surfgirl, Aha. Interesting. (The Shingrix possibly being viscous, also reminding me how to spell it )

One of my local papers had an article this morning that my provider, Sutter Health, has been cancelling appointments due to supply shortage. People were saying they did not receive any notification, just happened to check their appointment online, and it is no longer there. The article went on to say appointments up through March 9th were being rescheduled and they were going to start notifying people.
DH's and my appointment is on March 9th. Freaking out. Went online to check and - whew - our appointments are still listed. The paper I was getting my information from is published in the next county over, Santa Clara, which has a much larger population than my country, Santa Cruz. So I imagine that is why this is happening.
It made for a few anxious moments, I can tell you.

I got my first shot today. Waiting for an email with a link I use to get my second appointment. Worried about finding a second appointment.

Jennifer , Got on this morning and got an appointment. They had set aside appointments for second shots. In most areas those needing the second shot have priority. Glad you got your appointment.

I haven't heard of anyone having an issue getting the second shot, hope all goes well for you. 🙂 Ahem. Raises hand. I was premature in thinking our second shots were not in jeopardy. Our provider, Sutter Health, has cancelled 40,000 second shots. If they don't get more supply "soon" they will cancel 50,000 more second shots. They were assured by the state/county, whichever, that more supply was definitely coming, so to not hold back any reserve for second shots and give out everything for first shots. Then I guess the winter storms and who knows what all delayed the supply. The current statement from them says all second shots scheduled up to March 9 (the date of our shots) will be rescheduled. Doesn't say when. When I go on the website the appointment is still there but I don't trust the info. We have two more weeks after the 9th to be within the second dose window. Mr. Lani is trying to see if anything is available from any other source. Yeah, him and 89,999 other people. Everything is booked solid.

I put this in the One Thing thread, but Santa Cruz county stepped in and gave 3800 vaccine doses to Sutter Health, my provider that did not have enough supply for second shots. As I mentioned, the county told Sutter to give out all doses to first shots and there would be more supply in time for the second. But there wasn't, but now there is. Hoo boy. So still on track for March 9 for second Moderna shot.

Saw on the news last night that they are starting to give the Johnson & Johnson vaccine at some locations in New Mexico. I hope this speeds up distribution so that our daughter can get her vaccine soon. They are giving the vaccine at the lab where she works (she is still working remotely) but they are following CDC guidelines so she can't get it there yet. It will be interesting to see if she's contacted by the lab for the vaccine or by the state first.

DH and I got our second Moderna vax yesterday afternoon. It was a bit of an adventure. First, we both got robocalls that our appointments were on the 10th, not the 9th. But, online still showed the appointments being on the 9th and we had the card showing the appointments so we ignored the robocalls.
Then when we got there, the woman on Mr. Lani's side of the car told him her computer showed he had already gotten his second shot! She told him to drive forward and park off to the side while they worked it out. Meanwhile, on my side, the tech already had the needle in my arm. Mr. Lani was totally ready to drive on, but I was able to get his attention before he went for it. Thrills. After 5-8 minutes they came to where we were and gave Mr. Lani his shot.
This morning I feel on par with my second Shingrix shot. Not great, but functional. DH is the same.

I got JD scheduled for the 27th -not sure what vaccine is available, but any is better than none I guess. I haven't scheduled Ron yet because they don't have their April times up yet and I want to give JD several days to see how he feels before Ron gets his.

As the morning is wearing on (and the coffee is wearing off), I am feeling more spacy. Not going to do my weekly scheduled grocery shopping until tomorrow.

Hi guys, just to check in since you guys are amazeballs (to use my friend Reggie's word) and were so sweetly concerned with my well-being given that LA is a hotspot of germy 'rona, I managed to become a successful vaccine "leftover" hunter. I got my first shot of Moderna today and will go back in 4 weeks for the second shot. My girls went back to school so I was getting a bit concerned with their exposure and bringing it home to me and their dad. They wear masks while in school but I couldn't help but still feel a little nervous given we've been on extreme lockdown from 3/12/20 through the day before they went back to school on 3/1/21.
The place I went to has an amazing doctor who oversees the vaccine distribution at this particular clinic. The clinic is in an area of LA that was particularly and disproportionately hard hit with the virus (it's a working class community of color, mostly Latinx), so he's made it so that anyone who lives in the zip code regardless of CA's eligible tier criteria can get a vaccine and so he has partnered with the CDC to obtain as many leftover and soon to be expired doses from neighboring administering sites as possible. Once this clinic is all done with local community vaccines and all eligible tiers, they pull from a standby line of those of us not eligible at all (not residents of the zip code and don't meet any of the current CA eligibility tiers).
I got there at 4:45am to line up (in the pouring rain, with a folding beach chair, an umbrella, rainboots, leather gloves, baseball cap and two jackets so I could use one as a blanket), and was already about 60th in line at that point. By 6:30am the line was around the block.
At 8am they pulled anyone 55 years and older to front of the line, then 16-17 year olds and their parents (since they can have Pfizer and they didn't want to run out of that one before finding anyone who was limited only to that particular vaccine), then parents with young children/babies, especially so they could get breastfeeding mothers vaccinated. They kept up this pattern all through the day and at some points opened up the priority to ages 50 and up.
At 1:30pm I'd finally made my way up near front of the line, inside the gates of the clinic. The staff assured all of us, once you're in the gates, you're in, you're getting one. They ended up being able to use up more than 200 leftover doses today and I was a lucky recipient. My ex husband will try to go either this week or next week, though I may go with him to at least just drop him off and come back for him later as the parking was a beast and I was trying to be mindful of not taking up parking spaces in the local neighborhood since I'm just a scavenging guest and want to respect their space. Was way easier when people got dropped off instead and I don't think he'd be comfortable to take an uber until after he's been vaccinated.
What a relief it is though to be on my way to being fully vaccinated! Hope you guys are doing well!

finreporter, so glad you came back and posted. We've missed you. I was saying to dh (and others) that it seems like the people I know who have gotten shots are the ones being proactive. They aren't just registering with the state, or whoever, they are actively looking for places they can get the shot. It's too bad it has to be like this.
