fine. They are sealed...and are meant to be shelf stable.
Dropped off the meal to the family- who were just taking the mom to the hospital for her daily antibiotic treatment. Then came home....did some housework and Dd#2 stopped in for a short while. Got Bible study tonight so I most likely wont be back. I did get a few minutes of sewing on the panel quilt....more tomorrow. Ginny

Ruth- fall weather is so uplifting and pleasant....hope you did not overdo it cleaning, sometimes I remember you clean like a white tornado and get tons done. Always good not to overdo. Hope that DD’s procedure goes well tomorrow- and DGD’s sono too. Yes we all know now about the little one to be!!! Hope that the baby is perfect and growing well. G

I didn't get one with an ice maker either. One of the things that was complained about most in the refrigerator reviews was the ice maker not functioning properly or at all. Here it would just get jammed with minerals in no time and that would be the end of making ice anyway.Dh uses a lot of ice because he drinks only cold beverages...iced coffee and sometimes Iced tea. We have nice ice cube trays that work just fine.

Me too! Ice cube trays (and i typically make a bag of ice from dumping ice cube trays into a large zip lock- then I always have enough). I know some folks love their water dispensers and ice cube dispensers..if they would not break I would love them too. Ha ha ha
got a tiny bit more done on the panel quilt and hope to return to work on it this afternoon.
Cold and rainy here today. BBL Ginny

Hello Crafters I'm another one that doesn't care about the ice maker. The one in my current fridge has been broke for many years and whenever I wanted ice I just filled up an old fashioned ice cube tray and that worked fine. I meant to mention a few things from yesterday. One was when I was in Lowe's I was looking for some gardening/work type gloves since I like to use them for lots of things and while I was looking at the choices some guy came up and stood right next to me looking at gloves too. I couldn't believe it, he almost just pushed me out of the way. I stepped back and let him pick his gloves and then I finished looking and picking some. Besides just the rudeness, do some people not even care if they get the virus? I'm just shaking my head. I stopped in the grocery store too and was looking for a few non-refrigerated things. I found most stuff but no canned carrots, no McCormick's Brown or Turkey gravy mix and no Renuzit Air Fresheners. The gravy mix and air fresheners seem like such random things to not be in stock. I figure either I like what everyone else does or I like things that most people don't and they don't get stocked I'm busy moving things out of rooms and around in other rooms today to get ready for the delivery tomorrow. Hopefully I'll have 2 paths cleared for them and one will work. I'm also going to clean behind some of these furniture-type pieces I'm moving since I rarely pull them out to clean For anyone interested I saw where the lady at the "From My Carolina Home" blog has a new quilt along that started on October 2nd and runs through October 30th. It's a row by row in fall/autumn fabrics and you can see her blocks on her blog each week. I thought some of you would enjoy seeing the quilt blocks she's made so far (her fabrics are pretty) and others might want to save the PDF patterns while they are free. I love the tree blocks she made in Week 2, she really used some pretty fabric. I may try to do this one using my fall/autumn fabrics if I can finish up a few other quilt things first. Here are a few links: frommycarolinahome.com/2020/10/02/autumn-jubilee-quilt-along-week-1/frommycarolinahome.files.wordpress.com/2020/10/ajqa-week-1.pdffrommycarolinahome.com/2020/10/09/autumn-jubilee-quilt-along-week-2/frommycarolinahome.files.wordpress.com/2020/10/ajqa-tree-row.pdfTake care everyone and have a good day!

Ok so we all will pretend that we do not see Joanns free shipping....ha ha ha. I gotta say I do have some elastic loaded in my cart at Joanns- in the event I have to make more masks. I could of course try to convince myself to buy more fabric. Like for that lovely autumn jubilee quilt along.....
CJ- thanks for posting the links for that quilt along. Its so pretty and yes her fabrics are really exquisite. Think I prefer the star row- only because it uses all the different fabrics. So I pose the question to you....as I have seen the same thing! Why are we not able to get McCormick (or here any brand even store brand)gravy mixes?? I don’t get it- and the gravy mix I use in recipes. They have been out of stock for weeks in my local store. I have had no trouble with the air fresheners (the little ones that are shaped like rounded pyramids?). When we were in North Carolina in August, I was shocked by the rudeness of some who just did not seem to care a hoot about social distancing and masks. I think some individuals just like to target others and see if they squirm. think I would have done the same thing and stepped back....letting him get what he wanted, but I might also have said something also. I have little tolerance for rudeness. Yes the one big thing about getting a new appliance - it forces you to clean in all kinds of places that we rarely get to. Do you know when your fridge is supposed to arrive yet?? I am so happy for you....hope it fits the space perfectly and relieves some worry.
Ruth, you must be getting pretty far on that afghan - any news on DD’s procedure today??
Sue, Phyl and Rene (we miss you !). Hope each of you has a good day. G

Hello Crafters Ginny - Hope you get some good buys at JoAnn's. They had better get our McCormick's gravy mix back in stock My new refrigerator was delivered today. It was an easy process, they were able to take out the old one by taking off the doors and they brought in the new one without the handles. It was a really quick process too. I put a thermometer in my freezer and it quickly got to 0 degrees, so I put all the frozen food back in. The refrigerated part is a bit different. I'm getting different temperature readings on different shelves. Most of it is registering 40 degrees, but one area to the front of one shelf is showing 50 degrees. I did put my condiments and applesauce and fruit cups back in there and I guess I'll wait and see how it is tomorrow. I've read it can take up to 24 hours to get the temperatures good. I finished piecing my bowtie quilt top together yesterday and I'll try to get a picture for you when I can figure out how to display it. I have a portable display wall that is kind of on a frame. It's too big (72x72) for me to keep it assembled all the time, but I'll put it together so I can take some pictures. A new quilt along started today at Pat Sloan's website today - it's called Cozy Things and uses a layer cake and yardage. Looking at the first block I'm wondering why she said a layer cake if you are just cutting them up, but I guess you could fussy cut a layer cake. I might not use the fabrics I'd planned for this and instead looking through my stash since it doesn't seem like it's going to use any 10 inch pieces. Here's a link to Block 1: www.ilovetomakequilts.com/2020/10/-free-block-1-cozy-things.htmlI'm tired now from moving all the stuff around yesterday and moving it all back today. I hope I can go to the grocery store in a day or so, I miss having yogurt, milk and cheese Take care everyone!
