Good morning and Happy Monday!
All crafters are welcome here as we discuss crafting, life and our weight loss journey. Crafting includes actual hands on crafting, such as crochetting, knitting, sewing, quilting, needlepoint, painting, jewelry making, etc.....plus reading craft catalogs, craft blogs, watching craft you tubes or other crafting videos, chatting here about crafting, chatting with another person about crafting, reading craft emails, thinking about crafting, organizing crafting supplies, going into craft stores or the craft aisle in a store , attending craft fairs,or any other activity that inspires or directs your mind toward a crafting activity- even visiting us here to join in our posts!! There are plenty of days in which the closest we get to crafting is a visit here, so even if you have no time to craft, we would love to hear from you. We welcome newcomers to our friendly discussion! So glad you are here!! Please feel free to stop in and say hello

Well from looking at the date as I start us off for the week- well its an eye opener to see that next week brings us into December. And Thanksgiving is here in a few short days. Yikes!! At 5:50 am I am not feeling terribly philosophical- but just very surprised with how time has flown by.
CJ- thanks for the heads up on the binding of the 3 yard quilts. I really like a lot about how the directions appear and seem to give good guidance for fabric selection and pattern. (I am not that nervy with my fabric selection yet). I just like how it breaks it down into simple use of fabric, so it does not seem overwhelming. And yes, I prefer a wider binding also...but that is pretty easy to compensate for by buying an additional yard of the fabric you will be using for a binding (and the extra yard is a lot). Did you find anything that caught your eye on the blogs? Got heavy rain here this am in my area....hope you are having pleasant and dry weather.
Ruth- well the important thing is that you figured out that you have to add more rows to that pocket shawl- and now can adjust accordingly. I am excited for you - your Joanns order arrives today! Hope that you get all the yarn you ordered and that the box is full of inspiration for you.
Phyl- hope you had a good weekend and are feeling well/pain free.
Sue- keep us updated on how your DGD is doing. Is this the East Coast DGD or the West Coast one?
Plans for Thanksgiving will be difficult this year, for sure. Ruth, yes, my church is still meeting. As of the present my area does not have any additional restrictions. My church services are broadcast throughout the building- so the sanctuary is at less than 50% capacity, and worshipers can also sit in the new church gym or the fellowship hall- which are even lower in capacity and the service being held upstairs is broadcast in those rooms. I hope to attend the Thanksgiving Eve service. I do know that most churches have resumed services here, just not sure how they are managing. Dd#1’s church has expanded to a second service so that their sanctuary is below the capacity deemed appropriate.
As of the present, all my kids and their families/spouses will be here on Thursday- and we will still be below the governors guidelines for a family gathering. My Ds lives with me...so he is not an extra at all and is part of my bubble. Dd#1 has pretty much been on lockdown with her family for 2 weeks, so she is ok (as are her kids) and DD#2 and DSIL #2 are being super cautious. Here Thanksgiving is supposed to be a warm day, so I will most likely open some windows a bit (the house usually gets too warm from the oven being on all day anyway). I have spoken to others who are pretty much doing the same, just visiting with those who they would normally see - guess that is staying in your bubble.
Ok better get busy. Yes, I am hoping to get back to quilting today. Ginny

Hello Crafters - Hope you are all doing well today Ginny - I'm glad you are able to see your family for Thanksgiving. I heard a news story on the radio and opening the windows was one of the things they suggested, eating outside (if possible) was another. I didn't see anything on the blogs yesterday that interested me, but I do always enjoy checking them out. Several blogs are doing a Virtual Cookie Exchange with quilt projects from December 1-4, so that should be fun to check out. I think I've decided on my next project - it's a Double Slice Layer Cake quilt using the tutorial from MSQC. I have a layer cake that I've been wanting to use for something and I've been wanting to make this quilt, so I think this is the one I'll do next. I like that it's all straight line piecing - no triangles or snowball corners. Hopefully I can work on it this week. It's very windy here today, sunny, but cool. I was thinking that we've had more wind this fall than it seems like we did in the spring! Hope you are all doing well and that you getting to do some crafting. Take care!

CJ- just checked out the double slice layer cake quilt on MSQ- how adorable!!! I can imagine with the right fabrics that this could really pop- its a great quilt to make with either scrappy or coordinated fabrics.Looks like something you will be able to handle easily- as you said no triangles or flying geese or anything like that. Let the beauty of the fabric and the piecing shine. What color scheme are you going to use for this?? The virtual cookie exchange for quilts sounds like a hoot, and a nice way to share ideas and inspiration.
Just listened to my excellent county executive....and I think this will be the last study group meeting I will attend for awhile. Also I just decided to attend the Thanksgiving Eve service, but virtually. I just think its smart and honestly, I dislike going out at night anyway.
We had the same weather here CJ- a little bit cool and windy. Not a bad weather day once the rain blew out. Got a few inside projects done today, as I reorganize closets. Also got the last bit of quilting done on the panel quilt. Time to trim it up and start looking at the binding.
Have a good night all G

