This is a thread devoted to those in their 50s & 60s and beyond who don't have children or grandchildren but live rich, full lives. Please feel free to join our stroll thru life and come back often for support and to share. ****************************** Becky, I hope your power and water come back soon. 6-7 hours without power is not a rolling blackout. I hope you get some real food soon. Keeping you and yours in my prayers. Be safe.

Thanks Chele and thanks for the start. We are back to rolling blackouts but can get warm enough when power is on. I have never worn a jacket in the house before but I have not taken it off since this started.
Freezing rain overnight and still going on making roads impassable. Chances of getting out for groceries this afternoon are slim. The hardest part has been timing meals when the power is on. It stayed on long enough to scramble eggs for breakfast. Snow/ice may happen tomorrow.
It could be worse. Some people in Austin have been without power for 3 days. Power just went out again.
Have a great day friends.

Wow, the hits keep on coming, Becky. Hope you are stocked up on cat and dog food. I would keep the jacket on as well.

moonriver , Denise, we got 6 inches of snow and are expecting a little more tomorrow. We also got down to 0° last night. Glad you were not out in it last night. My DB lives in Portland OR and they had 9.5 inches of snow. They are not used to that. They also lost power for a day and a half, because on top of the snow they got ice. If any of you like Corgis, here is the cutest video of a Corgi in snow: t.co/Fosp2ImKSxIf you follow the link, just click the Cancel button if you don’t have the Twitter app and it will show in your web browser.

Chele, thanks for the start. The corgi video was really cute. Wow on the 0°. Are there any power issues there or is this just something they know how to handle? The coldest temp ever recorded here is 19°, but Tallahassee has gotten down to -2°. It's gray outside and 67° right now. We're supposed to hit a high of 87 tomorrow and then only get to 66 on Saturday. Crazy weather everywhere, but I'll take mine over the bitter cold. Becky, I'd be wearing a jacket inside too. Hope the power comes back and stays long enough to get warm and cook. Being out for over 6 hours is definitely not a rolling blackout.
Hope everyone has a good day. Stay warm!

Thanks for the start, Chele. Cute Corgi! It's a good thing they didn't have any more snow or that pup would have had some problems. WOW! on 0° How is Iggy doing today after using the snowblower yesterday? Good thing you had the super sized one, especially if you are expecting more snow. You'll appreciate this. I decided to have Hakurei turnips with hummus for lunch. I had a difficult time getting them out of the container soil and then had to let them thaw a bit before I could eat them.
Becky, how are you doing? Do I understand you're getting another storm today? I heard something this morning about your governor going on Hannity last night to blame solar and wind turbines for the power grid issues when most of the outages were with fossil fuels and an ailing infrastructure. El Paso and some areas in the north and east of the state seem to be in much better shape because they didn't fall into the frenzy against regulation and were only out for a few hours. I also heard about what Linda said last night about going cheap on infrastructure, hedging bets against something happening like what you're going through now. It's amazing that wind is a reliable power source in Canada and Greenland, but not Texas. We were totally without power for up to 4 days several times when we lived in NC and a lot of the food we had we had on hand couldn't be prepared on the grill or fireplace. So I understand the limitations.I'm sorry HEB was closed when you got there. Goood luck with your limited availability. How were your roads yesterday? Did you venture out at all today? I know how uncomfortable this is and I'm praying for you. I hope the will make some significant improvements so this will never happen again. It's going to be a pretty expensive fix though. Based on the hurricane season we just went through, I wouldn't bet on something like this not happening again in the next few years. I just heard that Rick Perry said that Texans are fine with the rolling blackouts as long as they can remain free from federal energy regulation. Do you agree?
Interesting article on food preservation, Linda. Also, pretty disappointing that Texas was so afraid of federal regulation that they have now put just about their entire state at risk. And, it's been this way for a long time apparently.
Kathy, that fresh lobster looked amazing. I'm glad Captain Kirk throws back the little ones so they can grow a bit before harvest. That's pretty bizarre about -2° in Tallahasee. DSIL said they were 25°, so they must have been on the edge. Your roller coaster temperatures are pretty strange. Sorry for the dark day you are having today. We do have sunshine but it's already clouding up.Wi-fi is working for now, so I'm spending the afternoon with Torchwood. I'm in Series 3 now, so Owen and Tosh are dead. This is the season with Peter Capaldi. I think I like him better in this role than as Doctor Wo.
How did the neuro go today, Liz? I heard your governor is in a bit of hot water over miscalculated nursing home deaths. I think the overall death toll is just the tip of the iceberg, and not just in the nursing homes.
Denise, it was good to have last night off so you didn't have to go out in that weather. Do you work tonight? Will you be working the weekend?
Tire is fixed (again). Same problem as last time, so if I can get 3 months out of this repair, it will be time for new tires anyway. He checked the wheel as well and said it looked good. So that will save several hundred dollars. I'm still planning to go to Osteo tomorrow, but that will be contingent on the weather in the morning. They are only predicting rain at this point, but we'll see how the temperatures are. With the tire repaired and a full tank of gas, I'll make it if the weather is acceptable. I heard from my covid GF. She is still having to have follow up and has some persistent swelling in a foot and leg that they are trying to identify. At least she is recovering at home.

