This week I give myself credit for tracking, weighing and measuring, attending my WW virtual meeting, keeping up with my online support groups, and meditating. I have gratitude that my husband and I are still healthy.

Credit to myself for tracking everything even though I went over my calorie allowance for the week, and for exercising within the constraints of an injury.

How do you handle stress in ways other than by eating?

I talk things out with myself, call a friend or a relative, do meditation, exercise if I'm in the mood, get on the computer to pass the time, do deep breathing. For me this would also apply to avoiding emotional eating.

Tough question for me. It seems I mostly handle stress with eating. Or sometimes I handle extreme stress by not eating. Either way it's about food. Another way is spending time online in various ways, not always productively but mindlessly and that's good in some ways.

When you are overeating how do you get yourself to cut back on your eating?

I have to get myself to acknowledge it in the first place. Sometimes I go into portion creep and seem oblivious to it. Once I acknowledge it I then start to talk with myself. This takes awhile sometimes and then I come up with a way to make small steps to lower my eating. I don't seem to do well when I try to cut back all at once.

How important is flavor and taste to you?

I want my food to have flavor and taste good but I tend to eat plain food. I'm not all about flavor and taste though, mouth feel, texture is important to me too. I'm not adventuresome and I don't often try new foods.

Flavor and taste is very important to me. I enjoy trying new foods. When I (used to) eat out, it was always to independent restaurants, never chains, and sampling new offers on their menus. I think this contributes to overeating though.

There is debate over the term “will power” regarding saying the lack of will power is the reason people have a problem with being overweight/obese. What are your thoughts on will power? If not will power what mental actions on your part contributed to your success?

I think a lot of things contribute to what people call will power, or the ability to keep a promise to yourself. When I started my weight loss journey this time I had a lot of support. I was strongly determined because of my health problems, I joined WW a formal program with a food plan, I was on the old WW message boards for support and to learn how to do the program, I had been successful on WW twice before so I knew if I stuck to the plan I would be successful, I knew what my rate of weight loss would be so I didn't fret over that. All these things helped me stay on plan. As the years have gone by me learning to talk back to my sabotaging thoughts to over eat has helped me stay on plan. I'm not perfect but most often I can make the better choice. So when I set a behavioral goal I work to have things in place to support my will power.
