March in two weeks?? Days are getting longer, which I love. We have a snowstorm on its way and probably much more before this season is over, but I am seeing the light at the end of this winter tunnel.
This was from Judy Miller today, in case you did not see it: We just watched PENGUIN BLOOM on NETFLIX and really enjoyed it. We also watched FIREFLY LANE and the QUEENS GAMBIT and totally enjoyed all of them!
The only one I have not seen is FIREFLY LANE. I read the book years ago and was debating whether to watch it. Thanks for the recommendation. I will give it a try.
A friend of mine recommended ETHOS, a Turkish series on Netflix. It is quite thought-provoking. There are a number of characters with different religious, class and racial backgrounds who interact in interesting ways. In the first episode we meet an observant woman from a lower class in therapy with someone who is obviously not comfortable with her patient. Then we see that therapist in her own therapy session talking about her anger towards her patient because of her prejudices. I have always been interested in Turkey, a country where religious freedom and separation of church and state meant not being able to wear Muslim facial and head coverings in certain circumstances. The country has been cited for its treatment of minority groups. I will continue to watch this.
Seen anything new lately? Please share.

We have not had a lot of time for television right now, but we continue to LOVE All Creatures Great and Small. We took a break from our tasks last night to watch the CNN special on Italy which runs every Sunday night for a few weeks. It was just what we needed, a delight!!!

I continue to enjoy PBS. I sent back two movies as one didn't work and they will replace it right away. The other one was not what I thought I wanted. It was 3 discs and the first one was all in the dark and I just don't have the patience nor the time to mess with it.
I watched BIG SKY on regular TV and it was a fast moving and heart stopping series. It does continue but not sure when the next episode will be, have to check on that. Some of my shows are back and I have been watching 911, have not cared much for some of the new shows but have been checking them out. THIS IS US was a tear jerker this week and not because it was sad. WALKER has grown on me and though not much like Walker Texas Ranger but I think that is why I like it. not a fan of remakes. Check this one out if you haven't. ( Thursday nights on THE CW)

I cried with this week's THIS IS US too, Connie. Brought back many memories.
I have to look for the series on CNN, Ann. And ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL is wonderful.

I have been happy to catch some episodes of season 10 of Vera, that I haven't yet seen. On my second PBS station (the local one). It keeps saying they are repeats but I don't remember noticing these being shown before.

I turned on my tv to make sure I DVRd something I want to see later. SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE was playing and I watched it again. I cried...I always cry at these things. In two years it will be 30 years old. Everyone looks so much younger...NYC looks so much younger. It got me looking up Nora Ephron and her other works. Such a talented woman.

I love Nora Ephron, Gail. I have listened to her reading her essays on audio books and they are HYSTERICAL! You know that the film Heartburn was written by her and based on her marriage and divorce. Her daughter, Delia, is writing now.

I do know about HEARTBURN, Ann. And that the husband she fictionalized was Carl Bernstein of Woodward and Bernstein fame. She was one of the few people who kew who "Deep Throat" was. Delia is her sister, I think, and she co-wrote some films with her. YOU'VE GOT MAIL is one. She died all too young.

You are correct, Gail. Delia is her sister. Do listen to the essays, they will make you belly laugh. She was a witty lady. I just checked and she did not have a daughter, she had a son. Love You've Got Mail, the whole bookstore focus, that last dance with her mother as she closed the door to the store just gives me the chills!

Ann, I have Delia's readings on my list.
THE FORTY-YEAR-OLD VERSION on Netflix, which I mentioned before, is listed as one of the year's top ten films by the two majorju film reviewers for the NYT. I watched it for my film class.
Another director whose film we watched was Chloe Zhao. Her NOMADLAND is on Hulu and everyone I know who has seen it raves about it. So do film critics. It stars Frances McDormand, one of my favorite actresses. I might get Hulu just to see it. Please give us your opinion if any of you have watched it already.

Gail: Not Delia, Nora's essays. One collection is called I Feel Bad About My Neck.
We watched The Words last night with Jeremy Irons, Dennis Quaid and Bradley Cooper. My DD was here and watched it with us. DH and I had seen it before and we were more than happy to watch it again. Excellent film and great acting!

We finished watching FIREFLY LANE this week. It was good. I am anxiously awaiting to see what Netflix does with Season 2. I have Kristen Hannah's book on hold.
THIS IS US is my favorite TV show. This week's was a good one!
Connie, I am behind in the episodes of BIG SKY. Because it is so intense I have to be in the mood to watch them so am glad I have them taped.
We haven't watched much else lately.

DGD recommended PLAYING FOR KEEPS on Netflix. It was a shot of feel-good that I needed. Very light viewing. I had started watching I CARE A LOT, which is about a woman who preyed upon the elderly and had to turn it off. Too upsetting.

Gail in SC, I saw I CARE A LOT last night. Yes it was dark for sure. I stuck it out till Peter Dinklage showed up, and by then I was hooked enough to want to see if the Rosamund Pike character got her come-upance. Also Dianne Wiest was great. It will definitely make you paranoid about care homes, even though that part was (mostly) satirical.

Ahh, thanks, Lani. I will approach I CARE A LOT again.
Had my last film class meeting this morning. This was my favorite class ever. A fascinating group of women who were all invested, prepared well, and participated. I learned so much. I started taking this teacher's class when I lived in MA. This was my 4th or 5th with her. We all bonded. I cried after I turned off my zoom.
I have to look for another similar class as she will not run this class again until the summer.
