Welcome to our 2021 Alcohol Free All The Way Board!
If you have been struggling with your weight and have found this board, you undoubtedly have your own unique, complicated relationship with alcohol and food. Laying out the problem honestly can give you the extra push you need to succeed in getting it under control. A few questions for you to think about...do you wake up at 3 AM wondering what did you do? Do you sometimes have no recall of the evening before or do you try to recover your memory of the evening before you even get out of bed? Is your spouse angry with you? Or do you simply think that A is taking over too much of your life, affecting your weight loss? Did you finish the bag of chips? cookies? or just spend the evening grazing? These are hard questions but know that you will find understanding, love, encouragement and support on this thread. We are each in a different stage of this journey but you will find others have shared your experiences. There is no judgment, just an acknowledgment that we have been there, done that and know we need and get the support from this great group of women and men.
Whether you are choosing to be AF or find you can achieve AIM (maximum of one drink per day for women and maximum of two drinks per day for men), please join us if you feel this challenge meets your needs.
The main focus of this board is to be ALCOHOL FREE. The focus of our new challenge is to commit ourselves to success, one day at a time, one hour at a time....success breeds success! Follow a healthy food plan, exercise and stay AF.
As with all of our challenges, everyone is welcomed. For some making the commitment for the entire challenge is the way to go, but day by day is also a way to go. No one is cut from the challenge, and if you don't want to be part of the challenge, you are still welcome to post

NEW CHALLENGE
CARING April 5 - July 4
“Your body is precious. It is our vehicle for awakening. Treat it with care" - Buddha
This challenge is about caring about and for yourself. So often we get caught up in taking care of everyone else that we don’t give ourselves the care we need. Or we give up caring about ourselves. A variety of reasons and for no reason, it just happens. The hard part is to recognize it and once you do, it is hard to explain because very few want to acknowledge it. You get kudos for taking care of others, not so much for taking of yourself. Not caring about yourself can leave an emptiness that you may try to fill with food and alcohol. The emptiness remains, just stuffed down. We want and need more for ourselves. So let’s begin!
Treat yourself the way you’d treat someone you love.
Love yourself first and the rest will follow.
Focus on health and well being
So how do you begin to care about yourself?
Eating fruits and vegetables sounds like a plan. So does drinking water!!
Walking up a flight of stairs without gasping for breath. Your heart will thank you.
If you don’t want to be AF then restrict the amount and limit the days you will allow yourself a drink. But remember if 10 is not enough, one is too many.
Start with baby steps. Making too many changes at once can be discouraging so start small. Have you been slacking on flossing daily? Then start making it a ritual. Do you drink soda for energy? Start cutting back by one.
Treat yourself to something you enjoy. Buying the store brand face cream will sit on the counter. If you have a favorite, budget it in as a necessity….better than buying alcohol! Maybe getting a manicure or pedicure is important to you yet you deny it for yourself. Ask yourself why.
Make a list of indulgences that aren’t food or alcohol and start sprinkling them into your life.
Ask for what you need. Too many times we get into a funk and we don’t ask for help. You are loved and we want to help each other.
Curb all the justification. Sometimes you just have to do something because you want to do it. You don’t have to explain yourself!
Think of your successes….add three things that went well today to your daily journal. What?? you aren’t journaling? Journaling is caring!
LET THE CARING BEGIN!!

It was overcast and breezy a lot of the day. We walked at the nature trail, then got started on weed hill. DH used a hoe to clear an area and I dragged branches I had cut earlier further into the woods where there was already a wood pile (builder, neighbor?) We were only out there a couple of hours, but we were both wiped out afterwards. The neighbor that's always in his yard came over and said we should hire someone to clear the weeds. That might be what happens, LOL. Just when I was ready to settle on the couch after showering, my replacement called needing help with a presentation for last evening. After that was done, I took a nap and felt much better afterwards. I'm sore today, but not much worse than usual.
We were supposed to get rain overnight, but it never came. Today is partly cloudy and breezy. Today and tomorrow is the neighborhood yard sale. We're going to head out soon. I may set up a couple of tables tomorrow to try to get rid of some of my craft stuff and some other odds and ends. I don't have enough stuff to warrant sitting out there for two days, plus I want to got look at other people's stuff.
Murphy- It's good to have options now that we are no longer working!
GG- WTG for OP, rollovers, making a list. DH has a catamaran that can convert into a kayak and also has pedals to use if the wind dies when sailing. It only comfortably seats one and he hasn't used it in years. He's dying to take it out on the lake. If he doesn't use it this summer, I may push to put it in NEXT year's garage sale.
Liz- Glad the project is progressing well.
Cindy- GL with the hole drlling, new bushes. I'm sure going through the memories boxes is slow going.
Cathy- WTG tracking, staying positive, getting activity. GL with your reviews.

