Whether you are regular poster or a lurker, we encourage you to talk with us. We do talk about books, but also about our lives, and Weight Watchers. We are women who are spread around the country, and eventually you will learn you we are, and what books we like to read. Don't be intimidated, just pop in and tell us who you are, and what you are reading now.
This is a thread we had on the WW 50 Year old board, so even though most of us have moved beyond our 50's, I am keeping it here. Some prefer to post on Facebook, but for those who may also like to post on something that resembles our old format, I decided to start this. Although we were brought together by our love of books, and we love to share our ideas about books and authors, our friendship has grown, and we know a lot about each others lives. We are spread across the country, and that adds a bit of interest as well, learning about other people's way of life through the "book" they write on the thread.

Good morning. -8 right now, going up to an expected high of 21 later today.
Carol, hope you all are well, and have your power on. I have a feeling since we did not see you yesterday, that you did loose power; good luck, I am praying for you.
Marsha, what I said was an upscale RESALE shop, not retail, lol!!! The Unity Resale Shoppe is on Apache Ave, in Ashwaubenon, across from Bellin clinic. As I say upscale, it is a lot classier than say, Goodwill. Their furniture or whatever, is showroom quality. All the money they make there goes to Unity Hospice. About your anniversary, have you tried take out at Ziggy's? We have not been there in a long time, so I am just assuming they are still excellent. Or Village Grill. You are lucky, your area has a lot of eating places to use. I have been doing smoothies every morning, eliminating the lite english muffins and peanut butter totally. I hope it shows up to the good, on the scale on Friday.
Pinky, I finally threw my hands up and sent the taxes in by paper form to the IRS, after they kept rejecting my federal return. So I can relate, just getting all the paperwork together for DH and I was quite a bit, what with what I had from the interest I earned on the money from DB, so I would not want to get your taxes ready to be done..oh boy! But you are probably used to it, right? I wish too, that you lived close to me, as that would be so much fun shopping!!! I have all these ideas in my mind for what I want, and so far, like surfing the web looking; that I have not found it. I am hoping that I do find things, eventually.
Robin, yes, this place I frequent is such a nice resale shoppe, so I am confident I will find some things to buy. Oh my, how nice to wake up to 45!!! I can't even imagine that. I so hope all those people down south are able to get some moderating temps very soon. I bought a car all on my own years ago, I think it was back around 88 or 89, I went one day when DH was fishing, and bought a Ford Escort. I do not remember being treated differently at all. How fun, taking Maddie out to eat!!! By the time we get to see another picture of her, she will be going to school! Lol!!
Gareth, hope your temps have moderated somewhat today. Sorry for your DH; I know when my DH would have those, they are painful. I bet he feels all better today, right? You DH seems like a tough man.
Got a phone call, see you all later.

Just a pop on. Yesterday it got up to 50 degrees, now it was just 23 to walk the dog, of course warm for most of you. It was not bad, and because of the warm weather yesterday the dog was actually able to see some grass. Tomorrow it is supposed to snow again, so that might make me cancel my ultrasound appointment. If you forgot, it's to see if there is anything wrong with my gall bladder.
Karen, I know here there are also some resale shops that are picky about what they take, and end up with higher end things in very good condition.
Got to go, it's getting late.

We are having a heat wave----it is O degrees and going to get to 8 whole degrees today----yahoo!!!! No sun though now so probably feels about the same as before. We are getting a few snowflakes----not supposed to amount to anything. Sounds like a mess near Dallas/Ft.Worth-----with no heat/electricity people are having pipes freeze in their house's and burst doing a lot of damage. Stores are closed because of no electricity--even. What a mess. Reminds me of the series I am reading by Terri Blackstock----the book effects people everywhere and they are without electricity, water, cars are shutting down because of all digital. They are having to find ways of doing things---kinda scary. Stores are shut down in the book too.
Karen---Yes I am used to are taxes but glad we have our tax preparer look it all over. I don't like working with depreciation----a lot of it because of all our machinery and cows fit into that also as they produce calves. The calves themselves do not nor do feeder calves. DH likes to invest to and that is beyond me. The tax preparer finalizes things after we discuss them. I just do the bookwork leading up to it. Have fun decorating----did you get everything moved around?
Robin---Your 50 degrees sound wonderful----I heard in the upper east there could be snowstorms again. UGGHHHH!!
Carol-----yes I hope all is okay for you. Stay safe!!
Hi Marsha, Gareth and Anngie!!!Hope all is well with you ladies.

