birdgal, there was an art to it! You had to stand/crouch on the swing and have someone push yo so you could lean forward and back to get momentum

We had a swing set, but it just had those big hooks that went into the ground so it wasn't stable enough. BUT the neighbors a couple of houses over had one that was anchored with cement. We could really rock and roll with that one. I sprained my ankle jumping off that swing.

We had a badminton set, and a croquet set. There was also one tree in the yard I could climb. The neighbors had built a one room building in the back of their yard next to our yard, and I would climb the tree in our yard and get on the roof of their building. Oh, and I had roller skates when I was young and we would go to the roller skating rink in town. There was also a miniature golf course in town. The city also had a pool in one of the parks. Oh and I played with dolls. I had a Ginny doll, a Jill doll, and a Ginette baby doll. Gave some of them away to a great niece.

Oh gosh, dolls lol I remember one from when I was very young called dancerina, she had a crown on her head and would spin when you pulled it Also Chryssi that had hair you could pull and make it longer (yeah, don't cut it with scissors lol -my mom was so mad!) And one, hmm, don't remember the name but she was astride a horse and her legs would move and push the horse so it looked like she was riding it.

I didn't like playing with dolls especially when my brothers played with trains.
I had a Betsy Wetsy doll. After she got her bottle she would pee in her diaper. Oh goodie! My fun time was changing a dolls wet diaper while my brothers played with that boring, colorful, fun train set that rolled along the country side. It went past farms with animals resting in the grass. When it passed over a road the RR crossing lights would come on winking and blinking for cars to stop. The gates would go down, so no cars would be stuck on the track.
It would go through tunnels carved out of the mountain, tooting its whistle and the light out front would be on when it came out. Yawn. How boring, huh? Much more boring than changing Betsys diaper again. Lol.

Some girls never outgrow their love of dolls though. My spouse has a Barbie doll collection.
Barbies from just about every place on the planet. They all have tons of clothing and accessories. They are not all blonde or White either. They have cars, pools, and pets. Some are doctors, lawyers, dancers, astronauts, and not one of them need their diaper changed! Lol.

birdgal, Barbie came along just when I got too old for dolls. I went through a period when I collected Ginny dolls. I have fond memories of playing with my dolls, and I loved their clothes. Years ago when the girl who grew up next door was about 7-10 years old she use to come over to our house. I would get all my dolls out for her to play with. One time I was busy in the kitchen and when I came into the living room she had made all the dolls pregnant and gave them breast with doll clothing. I guess she was in a hurry to grow up.

bbbearsmom, I forgot croquet. We had a set; lots of fun. No one had a fence except one family, luckily they were on the corner, - so we could run from backyard to backyard down the whole block. Those were the days.

lani, I lived in Southern California and everyone had a fenced yard. When I moved to Connecticut I had to get use to yards without fences. The rivers in the Los Angeles area were in concrete channels. I also had to get use to rivers that weren't in concrete channels.

This is such a fun thread. I'm all smiles reading it. Thank you. I needed a few smiles.
I was kind of athletic when I was a child. I especially enjoyed the games the boys played. Soft ball, basket ball, stick ball. The boys in the neighborhood would come to the door when they were putting together a team and ask if I could come out to play. I had twin brothers and Mom would tell the kids at the door the twins were home. Nope. They wanted me on their team, thanks anyway. Lol.
I wasn't very good at girl games. Didn't like them at all. I was always a 'steady ender' when I had to play girlie games like jump rope. I could stand there twirling the rope and watch the boys having fun. I never jumped. No thanks.

birdgal, hah. I was also what we called "an everlasting twirler" with the jump rope. I was a big climber too. Always breaking something, fingers, wrists, whatever. Also, due to vivid dreams I would wake up convinced I could fly. Sorry, not true little girl. That resulted in some unfortunate jumps off things.

I also like riding my bike when I was a kid. Never took it up as an adult.

Another topic could be pets we had when we were growing up. We had cats throughout my childhood. I now have three cats.

We had a chihuah (sp) from hell lol -he was so mean! He'd curl up and go to sleep on you and then attack you if you moved. We also had a Shetland Sheepdog named Bull - he was the sweetest thing ever. Not too bright though lol. 2 teacup poodles- father and son. Pepper and Muffy. Pepp was a black one and Muff was apricot. We had party lines back then and whenever the phone would ring, Pepp would go grab his stuffed toy lol. My mom and dad had a corgi mix named Sugar that was also sweet. We've had 3 since we've been married: Beaux was a tri colored basset hound, he was our "first child"; Shasta was a catahoula, beautiful coat, also amazing dog so sweet. Murray lol -Murray is psycho but he's a good boy We've had a cockateil, too, also named Bo. He would ride around on my shoulder wherever I'd go. He had free-reign of the apartment we had then, and would fly back to his cage to poop - he was really smart.