April 5 - July 4 April 5 start weight: 194 What it showed this morning! April 12: 193.1 April 19: 193.5 April 26: 195 Exactly where I was last year! May2: May 9: May 16: May 23: May 31: June 6: June 13: June 20: June 27 July 4: Good morning. Some days I'm such a contradiction to myself it's mind boggling. Went through my intro of the AE book, looked at the journal pages that have you write all your beliefs about A, your Whys...why you drink, why you want to quit, then my mind goes into overdrive and feels like I'm being cheated or denied something and wants a send off. LIke when I would say I was going to start a diet and then the night before you had to eat everything you thought you could never have again. An interesting twist last night, DH was going to the store and asked if I wanted "anything" I said I don't know should I be good or bad? (broken thinking right there), he replies, be bad....I don't like to drink alone. So that was interesting to me. I wonder what it would take for me to say, then why don't you not drink with me and make both our lives healthier? So, put that in my brain to mull about today and move on. I told him last night I bought my AE book and was committing to working through it and seeing how I feel at the end of the experiment. I'm going to photocopy the journal pages to write on and fill them out today, that way if I need to pass the book on, or go through it multiple times I can revisit my whys and challenges. Sorry I'm such a flake but I know this is all part of my process to get where I need to be. Good thing God, Karma, the goddesses and all of you are so forgiving and don't kick me out of here It's a beautiful day here and a new chance to make a change. I'll be checking in this evening. Hugs to you all. Jan Amy Sounds like a busy day. It might be a good idea to hire someone to at least do the weeds the first time and then you just work to keep it up. Hope DH gets his boat out and gets some use out of it. We still need to get ours figured out but it's not really warm enough to go out yet I don't think, altho the fishermen aren't stopped by the cold!! yay for better choices, I need to get on that wagon. have fun at the yard sales. We're going to plant our iris now, I think they can go in anytime. yay for your peony blooming. Liz I did get your recipe and can't wait to try it. Glad the projects are getting done, sorry about all the pipe glitches. Will you see the baby this weekend? Hope the headache got better. GG Yay for an OP day. I can do so well for a string of days and then bam, back to square one. I think when I used to go to actual meetings on Saturday mornings it helped keep me on track at the end of the week. I may look into going back at the end of summer. I think is served as both my WW and AA "meeting" accountability. I was given the name of a surgeon but no one really talked about a possible hip. I don't think we've done enough research at this point. Some days it's fine, others not so much. I really do know if I would lose this weight and take care of myself it would help. Cindy Purging is always a slow process. I have also been going through all the old photos from mom and family. When we were developing film we always got duplicates to share and now we have all those extras, but still hard to throw away. Hope you can revive the soil or bushes by the house. I bought manure/compost the other day that we will spread out today, hopefully won't stink out the neighbors. We are going to put grass seed on some of it for now and then design a bed near the driveway side. Always a project. We need 3 estimates for the concrete to go to the city about the loan, can't even get guys to come out and do that as they're so booked up already. Murphy I looked at the map and the campground that's booked is inside the entrance to the park outside of Gatlinburg so I'm thinking I don't want to do the curvy drive if it gets dark. We'll have to plan ahead for that. Glad you can do the chores on your own time. Hope you got your Manicure scheduled. It felt so good to get my toes done yesterday!! Cathy Did the reviews get turned in before bed? Hi to all. Will check in later.

