Whether you are regular poster or a lurker, we encourage you to talk with us. We do talk about books, but also about our lives, and Weight Watchers. We are women who are spread around the country, and eventually you will learn you we are, and what books we like to read. Don't be intimidated, just pop in and tell us who you are, and what you are reading now.
This is a thread we had on the WW 50 Year old board, so even though most of us have moved beyond our 50's, I am keeping it here. Some prefer to post on Facebook, but for those who may also like to post on something that resembles our old format, I decided to start this. Although we were brought together by our love of books, and we love to share our ideas about books and authors, our friendship has grown, and we know a lot about each others lives. We are spread across the country, and that adds a bit of interest as well, learning about other people's way of life through the "book" they write on the thread.

Good morning. Snow came, and snow left. Weather guy is saying 3". 29 degrees to start, going to 36, with snow a few times this week, along with the warmer temps.
Pinky, yes, what a difference a week makes is so right. Those dustings of snow I sure don't mind, if I had my choice of that or a dumping of 6". I forgot, what day did you say you are getting your vaccine?
Gareth, in the last couple years I have seen Robins early. One year, in April of 18, we had Blizzard Evelyn, starting late Friday and going all weekend, the going amount of snow was around 30", and the Robins were back by then, so I had DH blow out an area on the side of the driveway, in the grass, and put all kinds of nuts, bread with jam on, things like that for the Robins to eat, as there was no way they would be finding anything to eat for a while. Thank goodness it was a bit later in the winter so the snow melted sooner, with the warmer sun. But anyway, I think I have seen them back in March. It sure is nice seeing them!
Robin, I don't think DD had thought about going to LV till she got that unexpected check from the school system, even though her and her DD had been planning on going, if he was here. I was there in 69, funny how she stayed at the place where, in 69 I fainted out in front of Circus Circus. Weird. About the nail biting, it was happening while I was reading my Kindle, and doing it without thinking of it, not in my sleep. I bet that was so nice having Maddie take her nap at your house!! Hope she was awake for you, for some alone time with her, before her parents came back. I cancelled my Misfits Market subscription for now, and was looking at restarting Hello Fresh, but looking at the price for 1 person is just outrageous, so I didn't. I guess I have to learn that being single is going to cost more, no matter what.
Carol, I read some more about those very high electric bills; it sounds it is a deal the customer makes with a 3rd party biller; the customers get a cheap bill all along, unless something major would happen, then their bill would go up, and as last week was super major, the bill went that much higher, having to do with all the different options of energy being affected. The Governor of Texas is going to fight it, but from what I read, I am not sure there is anything he can do about it, with it being something the customer agrees to. So very happy your temp has gone back to a little bit more normal. I would be worried that something like that could happen again, with Global warming, I think we all should be on alert for extreme weather. My nail chewing idiocy is something I will have to pay attention to.
Hi to Anngie and Marsha.
It was nice taking the car out for a drive to the store yesterday, with the clearer roads. It needed to be run. I will miss that little car, when I sell it. That is if I ever get to sit down with DSIL about it. He is understandably busy right now, with ice fishing on the weekends.
Got a message from our Realtor that my DB house is finished!!! So right now I am trying to get everyone in the family in agreement as to when we will go over to the house and tour it. I will buy some good champagne, as DH and I said we would pop open a bottle there to celebrate. I am so happy for the guys!! He said it is on Airbnb, so their fingers are crossed they can start renting it out. Hopefully they can make a bit of money this coming football season, but I am a little worried, as I saw an article last night saying Dr Fauci thinks we will be wearing masks into 2022! Oh boy, I really do not think I have that kind of patience.
Dentist this morning, just a cleaning, but I am going to ask about the prices of getting an implant. I have a couple spots I would love to get filled in, but won't if it is too expensive on my budget. I think it is a tad foolish to be spending that kind of money on something that could get burnt up soon; as in cremation if I would die sometime in the near future. Then tomorrow I have an appointment at my Credit Union to redo the CD that came to maturity on the 20th. I think I will just redo it for another year. Will be taking DH death certificate with me to get his name off of all the accounts. I feel it is time.
Have a nice day everyone.

Yesterday I wrote a long post and it didn’t post! I can’t believe I did that. It’s pretty cold today and cloudy. I think it’s Thursday that will be up to 40 degrees.
Karen, was the book you were reading in bed suspenseful or bothersome in some way? Could that be why you were biting your nails? Movies can do that too. I’m glad DD had a getaway. She needed to get away for a bit. Since the meal deliveries are expensive, have you considered doing your grocery shopping online and have it delivered! I did it last week and picked it up in a designated parking spot in front of the store. I started a list and just kept adding to it through the week and then hit “send”. I, too, am picky about fruits and veggies but I have to say I’ve haven’t been disappointed yet. Just a thought.
Pinky, I listened to a piece on the news over the weekend about couriers delivering vaccines to rural communities in SD. What a wonderful way to help!
Gareth, when robins arrive here we know spring is coming! That’s our tell-tale sign. I just love seeing them. How’s DH?
Robin, glad you were able to spend time with Maddie. What a little doll she must be!
Carol, I heard that very same explanation of the high electric bills people are getting. I hope you are t one of them. Here, because of our climate, no one uses electric for heat unless there’s no other alternative. It’s just too expensive.
Hi Marsha!
Finished the Jan Karon book and looking for another.

