12 Best Equipment-Free Strength Exercises for Older AdultsStrength training boosts quality of life at any age.By K. Aleisha Fetters, MS, CSCS and Lisa Esposito health.usnews.com/health-news/health-wellness/articles/2016-01-29/8-best-equipment-free-strength-exercises-for-older-adultsThis article introduces reasons that strength as we age is important and offers suggestions that require no gym or special equipment. It mentions that over 30 we begin to lose muscle mass, mentions not overdoing it by starting out slowly, and provides basic information. It does not suggest numbers of each to do. I thought we could look through the 12 suggestions and perhaps choose a few to try out or add to our daily regimen....or perhaps start a regimen.
9. Wall Slides
This wall exercise helps keep your hips and knees strong and serves as a good posture reminder, Peavy says.
Instructions: Stand with your back about 1 to 2 feet away from the wall with your feet under your hips. Lean your bum, back, shoulders, arms and head against the wall. Bend your knees and lower your body to nearly 90 degrees. Hold that position for three counts and raise back up. Perform two sets of 10 twice a day, Peavy suggests.
10. Pec Stretches
Instructions: Stand in the middle of a door entry space. Place both arms on the side of the doorway and gently step through to stretch your pectoral muscles. That helps prevent tight pecs, which can pull the shoulders forward and create a rounded shoulder posture, Peavy explains.

1. Comments on either of the above? I tried the first one - wall slides - and was not successful so looked it up online and it is not mentioned as such but more like the arm lift idea/angels? mentioned earlier. I could NOT do this one and wondered if it was like wall sits and what would keep a body from sliding down and not being able to get up...not trying this one again
2. Open forum - whatever you want to share cold shower yesterday since there was a problem with the solar water distribution. Guy came today and did something and should be able to have a hot shower or bath tonight.
3. FUN: Sounds outside your window...what do you hear? What do you LIKE to hear? Are the sounds different this time of year than other seasons?
This is because windows are open today and I realized that the wind blowing through tall trees was NOT the sound when we first built the house. Back then there were no trees...only scrub wild oak bushes. Now it sounds like a forest outside when the wind blows. The birds are singing and chirping and I can hear cars in the distance...far distance. At night there are jackals and frogs and insects and owls and sometimes foxes. The sounds are similar throughout the year...except there is usually no rain to listen to during summer or autumn.
I enjoyed reading about your gardens. Sorry HOLLY that your phone wasn't working. Did you figure out the problem? Forget about exercising...check in anyway. Maybe DANCE or something instead?

I've done wall sits in the past and I do a similar kind of stretch in a doorway. This door stretch is just a bit different and I like it as well.
Cathy, hope your water system will be fixed and Holly, hope your phone is working again. I fully agree, it is so frustrating when technology doesn't work as it should.
I liked hearing about gardens as well - thank you. It was unusually warm here last weekend, really made me think about gardening, but it's at least a month and a half before planting here. Some perennials are coming up too - peonies, iris around the foundation of the house.
Sounds - traffic (a background noise, don't really "hear" it most of the time) Also, lots of chatter from birds this time of year. Also have been hearing frogs in the evening...even though there is traffic noise from the fairly busy road not too far away, there's also a large undeveloped area at the end of our street, with a swampy area that attracts wildlife.

1. Comments on either of the above? ** Wall slides as I understand it are like squats but with your back against the wall. My knees won't let me do squats so I don't think I could do wall slides either. I'm sure I could do the other exercise though. I will try it. 2. Open forum - whatever you want to share ** Speaking of technology and phones, I got an alarm at 10:10 am yesterday and I don't have an alarm set for that time. I have no idea where that came from. The only thing I can think of is that I maybe set one at one time, but deleted it. Sometimes some of my contacts disappear from my contact list too, but when I go to re-enter one sometimes the information will show up when I put in the name. That is puzzling too, and it doesn't help to reboot the phone. 3. FUN: Sounds outside your window...what do you hear? What do you LIKE to hear? Are the sounds different this time of year than other seasons? ** I live out in the country so I don't get a lot of traffic sounds although sometimes I can hear the traffic on the highway which is a mile away. I hear bird songs, meadowlarks and robins are the loudest. Mourning doves are common in the late spring and summer, and lots of other birds. Sometimes at night I can hear coyotes howling. They howl for just a short period of time. Often I can hear an owl hooting. During the day I can hear bees and other insects. Bees especially when my crab apple tree is blossoming. And I can hear the wind blowing, which it often does here, more than I like.

These 2 exercises sound like something that I will definitely try. I think I have done the door thing before, but I am trying to find some new things to try, now that I am older & have so many aches & pains, it's hard to find things that I can do.
We went to an Amish community near us yesterday. They have the most beautiful plants that you can imagine. DH bought several bedding plants, he says he won't put them out into the ground until next week. I picked up a few things, a couple of flowers & a mosquito plant for DD. She has a terrible problem with mosquitoes at her house. I'm not sure if the plant will work, but I figured it was worth a try.
We live about a block & 1/2 from the L&N railroad track. We have lived here for so many years, I hardly even notice the trains flying by. I hear the birds singing & the lawn mowers humming int he back ground. Those are the sounds of spring.

Thank you, everyone. The replacement phone is scheduled to arrive on Monday. I emailed the students and their parents at least once (some twice) to advise them about my lack of a phone. A few emailed back to sympathize with me. So far, no one has called or texted DH for him to give me a message. I also emailed other people who call or text with more regularity than most, plus I emailed DS and DBIL, as well as DS and all of the grandkids on my side of the family. One more piece of good news: if you remember my mentioning I wanted a hot fudge sundae, know that I didn't go out to get one. (Yes, you're right, I did think about it...)
My chiropractor gave me an exercise to do involving leaning my shoulders and butt against a wall (feet about 6 to 8 inches away from the wall), and doing sets of 10 of pressing the "middle" part of my back there too (having to do with strengthening the muscles around my spine). So the exercise "wall sides" brought that back to me... (I haven't been doing it as regularly as I did when he first gave me the assignment...)
I'm always surprised that I don't hear the traffic. We're not far from a boulevard (I can see it from my office window upstairs)... In the early morning, there's a chirping. I never know how to distinguish the sounds made by squirrels compared with the sounds made by birds... Regardless, it sounds like spring. And I like spring.
