Whether you are regular poster or a lurker, we encourage you to talk with us. We do talk about books, but also about our lives, and Weight Watchers. We are women who are spread around the country, and eventually you will learn you we are, and what books we like to read. Don't be intimidated, just pop in and tell us who you are, and what you are reading now.
This is a thread we had on the WW 50 Year old board, so even though most of us have moved beyond our 50's, I am keeping it here. Some prefer to post on Facebook, but for those who may also like to post on something that resembles our old format, I decided to start this. Although we were brought together by our love of books, and we love to share our ideas about books and authors, our friendship has grown, and we know a lot about each others lives. We are spread across the country, and that adds a bit of interest as well, learning about other people's way of life through the "book" they write on the thread.

Good morning. Cloudy and 70 already to start the day, with rain and storms expected today, with a high of 82.
Marsha, so far having the kids here has gone good, I may just see if they want to go out to the Wildlife Sanctuary, if it is not raining. Between the kids and DH and I, that is a favorite spot to go to. I would like to get a walk on one of their nature trails. I think Robin's thinking of the Endo is correct. I would encourage your DD to keep that appointment. You never know, and if the pain settles down for awhile, and you cancel, then the pain comes back, you are kicking yourself you canceled. Just to be on the safe side, keep the apt. Nude! I should have thought of that, thank you! Way to go on the sewing machine! Funny, my DD just bought a sewing machine, late this past winter, and is loving it. She brought it over here to shorten my bedroom drapes, and wizzed right through it.
Gareth, wow, so sorry for your DDIL, and her shoulder issue. That must have been painful to deal with. I think being a Physical Therapist is the career to go into, as it seems after every surgery, the patient goes into therapy right afterwards. Lol. Omg, my grand kids loved that joke on FB last night!!!! They said, if DH and I had a cat (which we did for a few years, taking care of DD2 cat, till the cat passed on from old age) that would be us! I am seeing more and more people WEARING the masks!!! Isn't that funny! Everywhere I went yesterday, almost everyone was masked. I wonder if the anti maskers are now wearing masks to rebel against the CDC? (that was a joke, but still....)
Pinky, I was worried for nothing, the kids and I had a great time last night. It did get goofy for a while, as the other day I had dug my Google home mini back out, to set it up correctly; they saw it and was having so much fun asking her very strange questions. And the answers she was giving! Very funny. I would have never thought to ask her those questions. Spending too much at those gardening stores is how I was the past couple years, for our deck. Now that DH is gone, I have no desire to decorate it at all. I still like looking at all the floral arrangements when I walk by them, but otherwise no interest. As I mentioned to Gareth, it seems that from Monday to yesterday, all the places I have gone; it seems that MORE people are wearing them!!! What the heck? The price for queen and king sheets have been expensive for quite awhile.
Anngie, we have the same weather prediction. Yes, the kids and I have been having such a good time. Of course I let them stay up very late last night, but as they are older now, I am sure they can handle it. The tradition with them staying with us in the past was that the next morning, I would make a big breakfast. Well no sooner than we were all settled in yesterday, with all their belongings, and the Papa Murphy pizza waiting to go in the oven, than the asked what I was going to make for breakfast, hahaha! I wouldn't mind wearing a dress, but that might be hard to find, with most styles going sleeveless, which I hate. So most likely pants. I think the hoarding just evolved over time, since they had the grand kids. We used to go over there for the kids birthday parties, and it was a tad crowded in there, but nothing that would say hoarders. As to mask wearers, see what I mentioned to Gareth and Pinky. I hate buying sheets!!! Since it has evolved into so many different materials, it takes a lot of work picking them out and the prices!
Carol, I just do not understand people that turn into hoarders. They weren't that way in the beginning. I do understand how they feel once their home is so full of everything, they are overwhelmed as to how to clean it up, but most of them are fine with it being so cluttered. Loosing internet, even with having high speed, and DSL, still happens to us. Not fun, since it controls our TV's now too. We too are in an active weather pattern as the weather guys say. Rain chances every day for at least the next week. But that is ok, but once next weekend comes, that is the unofficial start of summer around here, with camping starting for all the campers. Weird to think next weekend is Memorial day weekend. This spring has just flown!
Robin, I picked the kids up after school yesterday, as DD2 and her DH left yesterday morning, for the concert last night. I have them for the whole day today. So far the time spent with them here, without DH has gone very well. I am hoping the rain holds off till this afternoon, so I can take them to the Wildlife Sanctuary. It is our go to place to take the kids. Although we have an excellent zoo, too, but I love the nature trails at the Sanctuary. (and free is a great price!) I was just kidding about coming to Wisco. Have you decided yet, where to go? And when would that be?
Omg, the romance scammers are coming out of the woodwork, on my IG account! I have to figure out how they are finding me. I have been on IG for quite awhile, and not had this issue, till just recently. I am getting tired of having to go in and deleting them. I was talking to one guy, (so sad that all these idiots think that all women are prey to their charms!) the other day, and of course he wanted me to go to whatsapp, but I refused, so then he wanted my email address, and I refused, so now it seems he has accepted the fact that I won't let him sucker me into that stupidity, so he has been chatting with me very nicely. But I have to figure this out further, as to how they are seeing me, to approach me. Maybe it will come to changing my profile name. Then I might have peace for awhile.
That pizza was so good last night!!! But very stupid to eat pizza before weigh in this morning. At least I lost a few ounces, lol.
The invitations are to be delivered BY the 24th, so I guess I better keep an eye out for them.
Time to go make breakfast. Have a great day, everyone.