Karen, the -2 in Tallahassee and 19 in Orlando are the all time record lows, not today's weather! Glad the tire is fixed. Hope they can find out what's wrong with your GF, but that's good that she is at home. There seem to be lots of strange side effects with Covid. Safe travels tomorrow if you go.

Kathy, February is usually our roller coaster month for temps like you are having - only at a cooler level. I cannot imagine -2° or even 19° in Florida but with the ice caps melting it may be coming.
Liz, I hope the neuro has a solution for your migraines. I am glad the meds are helping Zoe. Be careful in the snow tomorrow. We are expecting 1-3 inches within the next 24 hours. Our real estate market is a buyer’s market right now. I don’t know where all the people are coming from or if they are just abandoning other parts of town. Our downtown is undergoing a renaissance with lots of new bldgs with condos going up near the ballpark. Meanwhile the banks are closing their downtown offices. It is a conundrum.
Karen, I hope the docs figure out what is causing the swelling in GF. I hope her breathing is improving. Yeah, Corgis have those cute little legs that are not made for deep snow. Corgis have great personality but boy, are they shedders. I still prefer stubborn little Maltese. What? You didn’t want frozen turnips! The walking onions still had some green before the big snow. Right now they are buried. Fingers crossed the tire holds out.
Iggy’s back is pretty good today. He even shoveled a little at the bottom of the driveway. Mine is okay after I wake up and do my workout, but if I stand at the kitchen counter for too long or do bend and reach chores it starts hurting again. It also hurts if I sit too long. I think it is going to take awhile to heal. As usual Iggy is a quick healer.

Chele, the coldest weather I've experienced in Florida was in Tallahassee in the 70s. It was 6° on campus one morning and we had light snow. I remember it getting into the low 20s a couple of times in Central Florida in the 70s and 80s, but we've had mostly mild winters in recent history.

Chele The furkids have more food than we do although neighbors have been really kind and sharing. Thanks moonriver. We are definitely not used to it. Kathy I can tolerate rolling outages much more than hours without power. Karen We had freezing rain overnight into this morning making roads totally impassible. Kenneth didn't even open the road gate because it's too slick. May be getting snow/ice tomorrow. Since HEB and Walmart are both closed it doesn't make any sense to get out. Thankfully we have great people on our road helping out. I may have to become a vegetarian since we have no meat after tonight. Although if we can get out tomorrow another neighbor has offered some frozen meat. Actually one neighbor sent some can soup and frozen breaded chicken. I am not even trying to be on a diet until we can buy food again. I think since we have less food I am hungrier. LOL. The frozen turbines were just part of the problem. The main problem now is with ERCOT wanting people to get by on less electricity. Hard to do when you have no power which some people have been without for days. Thanks for the prayers. Power seems to be staying on a little longer at a time now. Poor Scooter doesn't understand why she isn't getting her normal human treats and doesn't eat much dry food. I think she is staging a hunger strike. I told her she would eat her food if she got hungry enough. I am almost completely out of fruit and I am out of yogurt. I didn't know how bad I missed it before. I don't know if I totally agree with Perry but I'm okay with rolling outages in the winter as long as they don't happen in the hot summer.
