Yup. Almost December. But first Thanksgiving. And we have a lot to be thankful for in the midst of this crazy year.
I binged a bit on the new season of THE CROWN. I remember most of the events in the series, but had forgotten a lot about Margaret Thatcher. Especially that she was against sanctioning South Africa.
Still watching NEW GIRL for comic relief and just saw that there will another season of EMILY IN PARIS. I will look for that.
I also plan on watching THE MOST BEAUTIFUL THING, the documentary Ann recommended about gang members from Chicago who came together to learn rowing.
What have you seen lately?

We finished ROADKILL last night. DH has gone from not wanting to watch it to jonesing for a second season. He googled Roadkill season 2 and got some car show. I loved the twist at the end. There is currently no season 2 scheduled of the PBS series. Still have some QUEEN'S GAMBIT left to watch. Still watching THE UNDOING. I recorded a rebroadcast of SOLO for some light relief. I always liked it and thought it was underrated. I have some episodes on DVR of SOULMATES on AMC - the one about a future where they take your brainwaves and get your perfect love match. I've only seen the first episode and a bit of the second. It seems like it will be repetitive. Some of my favorite actors particpated, so I will probably watch the rest. By the same guy who did BLACK MIRROR so you know nothing will work out well. There is some talk on the GDT about HILLBILLY ELEGY on NetFlix, mixed reviews. I never read the book. When all else fails, the original LAW AND ORDER and L&O CRIMINAL INTENT fill the bill. They are almost always on somewhere. Oh yeah, and STAR TREK NG still holds up. BBC has that one.

Happy Thanksgiving All!
This time of year we OD on Lifetime-style Christmas romantic comedies. A few nights ago we watched MIDNIGHT AT THE MAGNOLIA, which was pretty cute (although somewhat annoying at times). Longtime friends and local radio hosts Maggie and Jack fake it as a couple for their families and listeners in hopes of getting their show nationally syndicated.

Thank you so much, Ann. THE MOST BEAUTIFUL THING is an amazing documentary. How these men from the West Side of Chicago, facing all kinds of horrible experiences growing up, came together in rowing. Inspirational. A great thing to watch on Thanksgiving.

I really enjoyed this movie. I like almost everything that Penelope Cruz is in.
Broken Embraces
R 2009 ‧ Drama/Thriller ‧ 2h 10m
The death of Ernesto Martel (José Luis Gómez) sets off a chain of events that forces one man to come to terms with his past. Before he went blind, Harry Caine was Mateo Blanco (Lluís Homar), a film director who often worked with Ernesto. Ten years ago, Ernesto and Mateo's friendship became a battle for Lena (Penélope Cruz), Ernesto's mistress and Mateo's secret object of affection. When the former recruits his son (Rubén Ochandiano) to spy on the latter, things quickly spiral out of control.

I am a big Penelope Cruz fan as well, Connie. Thanks for the recommendation.
An adaptation of BETWEEN THE WORLD AND ME by Ta-Nehisi Coates is streaming free on HBO this weekend. I shall try to see it tonight.
I also started watching the second season of VIRGIN RIVER on Netflix. It has such gorgeous scenery that I had to look up where it was filmed. Vancouver. I have never been there, but would really like to go.

Oh, Connie, I like the sound of Broken Embraces. On the list it goes.
Iani: I didn't read Hillbilly Elegy either. My book group read it and I knew I would miss the meeting. Meryl Streep and Amy Adams, gotta be a great film!!!!
We finished Queens Gambit and loved it all. We watched the first episode of The Crown and loved that, too. Now that we have a few evenings to ourselves we can watch more entertainment that we enjoy.
Last night we streamed a Portland Stage play, Tally's Folly. I love the ability to access some of the things we would normally attend in person. We struggle a bit with the technology, but we're getting there!
Did anyone watch last Sunday night's 60 minutes? Every segment was of great interest to us. The first segment was on Covid "Long haulers", people who have lingering, life changing issues after Covid. The second segment was about kids who just don't attend school virtually. They followed a social worker who knocked on doors looking for kids and ways to get them to attend school. One girl, a senior in high school, lived in one room with multiple family members and only had a cell phone for technology. She tried going to the park to attend school. Heart wrenching stories. The last segment is upbeat. It is about a study of people who live well into their nineties and beyond, the 90 Plus study. 60 Minutes has been following the study. It is fascinating.

woolworker, I wanted to watch THE CROWN but DH lost interest after the second episode. Now that we're both home all the time our viewing has to be mutually agreed upon.

