I had a dental cleaning today, one I'd put off from earlier in the year. The office seemed to have pretty good safety features, but they did have me sit in the waiting room with 3 other people for about 5 minutes. I had hoped I would be taken straight to the exam room.
Being out in a place like this made me think that I am a bit more "concerned" about the virus than most people. I tried to limit my talking while I was there - less chance to spread any virus germs, but I could hear people talking in all the exam rooms which were full. And I saw lots of cars in restaurant parking lots, and people out shopping.
I don't have a problem with the decisions I've made for myself on how I'll behave during the virus crisis, but I still feel out of step with other people during this time.

One dentist office I go to does not allow you in the waiting room. You have to wait in your car until they are ready, then they will text you. The other dentist office I go to (I alternate cleanings between a periodontist's office and a general dentist's office) only allows one person in the waiting room. If there is someone in there you have to wait outside.
I commend you for being cautious.

luanne - I think the dentist you go to that doesn't allow you in the waiting room has the right idea.
My dentist did make me call when I was in their parking lot and then they called me back when it was time for me to come in. I thought I'd walk in and go straight back to the room, so I was a bit shocked they told me to take a seat in the waiting room with the other people. I would rather have waited in my car during that time.

I recently had a (long delayed) dental cleaning and some follow-up work a few days later. I was the only person there. I got the impression the appointments were staggered. I wore mask and gloves, they were happy I was wearing gloves. My temperature was taken, and I answered the usual Covid exposure questions you get everywhere. The personnel were double masked, face shields, gloves, of course, no aerosol producing equipment used. They had a number of air purifiers. I felt very safe.
I also had an eye exam recently. They had me call them on arrival and wait in the car until someone came out to get me. It also felt like a safe environment.
DH has had mixed experiences with chiropractic. His usual guy, who is a personal friend as well who we have known since the 80s, won't wear a mask! DH started going to a local chiro who is better but you have to go through some hippie-dippie store to get to his office. If he goes early it's OK, but as the day goes on, maskless people start patronizing the front store. There are left-leaning anti-maskers too, apparently.

Stories like this are why I am not letting go of my precautions just yet. "Mike and Carol Bruno did everything right to avoid Covid-19. They refrained from hosting the big, traditional family gatherings they were used to. They stuck to phone calls and video conferences with family even though they didn't live far away. But a simple family visit to get a haircut claimed both of their lives." "All it took was a simple choice after months of caution, a choice they thought was safe. 'Had I made that sacrifice and, you know, didn't spend, you know, 30-40 minutes with my mom -- they would still be here'" www.cnn.com/2020/12/29/us/covid-coronavirus-victim-story-haircut-chicago-trnd/index.html?

Haircuts I can do without. The medical stuff needs to be done.

I couldn't get the link to open but that horrifies me. So far the only person in our salon who has had covud is me.
We are at 10 months it's unrealistic to think my clients can or would go that long without coming in at least a couple times. I don't know what else I can do to keep them protected, we are there totally alone. Me and 1 client at a time and everything is sanitized between appointments.

Jennifer, I've been trimming my own hair lol. I use clippers on Rons and have for years. JD, on the other hand, looks like an 80s hair band member lol. But he's always liked his hair a little long.

Haircuts I can do without. The medical stuff needs to be done. I've had an annual exam and had to wait in the car until I was called in and then went directly to an exam room. Sparkling clean, minimal contact with staff, only pulled my mask down to say "aaaah." DH cancelled a few non-essential doctor visits (those "everything's fine, we'll see you in another six months" do-nothing checks) but has had several essential health appointments that he has kept. Same thing---sit in the car, wait for the phone call. My older dog had her annual and shots and a minor surgery (growths removed) all in the same visit. The vet tech came to the car and took her in. So far the only person in our salon who has had covud is me. Jennifer, was everyone tested? I hate to say it but there may have been asymptomatic people among your salon's staff. There is simply no way to know. Temperature checks are BS, as we all know. Sounds like you are doing the best you can in your place but who knows what is going on in the homes of your coworkers. I've been trimming my own hair lol. I use clippers on Rons and have for years. DH cuts my hair, I cut his and the dogs' hair too. None of us will win Best in Show, lol, but it will have to suffice for now. Bear in mind I was an every-six-week cut and color person, dabbing my roots with temporary touch-up color as needed in between salon visits. Well, now I am watching my salt-and-pepper come in along with my silver streaks. I kinda like it. To be honest, I was never a lover of the salon experience. I viewed it as a necessary evil and did it for over thirty years. Eventually I will go back for a decent haircut but the days of hours in the chair every six weeks are over.

I feel for the hair and nail salon people, many who have invested a lot of money to conform to safety regulations, only to have their places of business shut down again. But I didn't feel comfortable going even when they were briefly open. I have been trimming my hair a bit just in case of split ends. The color is two tone for sure.

Not that I know of, I'm not even sure how that would work, get tested weekly? If you test too early it's a false negative and you could be positive the next day. I do know my coworkers, and I trust them. We have been together for many, many years. I would not risk their health and they would not risk mine. I know there are asymptomatic cases but a houseful of them? My boss's daughter was not feeling well a couple of months ago, she got tested and was negative, my boss stayed home until she got her test results. For the foreseeable future, I will continue working by myself when the salon is closed, it is literally me and 1 client.

Jennifer, You are doing a good job. I haven't gotten a haircut since early March. I wear my hair pulled back at my neck so it will just keep getting longer until I decide to go in. The problem is I have a lot of thick hair and as it gets down my back it is a bear to wash. I've considered my husband trimming it but am hesitant, although just a trim probably wouldn't be too bad.