CJ, the layer cake quilt sounds interesting. I'm going to go to their site when I'm done here to check it out. And the best thing is that it sounds like you already have the fabric you need to make one.A virtual cookie exchange sounds interesting. Do they exchange quilt ideas or cookie recipes or just exchange pretend cookies?
Ginny, well I don't think that the virus police will be out on Thanksgiving checking people's homes for how many people are in each home. One of the governors in our great country told people to call the police and complain about their neighbors having too much company. Well I sure can guess how well that will go over with the police. I know that none of them are going to enforce a thing like this. And actually, of course, you aren't having too many people anyway. My brother said that the newly elected president to be said we all need to stay home and eat spam. Well I'm not doing that because he said it by any means but that's exactly what I'm going to do. My dh wants pot roast with potatoes and carrots but I'm not much of a meat eater so I'm going to fry myself some spam and have a sandwich or maybe even two since it's a holiday.
I got lost in my shawl pattern...twice...and it took me forever to figure out what row I was on. I finally realized that I don't need a pattern so now it's nearly done. I'm up to 62 inches and I need 67 so 5 more short rows then since I like things to have edging I'll do a row or two of edging and make pockets which I'll crochet on and that will be done.
Ginny, with your new quilt book I can see many quilts in your future.

Ruth, I told my hb about the spam, and that's what he wants to eat on Thursday. Tomorrow I'm going to fix a quinoa, chicken and crisp veggie combo for me, something that will be good for several days! Better on the second day! I will fix a pumpkin custard.
Sunshine today. Feels warmer.
Have you tried making rolled paper beads? Looks interesting. Another thing to explore when I finish the paperwork.

Hello Crafters Ginny - I'm glad you were able to get things done in the house and finish the quilting on the panel quilt. The colors in my layer cake fabrics are dark reds, medium blues and tans - it's a pretty line of fabric. Ruth - Hope you are able to get the shawl done soon. Sue - I'm glad you are having some sunny days. Could someone explain the "spam" thing? Why did he say people should eat spam? I don't keep up with what's going on sometimes My mother used to love Spam and she's fry it up for sandwiches. I liked the turkey Spam they came out with many years ago, I don't know if they still sell that. It was sunny here today but cool. I went out this morning just to mail some bills, so now I don't have to go out the rest of the week. If things were "normal" I'd go to JoAnn's tomorrow since their Thanksgiving sale starts, but I don't want to deal with the traffic or people in the store. I finally put together my new vacuum and tried it downstairs. It picked the dirt up really well and is very powerful, it kind of pulled me along instead of the pushing I'm used to. I'm sure I'll get used to it. Now I need to take it upstairs and use it there. No crafting for me today, I just really haven't been in the mood to do any of that. Take care everyone!

I forgot to explain about the virtual cookie exchange. Normally each blogger posts a cookie recipe on the day they post, usually with pictures. I'll try to remember to post a link when the blog hop starts.

Oh my gosh!! Sue, I have not made rolled paper beads in years- used to make them when I was a kid and made them with my kids when they were little. They are a ton of fun and so colorful- if you use heavy paper (and bright colored) magazine pages. Unless you use the same colored paper for each, no two beads will be alike and they are so pretty. When done a quick coat of mod Podger or something like that and they get a nice glossy finish. Lots of fun- very pretty and a great way to recycle. You can vary the bead size by how large you cut the paper.... Bless you for making spam for your husband. I would much prefer the quinoa /chicken combo. I really dislike spam. Pumpkin custard sounds good however
Ruth, enjoy that spam sandwich for me....eat two....three.... I tried eating it plain, and also tried it in fried rice and a few other recipes. The problem is it still smells like and tastes like spam. I would not mind some of Dh’s pot roast however. Multiple sheriffs in my state have said that they will not enforce the governors mandate for the number of people in a home. My arrogant governor likes to see himself on television- so he will make a big fuss over it even though there are multiple pictures of him in public without a mask. I will do the best I can to keep my family safe.....and I know they are also trying to stay safe. Actually tomorrow I go to the doctor for the second shingles shot- and will ask him what he thinks about the covid vaccine when it’s available. That is if my governor allows it to be distributed in this state.
Hope to get a few minutes in cleaning up the panel quilts to get them ready for binding. See y’all later G

CJ- that layer cake sounds really pretty...my kind of colors! Cannot wait to see how the quilt turns out. Glad you got to play with your new toy, the new vacuum. A new vacuum usually amazes me at how much they pick up- and how dirty my house was. Yikes. And enjoy the spam. I am eating turkey on Thursday. G

