Whether you are regular poster or a lurker, we encourage you to talk with us. We do talk about books, but also about our lives, and Weight Watchers. We are women who are spread around the country, and eventually you will learn you we are, and what books we like to read. Don't be intimidated, just pop in and tell us who you are, and what you are reading now.
This is a thread we had on the WW 50 Year old board, so even though most of us have moved beyond our 50's, I am keeping it here. Some prefer to post on Facebook, but for those who may also like to post on something that resembles our old format, I decided to start this. Although we were brought together by our love of books, and we love to share our ideas about books and authors, our friendship has grown, and we know a lot about each others lives. We are spread across the country, and that adds a bit of interest as well, learning about other people's way of life through the "book" they write on the thread.

Good morning. Another chilly morning, with the temp at 41, with hopes of getting to 54, then each day getting warmer.
Robin, I guess I was the fool, thinking back earlier in the spring that I could just plan the memorial dinner and hopefully have a pretty good turnout, without giving a thought that there would be drama, that eventually would include our little family, and DD2 in laws. My goodness, how naive I was back then, lol! I am now trying to figure out how I define DH brother, to me. Do I still call him my brother in law? Sounds like everyone have already received their invites, and he sent me a message last night, mentioning his step son. Oh for Pete's sake! I forgot to invite him! So he is being kind enough to just let his step son know about it. I wonder who else I forgot?! Do you have any plans for this weekend?
Marsha, I did not know soil could get tired!!! That is interesting. I hope our weather is nice to you this weekend, so you can get everything done. 10 bags of compost! Oh boy! Will your DH help with all of that? Have you decided on your destination for your weekend away? How is your DD doing, now that she is back to Mad town? Hope all is well with her.
Gareth, our weather up here is just stupid. I would hate to be one of the majority here that are packing up to go camping today for the weekend! The weekend temp is supposed to be in the 60's, with night's being chilly, but I see by the end of next week back up to around 80. Maybe the people wearing masks here at the stores are just standing out now, since the mask mandate is over. I mentioned that to my DS yesterday and she said she did not notice more people wearing masks. So I don't know why I think I am seeing more mask wearers. I am of the same mind as you, concerning gardening. Tried it once years ago, too much work for me. A few years ago we did plant cherry tomatoes and one other thing that escapes my mind right now, and that was ok, as it wasn't much, but otherwise I agree with you.
Carol, I am surprised anyone is wearing masks there in Texas. After hearing all the stories of going against the mandates and all, earlier in the spring, you would think the majority of people there do not wear masks. I too saw at WM the other day most employees, if not all, wearing masks. Thank you, about the drama. Yes, about the seal, what it is, is that with the seal, it is a bit raised, so the envelope is not able to go through the machine smoothly. So heaven forbid, it has to be manually processed. I did not have any interest in gardening, but I did like decorating the front of the house, with bushes and flowers. I wish I could get that interest back, from what I had, when we first moved here, but I lost that interest when DH died.
Pinky, hello, nice to hear from you. My goodness, even when you are having fun, you are busy, lol!!! Will you be doing all your planting this weekend? Hope your weather is good for you to do all of your work.
Yesterday I came within a hair's distance from having an accident. Coming out of the driveway of the grocery store, I was picking up speed, and a car turned in front of me, almost getting T boned by me. All my bags of groceries that I had on the back seat ended up on the floor, I stopped so hard. I really, really thought I was going to hit that vehicle. I have to say, it was a very elderly man. All the way home I was just shaking, I was so mad and upset! Someone is watching out for me.
Every so often I go on the management company's website that owns this apartment complex, to see if any of the apartments are available, and usually there is not any. Yesterday I saw that one of the upper's in the next building over is for rent, and, the rent went up $30!!! When I talked to the landlord the other day, we got to talking about the complex someone is building around the corner, or bend here, and he was saying how expensive it is now to build, with the cost of wood and all now, being so ridiculous high, that the rent for those apartments are very high. I guess I should have took that as a warning! So if sooner or later they raise my rent by that amount, I for sure will be moving.
Have a wonderful day everyone.

