7. More confidence and independence A study by the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society examined exercise in the elderly and found that training led to improvements in functional reach and balance and reduced participants' fear of falling.
Comments? Confidence and independence - I like that exercise helps with that. I guess I never thought about it in quite that way. I know that keeping fit will help me to live the life I have out here in the country longer but I never really thought about the confidence part of it. How about you?

Disease prevention and also getting over disease more easily PLUS being able to function independently are all reasons to exercise. I know that being steadier on your feet and such is important. I also would like to be the little old lady that can lift her carry-on up into the overhead compartment on planes...forever

Yes - definitely two more good reasons to continue to make exercise and activity a priority.
I tend to think more about the food component for health conditions. Time to change the outlook to get the exercise part in as well.
Confidence & independence - at this point, I am not seeing changes that would keep me from living the life I want, moving, doing normal activities. But, I also realize that making sure I keep or improve this level will have impacts on the future. I counted on the lifting, moving, just being on my feet all day and such at work before I retired. I don't have that now. (on the other hand, I am glad that most all of the discomfort from repetitive motion has gone away!)

Disease prevention is important to me too and although I concentrate more on healthy eating for that, I also have begun to realize that exercise is also important. It's also important for just about everything except perhaps weight loss although I'm sure it helps with maintaining. Just keeping active helps with that, I think. Anyway, I'm determined to continue with exercise and keeping active so I can be the best I can be as I get continue to get older.

Preventing disease is a top priority, especially now. Exercise is definitely a big part of that. Feeling more steady on your feet, gives you more confidence. Stretching & balance exercises are very important for older people.

I agree with all the above statements. Being confident and independent is especially important to me since I live alone. Glad that exercise is helping to keep me that way.