Finished THE CROWN and the new season of VIRGIN RIVER. I don't remember the scenery in Vancouver as much from the first. Heavenly. I binged on it to see the vistas as much as to see what happened. The season ends with an event that ensures another season.

I feel your pain, Iani! I sometimes knit in the afternoon before dinner and watch something my DH doesn't like. He tends to have a wakeful period in the middle of the night and watches his favorites then...they usually put him back to sleep!
I have been watching the CNN episodes of the Windsors before watching the same period of time in The Crown. It's interesting to see the similarities, some scenes are almost identical. I do think The Crown is well done and certainly spells out the challenges and changes during Queen Elizabeth II's reign. I think she is amazing, certainly not perfect, but quite a stalwart. I also think she tries hard to walk the line between fairness and tradition.

I agree about Queen Elizabeth, Ann. THE CROWN does not cast a positive light on the Royals in general, and is particularly harsh regarding Camilla and Prince Charles, but one cannot help but admire the Queen. In addition, the series is very critical of Margaret Thatcher. Deservedly so, in my opinion. I think the season is very well-done.
IMHO, HILLBILLY ELEGY on Netflix is not quite as good a film. The book has a lot of information about the poorer class residents of Appalachia that is not in the film. It focuses on Vance's family instead. It would be hard to include all of the general stuff, and all films have to make that kind of choice. There is some excellent acting here, especially by Glenn Close. She is totally transformed and believable. I am glad I saw it, but don't know what others will think. Glenn Close's performance will stay with me for a long time.

Okay, I can't believe I am writing this but I have been watching the Lifetime after Thanksgiving movies. Honestly the acting is a bit better than the earlier ones and I have to admit I have shed a few tears and enjoying them. I have recorded some Hallmark ones as well. Maybe it is just being home alone for Thanksgiving has been the reason.
but I am feeling much better. Blowing my nose a lot but that keeps the pressure down in the sinus". Can even bend over today so I put the garland and the lights on the front porch railing. ( snow on it's way and colder temps so for the first time I am did it in warmer temps. 50's I am planning on doing some Christmas things differently this year.)
I was having trouble reading but can't wait to get back to this darn huge book. I am intrigued and enjoying it a lot but have to admit I have raced over some of the astrology sign etc , know there is a hint in there somewhere but have not found it. and find it a bit boring to go into such depth . A 40 year old crime can be complicated. But sure That Cormoran and Robin will figure it out by the end, guess I will have to wait until then. ) But those movies did the trick when my head was hurting and face was sore also. All good now. Fresh air even seemed great!!
I have a friend that says you should not put up the manger scene until Christmas eve but I am going to put mine out tomorrow. Just not sure where yet.
Are you working on your Christmas decorations? Know not everyone does but was just curious.

Connie, I love Lifetime Christmas movies. We don't get Lifetime anymore since we don't have cable but we are able to find a lot of those holiday romantic comedies on Netflix and Amazon Prime.
We saw a really cute romantic comedy on Amazon Prime tonight. A BRIDE FOR CHRISTMAS. Aiden (Andrew Walker) bets his friends that he can convince a woman to marry him by Christmas, and he sets his sights on Jessie (Arielle Kebbel), a young woman who has sworn off serious relationships.

I'm glad you are feeling better, Connie. I am purging the house of my paper piles and moving DD's clothes to her house to regain closet space....THEN I will work on Christmas decorations. I think this is an important year to get them up and to enjoy them. We'll see how I do with the cleaning and purging!
Gail: I agree with you about Margaret Thatcher. I would love to know how she and HRH got along! I mean how they REALLY got along. The Diana story is SO complicated. It has been beneficial to watch the CNN series, The Windsors, at the same time.
Dr. Fauci was on Meet the Press yesterday in case people who would like to see the interview missed it.
DH has a Zoom meeting all evening tonight so I need to think about what I want to watch that he won't like.
