12 Best Equipment-Free Strength Exercises for Older AdultsStrength training boosts quality of life at any age.By K. Aleisha Fetters, MS, CSCS and Lisa Esposito health.usnews.com/health-news/health-wellness/articles/2016-01-29/8-best-equipment-free-strength-exercises-for-older-adultsThis article introduces reasons that strength as we age is important and offers suggestions that require no gym or special equipment. It mentions that over 30 we begin to lose muscle mass, mentions not overdoing it by starting out slowly, and provides basic information. It does not suggest numbers of each to do. I thought we could look through the 12 suggestions and perhaps choose a few to try out or add to our daily regimen....or perhaps start a regimen.
11. Standing Balance
Instructions: Hold onto a steady surface like a countertop or chair. Lift up one foot and balance on the other foot, holding the position as long as you can. Switch to the other foot and do the same thing. Eventually, work up to standing on one foot without holding onto the chair or countertop and maintain that pose for a minute or longer, then switch feet and balance on the other side. (Stay near the steady surface so you can easily reach it for support, if needed.)
12. Chin Up β Literally
"Every day, you carry a 'bowling ball' around your shoulders β because your head weighs 10 to 12 pounds," Peavy says. For every inch you let your chin drop, your head moves forward and rounds your shoulders, and you add more than 10 pounds worth of pressure, she notes.
Instructions: Keep your neck straight β but not stiff β and your head upright when you stand or walk. By doing so, you'll avoiding building pressure and pain in your neck, shoulders and back.
Make sure to mix some moderate cardio β like brisk walking β into your workout. Squats, planks, pushups, balance exercises and walking are the equipment-free exercises that Brennan most highly recommends.
QUESTIONS1. Comments on either of the above? 2. Open forum - whatever you want to share 3. FUN: Post Pandemic when we are all vaccinated and safe there are going to be things that we will be able to do again safely that we have not done or been unable to do for over a year. I suppose we could have done some of them but there have been restrictions set by governments and also personal ones based on wanting to remain safe. SO...I thought we could think about what we would do FIRST when we can...
Firsts:
* first plane trip you would want to make * first event you would want to attend * first event you might consider scheduling * first grooming visit you would make * first person or group of people you would want to see * first building you would visit
* first fix-it person you would call * first...let us know what else you might not be doing till it is safe and what would be a priority!
Thank you for being here this week and participating! We may not ever be great exercise aficionados but we an perhaps pick up a few ideas from this past week to incorporate (when we think of them).
Judy will take over on Monday...looking forward to it!
Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

I loved reading what you all have to listen to outside your windows. Sounds like spring has sprung and we are enjoying the changes! It is NOT so nice here today with the rain, wind and colder temperature BUT I know that the warmer weather will be back once this weather
1. Comments on either of the above? I like the idea of the balance in front of a counter. That could be done while cooking or waiting for a pot to boil I know my head feels "heavy" sometimes and now know why! I can't imagine adding MORE weight in wigs and hats and other things as was done in the past for "fashion" 3.
Firsts: * first plane trip you would want to make
I would get on a plane to the USA and stay at least a month. I would spend around a week with my son and his family (granddaughters), sister, brother, and my daughter IF we could figure out where I could stay and not create headaches for her fragrance-sensitive husband
* first event you would want to attend Wednesday cards and lunch with friends
* first event you might consider scheduling Wednesday cards with friends or an outing with them
* first grooming visit you would make haircut...NEED to have someone do it professionally, I think!
* first person or group of people you would want to see again...Wednesday friends...and family in the USA
* first building you would visit maybe a supermarket or the hair salon? I also need to get a new Lebanese passport at some point? If my daughter were to visit then it would be a museum, probably
* first fix-it person you would call probably a plumber to fix the closed off pipes that are dripping OR the AC person to service them before summer OR someone to fix screens?
* first...let us know what else you might not be doing till it is safe and what would be a priority! passes through...at least I hope it will be!
I don't really NEED anything and could continue on as I am doing now BUT am really missing being with friends on Wednesdays...also miss having someone else fix a meal once in awhile...and hair being trimmed professionally. I still might have long enough to have a bob almost grown out at the rate the vaccinations are rolling out. I won't have my first one till the 27th of this month so it won't be till June sometime that I am "safe" again!