Quick post now. Karen, it looks like DD is having a blast in LV, just walking around and seeing the hotels, as I thought she would. It's even great to see compared to Times Square, which looks amazing now, but nothing like LV. Did the girls stay by themselves this weekend? I didn't see many other people around, so didn't see much about mask wearing although I didn't see your DD in a mask.
It looks like the whole country is warming up. It definitely looks like we will get some rain later, no snow, but not even sure when that might start. I came up for the new Susan Mallery book, so that one I am taking. Also The Push, which is a thriller, so I have a lot to read now.

Stopping by quick before leaving for my bone scan and Prolia shot. I haven't heard how much snow we got but I'm thinking maybe 3-4" so not as bad as parts of the state. We'll be above freezing today for the first time in over two weeks.
Karen, did the g-kids go to Vegas too or who's watching them?
Anngie, thanks for asking. DH feels better but he still has some pain. I keep telling him he probably should see his urologist but I think he's waiting to talk to our PCP first.

So nice to have 25 degrees first thing in the morning and could get to 50 degrees---can you believe it?? The forecast for the week looks good too---most days in the 40's and a couple in the upper 30's for the next week. Maybe a 20% chance of snow next Saturday. I like it and hope the weatherman doesn't make any sudden changes.
Marsha---Happy Anniversary!!! Belated but I did not forget. Hope you had a nice celebration just the 2 of you.
Karen---good luck at the dentist. It will be so fun to see your DB's house and what they have done to it---sad too though I'm sure. I will address my vaccine below as someone else asked about it on Friday. Good to see your DD having fun. It made me miss our trips to LV this year as we should be going the first week in March for the Nascar weekend and also we didn't go in December for the rodeo. Also missed our trip we take to AZ in January---hopefully next year we will travel again. I guess all in all a good year to lump COVID and my sciatic and knee problem together because I'm not sure I was up for the travel. I hope DD comes back with all kinds of fun stories for you.
Anngie---interesting story, I did not hear that.
Robin---glad Maddie could visit with you yesterday.
Hi Gareth and Carol!
DH and I are getting are first round of shots on Thursday morning. They are starting with 65 and older and have enough they are starting those under 65. I will be 64 in March and DH 64 in July. I do not think anything with my health moved me up as DH is fine and they actually called him first. I think they are just starting under 65 in the order of age and the order of signing up. I had signed DH up first before myself and they called him first and then me. Who knows what the procedure is for sure.
I gotta get going---meeting with tax preparer at 10 to go over our final tax papers. Have a great day everyone!

Quiet weekend. I didn’t do much of anything. I finished The Vanishing Half – very good and I highly recommend it. I started Fifty Words For Rain but I have only gotten through the prelude. I spent most of yesterday making Hamentaschen. I made a batch of chocolate, then decided I wanted a batch with jam filling. I have packed up most of them to send to my kids but there are plenty left over and I ate way too many. The rest are going into the freezer. We ended up with Mexican for dinner last night for our anniversary. It was good but I think that’s enough of that for a while now. I had a vegetable burrito that was way too big and I only ate half. DS called to wish us happy anniversary. I didn’t realize he even knew when it was, but I suspect ddil keeps track of all that stuff. Happy to hear ddil is starting a new job today. She was not happy where she was working or the people she worked with and it was almost an hour commute for her. Now she is 5 minutes from home.
I am not surprised that Robin is having so much trouble getting out of the trial. It defeats the purpose of a double blind study if a participant knows what they got and they will have to eliminate her from their statistics, so they included her in the sample and now have to drop her after giving her 2 shots. I completely understand why Robin wanted to get out of the study and that was the issue we discussed when dd was thinking about going into the study. There will be some percentage of people that drop out of any study but it is their job to try to keep as many double-blind participants as possible.
My mother got her 2nd shot yesterday. I talked to her when she got home and so far not even a sore arm but tonight I’ll see how she feels. She said my cousin (teacher) said day 2 her arm hurt but that was all she had, but her son(pharmacist) was really sick.
Instead of the Nordic Track this morning I shoveled some snow. I started out just to do the porch and leave the rest for dh to snowblow later, then I decided to shovel the path to the porch, then a path to my car down the driveway, then I ended up doing half the driveway and decided to clean off my car. When I was cleaning my car the passenger wiper blade came off in my hand. I quit shoveling and went inside to wake dh to fix it. Then went out back to shovel a bit for Mitzi and play with her. So I got in my half hour of activity.
Pinky – funny how the 20’s seem so warm now. When I was out shoveling in my big down coat I was overheated, so I wore the lighter weight coat to work. This would be the one I bought last fall thinking it would be my new winter coat but then it wasn’t warm enough.
Gareth - good luck today with the bone scan.
Hi Anngie and Robin.