Karen - gotcha on the upscale resale shop. I've never been there. I live down the block from Ziggy's and it holds no appeal for me, and dh doesn't really like Village Grill. Thanks for the suggestions though. How do you make your smoothies? all the recipes I see are too high in points for me.
Robin - any chance of calling to see if there is a cancellation and you can get that ultrasound today?
Pinky - what is the name of that book you are reading?
We take our stuff to the accountant to prepare our taxes. We have been doing that since we bought the house. I prefer to have a professional think of things that might not occur to me.

Heat wave here too! It's 3Âş with no - in front of it! My car said -7Âş going to WM earlier. On the way I stopped and got my bloodwork done that's needed for my bone scan/Prolia shot Mon. This afternoon is my eye injection. I'm anxious to talk with the Dr after my experience renewing my driver's license yesterday. I was REALLY sweating it that it was even going to get renewed. I was failing miserably on the eye test. It was all so blurred and mostly unreadable. She had me redo it and asked a lot of questions. I was shocked when she finally said it was good. I'm thinking the Dr will suggest I see my optometrist for another eye exam and hopefully get a new prescription finally for new glasses. I struggle now reading anything even typing here.
The upscale resale stores here are so expensive you might as well buy new.
I'm glad DH's BFF is an accountant who's done our taxes for years. I just wish he'd let us pay him though. When he still lived here we took him and his DW out for a nice meal. Now we give them a restaurant gift certificate which he still never wants to take but we insist.
Hope carol is ok. I'd sure hate to be without power with theses temps. News was showing one place where pipes had burst upstairs flooding everything below. I heard that 72% of the US is covered in snow and ice.

Gareth, sorry for your DH having an UTI. Those are miserable.
I hate car shopping because of the haggling. DH doesn't mind so he does it, but I go along. I have heard of other women walking out of dealerships because they were ignored. I think it's great that some will do that. Even though I don't like it, it doesn't mean no woman should not buy a car on her own.
It has been an interesting few days. Sunday we were told we would have rolling blackouts with electricity going off for 15-30 minutes then coming back on. Our electricity went off the first time at 1:30 Monday morning. It went off and on until 8 a.m. then it went off until 10 p.m. By that time I had pulled every blanket and throw in the house plus had many layers on clothing on. I am cold natured so I have a lot of Cuddl-duds that I wore. I had so many layers on I could barely bend to sit down. So anyway Monday was miserable. Tuesday was better. It still went off but stayed on for longer times and less time between the off times. This morning it has pretty much stayed on. Whenever the power would come on, we would scurry to plug in our phones, etc.
Monday night we got a text from the city that we are under a boil order. Hard to do when you don't have power. Thankfully, DH was able to go to the grocery store and bought 3 cases of bottled water. Now we are able to boil water, we are doing that to clean dishes, etc. Apparently the city forgot to leave water trickling so the pipes wouldn't freeze.
We have plenty of food because I went to the store last Friday and stocked up. I really didn't even consider that we would lost power. We have had it happen in the past, but that was when we had bad ice storms when there was ice all over trees and they were crashing down on wires and things.
Monday night it got down to -4 which is a record. We got more snow last night and the roads are covered and pretty much undriveable. It's hard to tell where the road stops and yards start. My respect for all of you who deal with this kind of weather every winter has gone up tremendously.
DS and DDIL have had power, but no water. DD was good with both electricity and water, but just texted that the power went out. I don't know how they will manage with a 3 year old.
I love going to thrift stores. We had one that was upscale, but it closed a few months ago. Mostly I get books from the stores, but have found some clothes. I found 2 pairs of Not Your Daughter Jeans for $9.00 each which wounds like a lot until you go to a department store and see how much they usually cost, $90-100. I always wash things first thing and have never had trouble with bugs or anything.
I hope everyone is warm and safe.

We have a heatwave alright - it’s 39 degrees, sunny, windy and frigid out. And tomorrow they’re predicting more snow - 3-6”.
Today I had my post-op appointment and all is well. I can drive in two more weeks. He says the X-ray looks very good so I’m on the right tract. My next appointment is in three months. Glad it’s over to just be home and warm.
Carol, now I’m starting to worry. I sure hope your aren’t in the area where there is no power. The pictures on TV are heartbreaking for your area.
Robin, hopefully you’ll still have your ultrasound. Is it far from home? Sad about Nikki Minaj’s father. Was she a judge on American Idol or something similar? I agree about grocery store steaks. They’re just not the best.
Gareth, I hope you can get in to see an optometrist soon for new glasses. Or, maybe your ophthalmologist? How scary it must have been to try and read for your license. Glad to hear DH is feeling a little better. I know they’re hard to get rid of. Not sure why that’s the case. I’ve never had one myself.
Pinky, I can’t believe the temps you have! There really is t a food spot I. The whole nation! Even DS1 near Charlotte, NC has been getting heavy rain for days straight.
Marsha, we have our taxes down professionally as well. Not that’s it’s cheap, but they know things we don’t, and things change all the time. Oh, no, are you going to be ornery without your peanut butter?!
Karen, what colors are you going to have in your “new” bedroom? I assume you checked online WW, Target, Amazon, etc.?
Is anyone experiencing a rise in gas prices? Ours has gone up on average, 38 cents in the last few weeks.