We are having the same weather as Karen---supposed to be 82 here too today and humidity---I could do without that,
Marsha---good to know you have some answers on DD. Hope she is feeling better today.
Karen---glad you are having fun with the GK, I knew you would. What a great idea to go to the Wildlife Sanctuary and get your walking in at the same time. Enjoy your time together and making memories. Be careful of those scammers.
Gotta go----hi to everyone!

Robin, I am one of those people who could live on bread. I love the biscuits from Cracker Barrel and Red Lobster.
Marsha, hope your DD is feeling better. I have found that Kung Pao chicken and really spicy hot sauce bothers me. When we order from our favorite Thai place I get a wimpy spice level 2. I used it to get it hotter but it made my acid reflux worse.
I hate it when people tell horror stories about some illness or accident they had. For instance, my sister crashed after having knee replacement surgery and had to be in ICU for a couple of days. I don't share that when someone I know has the same surgery.
It seems like not many young people sew these days. My DD can sew on a button and repair hems and that is about it. I don't sew as much as I used to. I have the first serger my mom had, but I haven't used it a long time.
Pinky, how is your DGS doing?
Anyone have any good ideas for high school graduation gifts?

Similar weather here as Pinky and Karen so it must be a widespread weather pattern. Hoping we can walk when DH gets home but it looks pretty iffy with rain chances of 60% I know we need the rain. Just wish it would rain overnight. Listened to my book while doing laundry and walking downstairs. I'm liking Roommates Wanted. It got off to a slow start. Glad I stuck it out now. It's just so much nicer when a book grabs me right away.
Karen, glad it all worked out with your DGC. I was sure it would. Glad I was able to contribute to the laughs. I love that Pickles cartoon. How about a nice capris or cropped pant outfit for the memorial? I sounds like more of a casual affair than what a dressy affair would warrant.
Robin, thanks for sharing about DH's shoulder surgery. Interesting about the sawing effect. I'd wondered what could cause a tear.
Carol, as far as I'm concerned gift certificates or cash make the best graduation gifts.
Marsha, how's DD today?
Hi Anngie and Pinky!

A word on hoarders. I can absolutely see how things can gradually take over. My dh has hoarding tendencies. It starts out very small but slowly things get added and either there is no place to put them or no inclination to find a hidden spot so they pile. And not always big things. I have been thinking I need to go through my kitchen utensils and toss out the ones I never use, and lo and behold a new one shows up that dh saw at a store that he thinks might be useful. Then of course he doesn’t cook so it’s in my way. He bought some kind of thing for breaking up ground beef that I hated and eventually tossed, then years later he’s in the kitchen trying to help with the cooking and asking for that thing. (My cousin told me that she tossed a lot of her husband’s things when she packed for that move a few weeks ago and he hasn’t noticed they are gone – but she is a serious minimalist and really has no clutter whatsoever in her home to the point where it looks a bit impersonal)
DD is doing much better. She had no pain yesterday after dinner so she decided to sleep in her bed last night. I woke her at 8 to give her a pill. She had made it through the night no pain so I think the meds are kicking in. She is thinking she’ll go back to school on Monday. Tomorrow ds and ddil are having a birthday party for ddil’s father (he turns 60) so we will go there. DD was planning to drive there from Madison and stay over but I think she’ll go with us which means she’ll have to come home with us too. Then Sunday she has a test due, so we’ll get her things organized and ready for her to go back on Monday.
Carol – I did a fair amount of sewing before my kids were born and when ds was little I made his Halloween costumes but at some point it became more expensive to make things than to buy them and my sewing machine went into the closet and stayed there for years. I pulled it out at the beginning of the pandemic to make masks and found that I enjoy the meditative quality of sewing. DD learned basic sewing skills at school but never had an interest but apparently she’s been watching you tube or tik tok videos where women buy things at thrift stores and alter them and make them really nice outfits so she’s getting interested. She brought home a pair of pants she bought at a thrift store that she wanted to make into shorts and something that needed a button and she enjoyed the process. I decided a basic machine which does straight and zigzag will get her a long way for a long time if she never develops a passion for sewing so I think the one I got will suit her just fine. My cousin in LA does a lot of sewing – all her own alterations and she’s made at least 100 masks during the pandemic and a stack of baby quilts to give away. She made my veil for my wedding.
Karen – sounds like the visit with the gk is going well. Glad you are having fun. Is the children’s museum open? I haven’t been there since dd was small so I don’t know if it’s just things for little kids or what but I just thought about it.
I finished Oona Out Of Order. It was a nice light read, a good pallet cleanser, but not a great book. I’m not sure what’s next. I have the 2nd book in the series that my bff’s brother wrote, I may read that.