I went out today for the first time since Saturday, the 13th. My car key fob needed a new battery. I had forgotten about it and while DH had been driving my car, he used his fob. It took less 5 minutes for the guy at the battery store to put in the new battery. Since it was close, I went on to Target and got some groceries we were low on. At first I thought I would only need cat food and bread, but kept adding to the list. I was happy they had everything I needed. Target wasn't very busy.
The city announced though our water system is fully operational, we are still under the boil order for 48 more hours because they need to wait for test results on the water. I read dishwashers can be used if the water temp gets up to 140, I think. I believe our's get that hot, maybe more. It also has a sanitizing cycle. I tempted to use it. It's a pain to have to boil the water to wash the dishes in. I'm thinking, too, I could wash them in the dishwasher and then rinse them off with the hot boiled water.
We are expecting a higher than normal electric bill because we had the dehumidifier running under the house for 24/7 for 3 weeks and part of that time we also had the fans going under the house, too. I hope it is not in the thousands of dollars.
I need cut and color, too. My hair person had surgery 4 weeks ago on her hand and wrist for carpal tunnel. Also, I think her neighborhood was one of the last to get water. I'll probably wait until the end of the week to give her a call and see how she is.
I know what you all mean about brain fog. It just took a couple of minutes to come up with carpal tunnel.
Robin, great getting to be with Maddie!
Karen, I love looking at remodeled houses. I have looked on Zillow to see what was done to ILs old house. It's used as a rental and the new owner didn't do as much on it if they were trying to sell. Just a good cleaning made a huge difference. My sister sold her old house to a flipper. It was a big job and he was trying to sell it for an amount that I can't imagine him getting though it is so much better. One thing he did was switch the kitchen and dining room which made a big difference. It'll be fun for you to see your DB's house.
Gareth, good luck with your scan. That's one test I don't mind since there is no prep and body parts don't get squished up. Maybe your DH was still feeling bad since he wasn't taking the right amount of his meds at first.
Marsha, happy anniversary! I can always eat Mexican food.
Pinky, good you are getting your shots. DS and I both got a migraine a day or 2 after getting our second shot. I don't really know if it was from the shot or the weather changing. That's the thing with migraines, you don't always know what triggered them.
It's a beautiful day here, not cold, but cool.

Marsha, I am not out of the study, but I do know that I got the real vaccine. As long as I agree to still come in to get the antibody testing done, it's fine because the researchers don't know, and this helps them with their statistics. Everyone in the study will be eligible by the time they get to the 2 year mark, so obviously they couldn't just eliminate everyone. Snow shoveling definitely is good for activity points, as is house cleaning, I get exhausted doing that.
I end up being happy when the kids come because that is the excuse to make sure the house is really cleaned up. I do have to do more dusting though. It is pretty amazing how dusty things look when you really look. From a distance a lot of things look nice, but then you can start to notice.
Pinky, I am surprised that there are states where people cannot get vaccine appointments, but then in SD they are giving vaccines to people who are younger. Doesn't quite seem fair, truthfully.
Karen, good that your realtor can put the house on AirBnb, try to make some money. It will be interesting to see what they did with it. Your DD is sure doing a lot of posting on Facebook about her trip. I do know how exciting LV looks, and I am sure even more so to Pinky, although she is probably used to it by now. When is she coming back? I hope they went into the Venetian. I never stayed there, but the Palazzo in the middle of it with the gondolas is really something to see. I am not sure if they have those going or not. Too bad no shows.
We have had off and on snow and rain today. Right now it's 36 degree and raining, which it will still be doing when I get home, so not a good or pleasant dog walk, that's for sure.

Marsha---thanks for you thought on The Vanishing Half, I think it sounds good. What are hamentashen?
Carol---glad things are almost back to normal there. Boiling water is an inconvenience but doable. Nice you can shower and wash clothes at least.
Robin---My shot is in Minnesota actually. That is where we doctor only 15 minutes away. Our doctor signed us up and actually told us we should sign up at the clinic in our county seat too which we did. The first one that called is what we would take. I asked at the time if we should because they may want to save their vaccines for their patients at the clinic in our county seat----she said they just want everyone vaccinated and would be calling as we came up on the list. I know that 2 weeks ago at our Dr. in MN they were already doing the 65 year olds so just moving on the list as they are supposed to. I am guessing some people are saying no to the shot and that is making it go faster. Our DD also said we would soon be in the age group coming up at her clinic where she works. So maybe not fair to other states but it is where we are at in our area. I suppose if they are shipped out they need to get them assigned. What age group is NY on?

Pinky, NY is doing over 65, but under 65 with underlying conditions, but, pharmacies cannot give it to anyone under 65 regardless of underlying conditions. They should really distribute the vaccine based on need. There are a lot of elderly people in NY who have not been able to get an appointment yet, whereas in other states it is easy. Most health care providers are just now starting to offer them to patients, and only if you use a doctor that is affiliated with a major hospital.