Good morning! I've been to Walmart to pick up my order, the bank to get money and went through the car wash! Next I have to portion out the meats and vacuum seal them for the freezer. Walmart substituted a huge pack of chicken wings for the small package that I ordered! So I have enough chicken wings to have a big party! LOL
Cindy - hope the rain is gone by now. I wish we could get a good day of rain to settle the pollen down. I have a box full of all the letters that my dad wrote mom while he was overseas for 3 years during WWII. She never would let us read them so they have been tucked in my cedar chest since she died. I could NEVER get rid of them but I can't seem to let myself read them either! I only hope that when I pass, my great niece will keep them. Whether she reads them or not!
Amy - lots of activity points for all the yard work!
Jan - We will definitely work out a route for you! That long drive is beautiful during the day but definitely not what you would want to do at night! Will you and DH be camping too or will you get a room or cabin?
Well - the meat is calling! Unless of course all of you want to come over and we will have a party with all the chicken wings!! After I get that done, I'm going to start working on the garage. I'm going to purge and box some stuff up for a yard sale, get some other stuff ready to donate and pitch a bunch! Hi and hugs to everyone! Murphy

Well since no-one said they were coming for supper, the meat is packed and in the freezer! LOL. The garage is somewhat straightened up and I even boxed up some stuff for a potential garage sale the next time we have one. Now I'm just sitting down to a lunch of egg salad, crackers and a glass of milk!
Jan - when is it that you and your family are coming to the Smokies? I just saw a news story that starting May 5th through Sept 1st, every Weds is "vehicle free" in Cades Cove. Meaning it's only for bikes. If you aren't familiar with Cades Cove, you can Google it. It's a 11 mile loop through a restored mountain community. Several old home places, 3 churches, a mill and just beautiful vistas of the mountains. As active as your son is, I could see him liking that. There's no charge for it whether you bike or go in a car and I really recommend it.
I think I've done most of the physical work I want to for today. Need to do some work on the HOA stuff but I think I will just chill! Murphy

Hi friends! I’m on lunch break for my last double shift, until next Friday! The sun is out, a little chilly but that’s ok! My hair isn’t as short as I thought, I chickened out, but she wants me to come back after work to add some layers (she’s my friend and we work together on Friday mornings) I feel so much better though.
Amy, can you post some pictures of weed hill? I can’t envision it.
Jan, I’m starting to want another dog. DH says absolutely not We’ll see! I thank God for Bowie, he’s a life saver. I don’t like double shifts, it’s too long/ boring. I have one every Friday, 1 isn’t bad but more than that stinks. You must be so excited to see DS. How many of his friends are coming? Do you know them? If a hip replacement is as life changing as my knee replacement I would highly recommend it.
Murphy, I love wings!
Liz, I’m so happy Chris’s bbq area turned out perfect. I think the rocks would look so much nicer than mulch, I may steal your idea!
Gg, when is your surgery?
Cindy, I’d rather shred documents too—it’s kind of cathartic!
Hi Cathy! Have a great day!!

Hi girls. Just got back from a yard sale. I found some puzzles for Rylee. They are the kind they make sounds when you put the piece in. I had sirens ringing from the back seat the whole way home! Other than that, not much going on. I think after all these years, you know I’m a pretty simple person. I ordered a new bra and the beige ones were all sold out. As I was getting dressed this morning, I was like, wow, look at me with my pretty pink toes and pretty light blue bra! Lol
Cindy: I had to smile. I can just picture you with big holes all through your yard! Like a treasure hunt! But I know that’s not the kind of holes you are talking about! It’s so hard going through pictures! Once they’re gone, they’re gone!
Amy: Lol about the catamaran in next years sale! Will it be hard to transport to the lake? Do you need a trailer? It sounds like it would be fun once you get there!
Jan: Oh, that A is so sneaky! I totally get the mentality of going overboard because tomorrow you don’t get it! That’s what I did with the 50 point DQ Blizzard. A small would have been fine. I wasn’t even enjoying it at the end! Maybe that’s a question to ask, How did you feel at the beginning, middle, and end of the evening, and then this morning? As for DH, of course he wants you to drink with him. Mine still every now and then tries to get me to drink. I have to give him a firm no. It probably comes down to what you really want and why. You’ll get there!
Murphy: Good for you getting your work done! We have free Showtime this weekend! I’m recording for later!
Carole: One thing, you can always go shorter, but it takes awhile to grow back! My surgery isn’t until 6-25.
Waving to Cathy and Liz!