Karen, glad last night went so well. I will bet that everyone is like me, we read your whole post, not just what you write to me. Pizza can absolutely do that to you, good that you at least lost a few ounces. I would go with slacks and some kind of nice to too. I bought this very springy looking light weight sweater at Kohls that is so pretty, but not sure if you would feel too warm wearing that during the summer. I actually borrowed the idea to buy it from Terry. She put a pic of it on our Facebook group, and I loved it. I bought 2 different shells to wear underneath, one yellow, one a cornflower blue.
Carol, I would say that the best thing as a HS graduation gift is a gift card. If you know what the person is doing after HS, and where they will be, then maybe Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, Pizza, Buffalo Wild Wings, something like that. If it's a girl, maybe a nice make-up or travel bag.
Gareth, that sawing thing did make so much sense, I figured I would pass it on. This was DH's 3rd shoulder surgery. One was when he was still in his 20's. One was when he slipped in a bathtub and tor his rotator cuff, this most recent one we had no idea.
Pinky, how was that baseball game last night? We have been having temps in the 70's, which is so beautiful.
Marsha, maybe Oono Out of Order would be a good summer book. I finished all the Bridgertons last night, and not really stuck on anything I like. I do have my book club book. Glad DD is feeling better. As for me, I am having that pain just where she was.
Hoarders, I can almost see how it happens, and I try to avoid it, but I would probably be in that hoarder category if I had a smaller house. DH just finds a million things he always needs so badly. The other day he saw a nice measuring spoon set he liked. I don't care if it was $10, we didn't need another set. Yes, this has a narrow one that can go into a jar, but really, so what.
Karen, when we went to Wisconsin Dells we had a great time, so I would not really complain about that. Of course we were with a really nice group. What I remember being there as a kid, on one of our trips up to Winnipeg, was that it was so buggy!
Quiet afternoon here. DH let go one of the paralegals, who we replaced. She didn't say anything to me when she left. I am not sure this other person is that much better, we will see.

Carol - one of the best ideas I have seen for high school graduation gifts is one my ds got and I suggested to a friend who was asking for an idea for dd. If the graduate is going to college, a gift card to the bookstore wherever she is going. They can use that for school apparel or supplies or books or whatever they want. DD used hers to buy the bib overalls that everyone wears to football games - no way would I have paid for that but because she had the gift card she was able to get a thing she loves and will wear maybe 10 times before graduation and then never wear again.

Robin - congratulations on finally terminating that paralegal. I think congratulations are appropriate as you have been complaining about her productivity for a very long time and i think it's good you finally got rid of her. HOpefully the new one will step up now.

Karen, glad you and DGK’s had such a nice time together - nice, too, that you had the wildlife preserve to walk through. You worried for nothing! Once or twice I watch a show called Hoarders. Have you ever watched it? I really like wearing cropped (not capris so much) and palazzo pants. They’re stylish and more flattering than capris. OMG romance scammers! Be careful!
Carol, I could live on bread - all kinds - too! What’s worse, I enjoy baking sweet breads. A friend of mine gave me rhubarb from her garden - so now I’ll bake a loaf of rhubarb bread. Just what I need as DH doesn’t like it. Hey, can’t let it go to waste. Me too - gift cards are the best!
Marsha, glad to see DD is doing better today! I had to laugh re the kitchen utensils! My DH wouldn't even know what a spatula is! It’s only been the last two years that he’s even been using the grill.
Robin, is this paralegal the replacement for the one you were talking about a month or two ago? I’m sure it’s very difficult to have your own law firm and not be able to find good paralegals. Why is this? Is their training not what it used to be? I came up for Midnight Library but had to delay it for two weeks. I’m reading Quartet in Autumn and have another ready to pick up Monday. Just not enough hours in a day!
Hi to Gareth & Pinky!

Anngie, the problem is a lot of people call themselves paralegals when they really are not. Also, this one is going to law school at night, so DH figured if she could get into law school she must be smart. The problem is that her work ethic is terrible. And, she took forever to do whatever she was asked to do, then would put in for a lot of hours to do a task that I knew I could not charge the client for. DH has found that the best paralegals are the ones that he has trained, or can figure things out on their own, which is basically what I have done. I have started to take over more of the Medicaid applications. To me they are just like doing mortgage applications. Sometimes DS leaves those for too long, doing other things, or on phone calls, he has gotten really busy. Honestly too many things to go into.
Oh Karen, I forgot about what you said about Instagram. I am sure you don't really want to, but you might try one of the dating websites. I know a lot of people who have met people on those, including those they have married. Everyone from my niece to two of my BFF's. If you ever decide that you want to do that anyway.
