Well, I'm finally going through my closet to get rid of clothes that are too large. I didn't do this when I got back to goal five years ago, and then gained quite a bit back. I think it was a mistake back then. Now that I've been back at goal for almost a year, I'm sitting here looking at a huge pile of clothes that are going to Goodwill. Yikes! Hope I am doing the right thing.

Yes very scary. If I remember correctly, it took me more than a year to do that. Good job Sandy getting that done. I've been maintaining now for over 6 years, and I still have that little voice in the back of my head that says what if I gain it back again.
I like to think that being a little leery of gaining it all back keeps me on my toes and helps me maintain. But I can still think that way without having the actual clothes cluttering up my space - and my mind.

Sandy, when I got to my personal goal back in 2010 my dh asked me why I was getting rid of my too large clothes. He said what if you need them when you gain the weight back. I told him I was never going to gain it back so I got rid of the really large ones but kept some that I had never worn becuase I went down six sizes it seemed all at one time. Well I did gain back some so was able to use the clothing I had never worn but am now back to that all time low weight and this time I'm getting rid of ALL the too large clothing. I hope never to change my healthy eating habits that I've developed back to mindless eating but if I ever do gain I'll just buy a couple things as I no longer need a lot of clothing anyway.
And as someone above said, the clothing you donate will really help someone else...maybe as they go thru different sizes while losing weight and they can't spend a lot of money on transitional clothing.

I have two bags of winter clothes that are too big - seriously too big, not just "one size up".
I have clothes that fit comfortably now.
Those two bags need to get in my Jeep and head to the local charity drop-off box. I'll even be in "that neighborhood" later this evening, so it's REALLY a no-excuses kind of thing.
So let's see if I do it.

Sandi, after my 35 year revolution in the door with WW's, this last time was the first time I got rid of my clothes, even before I made goal...we were living in NYC and I would make subway rides to Goodwill, a few tote bags at a time. For me, it was part of the commitment to figure this out...after all, once I had been able to wear a few clothes I had been hanging onto for, literally, 10 years and saw how ridiculous I looked in them, it wasn't as hard. And it really wasn't the end of some gaining for me, it was just the first year of my 3 year journey to goal, but I still don't regret it (yes, I did have to buy a few new things and it killed me, it's so easy to just reach for those larger sizes when they are hanging there.) I love what susan092907 said...that little voice has never completely gone away and I never tell myself that I have this all figured out. For me, accepting that every day is a new part of the journey is part of the deal. I have been able to wear everything in my closet for about 6 years (those last few pieces did take a little while, LOL) and it is one of the perks of this process to be getting rid of things now because I'm tired of them or they look worn out. When people think that the fun ends with making goal, I remind myself of this. Good job! |

I was really reluctant to get rid of my "too big" clothes, too. But my DH said, "If, God forbid, you do regain some weight at some time in the future, won't you want to get clothes that are in style at that future time, instead of wearing things that are 20 years old right now and out of date?" Wise man! He knew how to appeal to my vanity, even as I was envisioning an ugly future.
And take a good look at those old "too big" clothes. Are they worn? Pilled? Stained? Stretched? Pulled out of shape? How did you feel when you put those things on in the morning? Were you just adequate? In that future moment, if you are already feeling down about having regained some weight, would you want to put back on things that fail to boost your mood?
Goodwill is not the only answer. Is there a consignment shop in your area where you might get a few $$$ for some items? Is there a clothes closet for abused women who had to escape a bad situation, or women returning to the work force? Is there an organization that provides clothing to victims of tornadoes or floods? As the others have said, your surplus items might be just the thing that someone else is desperate for.

I have put my really too big clothing in trash sacks but I haven't donated them yet.I plan to but at least they are tucked away and I don't plan to go back in those sacks.As soon as I get enough spring/summer clothes I will give away all but some tops I really like in 1 size larger for just wearing around the house.

Congrats on losing the weight AND getting rid of the too large clothes.
Yes, it is scary. But be proud of yourself!
At my WW meeting, on the first Saturday of the month, we bring in clothes that we no longer want/need. Open to all. Even if you don't bring something, you can take. Maybe suggest to your leader to start something similar.
Other options for clothes: Consignment, Dress For Success (helps women in need get ready for employment).

Something about reading this made me understand at a deeper level how insidious and painful this disease is (yes, I am calling it a disease) - How many other things in our life do we say "well when I go back again (which I know I will)"....I don't think there are too many if we have made a positive step. Somehow the weight issue seems to be in my very core. I am not at goal but I have decided I am gong to change my thinking about all of this and I have. I refuse to live in the negativity of it all. I say take your clothes and enjoy every day, every moment of your body.
My sister who lost 70 pounds over 15 years ago on WW (has had some ups and downs but never over 10#) told me when I was visiting recently. I made up my mind I would never gain that weight back again because I really knew I could never lose it again. Note: she didn't say I might gain it back; she said I will never gain it back. The other thing she said to me was "I do not eat things I don't completely enjoy".
I had to write this because I felt sad that when something wonderful happened like you got in a good healthy body there was that nagging, negative of "when I gain it back" NO! you will not
Please take this in the spirit in which it is written.

santex - Congratulations on the weight loss  I think it's been 4 times in my adult life that I've lost and regained 100 pounds. Two of those times I got rid of my large clothing. The two times after that I kept some larger size clothing that I considered "work clothes", since it was always difficult to find clothing I liked for work. This last (and final) time lost the weight I've been clearing out the larger clothes as I've lost, since I'm retired now. I did keep a few nicers items that are a size or two larger, and hopefully once I've maintained my loss for at least a year I'll donate them. I wear some of my larger clothes around the house since they are comfortable

It's very scary because I have been down this road before! I have maintained for a year and actually went to 2 consignment shops this weekend, most were too out of style, lesson learned!