Just missed you Carol. Glad you’re all OK despite the temps! I can’t believe it was -4 in Texas!

Carol, feel so badly for what you are all going through. When we lost power during Sandy, the first few days weren't bad because it was warm, but then once it got cold, we were miserable. I didn't even want to leave my dog home all day long in that so brought him to the office. I can't imagine dealing with a 3 year old, and if the whole city doesn't have water, checking into a hotel doesn't work. Glad your DH got the bottled water. At least we are prepared for cold weather here with our water.
Gareth, glad you got your licensed renewed, but if your vision is blurry, does it affect your driving?
Anngie, I think that Nikki Minaj was on American Idol at one point. I just heard on the news that the person who hit her father turned himself in. Of course the way I heard that was kind of strange. Someone called our office today that they wanted to interview DH about this new will of Larry King's that surfaced. He apparently wrote a hand written will in 2019, which cut out his wife that he was divorcing. They called this morning, so DH had time to research, and it turned out that the wife was a trustee of a large trust, so this was only a relatively small amount she was arguing over, and she is also president of Larry King Productions. I listened to the interview, and DH did well, and got to use his standard line, "When they tell you they are not arguing over the money, it's the principle, they are really arguing over the money." They called and said it was something from Peacock, but it was some news where there were 3 hosts that were 20 somethings.
Who knows who could have come in here by now, I just was taking care of work, imagine that.
Pinky, yes, it was feeling warm, but it did leave some ice around. With my detour, I go one very short 1/2 on the parkway to cut out a traffic light, and I had to let the car roll over some black ice, but I wouldn't be surprised if someone skidded on it.
Marsha, I think you were the one who asked, I am just going to reschedule for next week. If the snow doesn't turn out to be a big deal tomorrow, I will go. They called me from the vaccine trial and rescheduled my anti-body test for the afternoon. After that they will tell me if I got the real or the placebo, but it won't happen right away, they have to go through their various layers on the computer to figure it out.
Most people have been able to schedule vaccines here, so I am sure I can if I find out that I got the placebo. Reading-wise, I am almost done with Deacon King Kong, I might finish tonight, but not sure. I thought Monogamy would be a good night time, and it was, but then something happened where I don't think the rest of the book will be light, so I will read that until I come up for some others. I am going to let a book called Homeland Elegies go. It is supposed to be very good, but certainly not anything light. I read a brief synopsis, so something about Pakistan and Osama Bin Laden, 9/11, that kind of thing. Another immigrant story.
Last night's Hello Fresh meal was a good one, it was like a sweet and sour chicken over rice. Also something I would make on my own, so that's a good thing. I have to see if DH wants to finish his veal chop from Sunday tonight, and I will have some left over Chinese that is still there. They made a mistake and gave us 2 things we didn't order, but left out our wontons. The one thing they gave that I had is steamed shrimp and chicken with Chinese vegetables, so a good thing for me.

Thanks everyone for your concern. DD's electricity wasn't out for very long, thank goodness. Houston doesn't even get very cold in the winter so they were more unprepared than most. I think they just put a big "closed" on all the roads into the city.
I am so thankful we got our second vaccine last week. I don't know when they will be able to start giving them again.

Marsha---I am reading Night Light by Terri Blackstock. It is the 2nd book of 4 I think. The first one was Last Light which I read 1st.
Gareth---glad the Drivers License person passed you, it must have been borderline. Did you find anything out from the Dr. that did the injection----hoping so. I am sure you are worried about this. Hope new glasses is what you need.
Carol----wow, this must be difficult for you and everyone. Glad that you are safe-- is it supposed to warm up soon?
Anngie----Glad that your post op appointment went well and you are doing good. Do you have pain? Yes I have noticed the gas prices increasing----what we were afraid of when Biden got in.
Robin----sweet and sour chicken sounds so good right now.