1. Comments on either of the above? ** I do need to incorporate balance exercises into my routine. I just need to remember to do some when I'm just standing around. I also try to remember to keep my head up and back straight. It doesn't always happen and I have to make a conscious effort to notice when I'm not and then correct it. 2. Open forum - whatever you want to share ** Today sounds like it will be the nicest day for at least a week and I plan to get out and walk. It is supposed to be about 70 with not a lot of wind. 3. Firsts: * first plane trip you would want to make I'd like to go to Arizona and see family and friends. * first event you would want to attend * first event you might consider scheduling Nothing major comes to mind for either of the above, although I would start going back to Garden Club. I don't schedule any events other than with family. * first grooming visit you would make I've been getting my haircut but not as regularly as before. My hairdresser has only one other person in her shop and we both wear masks. * first person or group of people you would want to see A couple of neighbors and, of course family members * first building you would visit Maybe a couple of stores I haven't been in since this started * first fix-it person you would call Someone to remove a tree in my yard that my son and I can't do ourselves because of its height and awkward position in the yard. I could do that anyway because I wouldn't have to be close to them. * first...let us know what else you might not be doing till it is safe and what would be a priority! I would still like to take a road trip out to Washington, Oregon, California, down Highway 101, and visit my cousin in Oregon. It may never happen though, because my daughter who would go with me is working and the time we would want to go would be their busiest time at her workplace.

I have noticed my balance being off more & more. I think it is a part of aging. I am interested in trying some of the balance exercises. I have noticed that I can no longer stand on one foot for more than a few seconds. Trying it at the counter is a great idea.
Since we have had our 2nd shot since the first of Feb, I already feel much more relaxed. We have already had someone to come in and paint a bedroom & we have contracted the outside siding & gutters to be done. The contract says that they have to have it finished before July 1st, so they will be doing it any time between now & then. Also had a local charity come in & haul off a dresser that I was donating. I also was able to go to the dentist (for some much needed work) last week, without being so afraid. I had put the visit off for almost a year!
I have already enjoyed just walking through grocery stores & selecting what I want from the shelves, instead of doing the orders that I have done for the last months. I have already gotten a hair cut & a pedicure. I wasn't real comfortable in the pedicure chair, but I will go back. I am looking forward to going into a theater again to see a movie or a play. I am looking forward to going to a mall & just strolling around, in & out of the shops. Maybe an outdoor craft show! Oh, the possibilities are endless!

Balance is another thing on "the list" that I should/could do. I could do that while I'm feeding the dogs...waiting for them to eat. Keeping my head up, posture...all that is yet another thing to consider. Good thing during my work years, I was on my feet, lifting, moving. Not so good, the parts of standing and leaning over counters, serving, etc.
Nothing of note here - I went out early to get groceries and as usual, nothing in particular planned for today or Sunday.
Thanks Cathy - I've made note of these exercises and enjoyed the week. I'll be ready for Monday.
I don't have specifics for a lot of the locations/activities, but...
hope that I'll be able to volunteer again visit college friend for shopping, lunch and in-person conversation (a couple hours trip by car) go to dog training classes go to dog's vet appointments & be able to interact in person with staff (vs by phone from the vehicle) finally join community center/gym (was just days from joining when shut-downs started) browse at yarn store & other small specialty store in nearby town New carpet/flooring would be the first home improvement. We need some fence work too, that's mainly been slowed by supply issues, so I hope that will clear up as well.

Both exercises sound easy enough to start doing. And balance? Of course that's an important category. In general, balance has never been an issue for me, but even I will admit every once in a while I do lose my balance...
As for firsts: Plane: My youngest grandson has been admitted as a transfer student to the University of Oregon in Eugene. (I've already contacted Jan.) He was staying with his brother in Vancouver for a while and has returned to southern Oregon (his parents' house, my DS and DDIL's) but has already placed a deposit on some on-campus housing (dorm living). I'd love to go see him!
Events: not sure what I'd like to attend...
I schedule Zoom events all the time, so scheduling an in-person event? Also not sure...
Grooming: PEDICURE!!!!!!!!!!!
Person/People: go back to in-person services without the mask, without physical distancing, with hugs! and singing! (I'm currently attending weekday morning in-person services, but with masks and distancing and no singing...)
Building? Supermarket? Houses of worship?
Fix-it person: Dentist. I'm not sure that's what you had in mind, Cathy, when you asked this question, but that's really the first person I want to make an appointment to see professionally...
Other? Can't think right now...

Thank you, all! I enjoyed reading your comments and hope you enjoy the day - it is NOT a day for me to go outside except to feed the cat. Hoping for better weather tomorrow or later this week!

Not a nice day to be outside here either, nor will it be for most of the week. Wind, rain, and snow. Nuff said.

Fun to read what everyone wants to do when they get out & about again. Someone mentioned volunteer work, I would love to go back to helping in the homeless kitchen! I would love to go back to the food deliveries. Can't wait.