CJ who knows why Biden says anything he says. He does ok when he's reading what someone wrote for him but when he had to ad lib he loses his focus...and memory.
Years ago I bought a vacuum at Target. I still have it. I was amazed at all the stuff it sucked up. I still have it but don't use it much because it's so heavy. Woman on the other thread I post on just bought a Shark too, CJ, but she bought her's at Kohl's so I bet she paid a lot more than you did.
CJ, your fabric does sound really nice. I'm looking forward to seeing the completed top
Sue we eat a bit of quinoa too. We put it in all of our soups. I was thinking of making a pumpkin pie but dh wants carrot cake so I'll make that instead or maybe I'll make that and some pumpkin custard.
Ginny and Sue, I've never even heard of rolled paper beads. I'll have to look that up.
Did a couple errands today and did a little straightening up so haven't got to crocheting yet

Ruth, gosh I made rolled paper beads and Girl Scouts many many years ago! Take a magazine cover and cut it into long triangles that run the entire length of the magazine cover so at the top and the triangle is maybe an inch and a half wide and it tapers down to a point at the end. You’ll need either tacky glue or Elmers glue. Starting at the fat end, roll the triangle up wrapping it around a pencil, the pencil will provide a hole in the bed for you to thread a wire or whatever you’re going to put your beats on through. Of course when you finish you’ll have to put a little extra glue after rolling it on the pointed end to hold in place, and then something like mod podge when the bead is all done and dried to make it glossy. They’re so pretty. They come out better to use a magazine cover and a heavy paper magazine cover because the colors are more brilliant and there’s usually more color on the cover than you are on the inside pages. For some silly reason I’m having trouble sleeping tonight so that’s why am up. I’m gonna read for a little bit and hope that I can fall back to sleep

modpodgerocksblog.com/paper-beads/This is a link on how to make the beads... which oddly enough is on mod podge’s web site. Do not think we used Mod podge back in the stone ages when I was a little girl in Girl Scouts. They do come out so pretty... and unique if you use magazine covers and the varying colors in each page. I noticed from the directions they ask for cocktail tooth picks to roll the beads around. I know we used pencils, easier for young hands and new crafters to deal with. CJ, thanks for the explanation about the cookie exchange, Still it sounds like a lot of fun and a nice way to try to do something normal. Plus its probably less calories as you do not have to sample all those cookies!!! Slept in until 7- so I kind of made up for the bad start to my night of sleep. Got Dd #2 coming over to help bake. Have a good day all Ginny

good morning girls, I AM OK. no sewing for about a week. So still have the cuffs to put on the stockings. yesterday did see my orthopedic doctor.he said my right hip is getting really really bad.no groin pain so no surgery for awhile. he thinks I have bursitis in my right hipbone. got a shot. got back in 3 months if I need to.he wants to try this first before any surgery.
a few summers ago NITA and Dick went with us to the spam museum in Austin MN. they were impressed.I was not.thought it would be bigger. oh my gosh I did not know there were so many different kinds of spam.prices were higher then in the store.people were buying like crazy. Nita bought stuff.she is crazy about nutty socks., so bought some spam socks.
then we found a Culver's that sell spam burgers. I was not impressed. thought they could have more spam in it. could hardly taste mine,by the time everything else was on it could hardly find the spam we have not bought spam for many yes. last can was so salty we could not eat it..I know they make one that is not so salty.sometimes when they come out withe a product like that it is worse then the original one.
I did look up the weeding cake quilt.lot of novelty fabric and could make one some day.might have to buy some plain fabric to go with those. could make that quilt in different size kids quilts.
Ruth I agree about BIDEN.sad the generations under us could not see the real him. there are a lot of rumors going around . one is his wife has to help him get dressed. not sure if that is true. I think our country is even more in trouble with him. nuff said.
ok folks let's get what needs to be done for tomorrow. love ya phyl

Phyl- good to see you checking in...Did the shot help with your discomfort? I hope so! Somehow the thought of getting a shot in the hip sounds painful, but I really hope that it helps. Oh my, so there is a spam museum?? How funny! My Dad hated spam- he was in the Philippines during WWII- and the spam that was pretty much a daily staple “cooked in the can every day” from the excessive heat. Guess I got his bad attitude about it, and I would never eat a spam burger. Phyl are you and Don home tomorrow or are you visiting with family? I know each state has its own restrictions....with my kids over we will be within guidelines. And Dd#2 and her kids have been quarantined (they were exposed to a teacher who had it) but they are beyond 2 weeks... Anyway, hope that you and Don stay safe...and if you meet with anyone that its reasonable. And those cuffs will go on the stockings- perhaps this weekend??
Got the panel quilts trimmed and the bindings cut. Getting toward the end. I was going to attend the Thanksgiving service at church and then got cold feet....Just thinking I am better off really picking my battles and trying to stay home as much as I am able to. Its safer that way. I did go out today to the doctor and got my second shingles shot. Dd#2 came over this am and helped me bake....so the pies are done and so is the stuffing.
Have a good evening all Ginny