Good Morning---we got a nice rain around here and finally it was a wide spread rain. We got about an inch and a half so the crops are now off to a good start. But boy did it get cold last night---down to 37 degrees. The sun is shining now but will only get to 55 degrees.
Anngie---I don't know if you will see this but have a great trip and a safe one.
Karen----Oh man, so glad you didn't hit the car but I would have been shaking all the way home too. Glad you are safe, those things happen so fast. I would still call your DBIL brother-in-law, he still is your DD's uncle. Sounds like we are to expect the same weather as you with a warm up next week. It does sound like rain tomorrow here though. I hope to get some planting done today but not sure how my day will unfold for sure. I need to do some cleaning as my sisters and DBIL are coming tonight.

Karen - he is still your bil. The garden is tired because the nutrients have been depleted so the compost should help refresh. We decided on Door County. That way if the weather is nice there are plenty of parks and outdoorsy things, but if the weather is bad we can do a wine tasting or a museum in Sturgeon Bay. I was looking for a place in Sturgeon bay but I found a rental condo in Egg Harbor that looks nice or Glidden Lodge on the Lake Michigan side which I like because the unit is a patio walk out to the beach. I'll have dh decide and then reserve it tonight hopefully. He's being a bit wishy washy about making the decision. As for the garden, it is my project so dh won't help. That's fine, he tends to micromanage (and he likes to use chemicals to kill weeds) and I like things done my way organically without so much precision and thought put into it. DD was doing fine until last night when she seemed to have a meltdown over being overwhelmed by her 4 week neurobiology class. OMG so happy you avoided that accident. I'm sure you were quite shaken up by that. Was it Woodmans?
Gardening. I discovered the meditative quality of weeding last year when I put my garden back in. I would go out every morning and pull weeds and it was definitely therapeutic. Like sewing. And I love picking fresh veggies and eating them. Green beans off the vines are amazing (last year I think i got 6 but most years in the past I've gotten a ton). DH loves to snack on the cherry tomatoes (which are easy to grow in a patio pot) and cucumbers.
At Fleet Farm the other night in the store I'd say it was probably half employees were wearing masks and most customers were not. My dh didn't wear one but I did. In the outside garden area nobody wore masks.
No weeding this morning - it was 42 and blowy and also from the rain yesterday I figured the ground was too wet so I stayed in and spent that hour before getting ready for work looking for a place to go for our getaway. I expect that we will be leaving work early today, probably by 3, so maybe I'll do some weeding when I get home.

Karen, my DBIL died 17 years ago, and I still consider my DSIL my DSIL. We are very close. We think it is kind of funny that people are surprised that she is still so close to us, which I think is pretty ridiculous. Of course she has not remarried, so maybe things would be different if she had. I did not realize that the drama with DSIL's family had to do with the memorial. You know when you do something like this, that you want to really do, people will question things and want to impose your views on them. As far as your DBIL's stepson, I am sure you are fine to invite him, if he was always included in family events. Is this the DBIL who is the real father of the woman who's name I can't remember?
We are going to have a cooler and rainy weekend here. I have a hair cut appointment tomorrow at noon. I am trying a new place that my DGF went to. My place closed. I did not check with them to see if my person followed them to the new place some of the women opened, but this place is closer to my house. Let's see if he asks me if I want to color my hair, and also if he can do anything different with it, which I am sure is not going to happen. Sunday I am meeting a friend at our local art museum. It is in one of the Gold Coast mansions, and they have 2 exhibits often at one time, one in the downstairs, one in the upstairs. These 2 are Andy Warhol, and The Belle Epoque. Should be nice. We like to try to catch each one when it comes up. It is only about 10 minutes from my house. I think the rest of the weekend will be cleaning, and reading. I am going to try to see Maddie one day, maybe Monday. I will see what DS thinks.
Enjoy the holiday weekend all.

Hi Pinky and Marsha. I took so long to finish my post you both snuck in. But, you reminded me about Karen's near miss. I had something like that a few weeks ago, but it was a younger person running a red light. I think plenty of times though with older people, they are still driving but not seeing that well. Although, sometimes when people turn out of parking lots the visibility is not that great. I think we have all probably had near misses. Although maybe not Pinky because it always seems to me that in farm country there is not as many cars on the road.
Marsha, Door County sounds great to me. My problem is really finding something that my DH can do now after the back surgery. I decided on Cleveland, but now he wants to go to Cincinnati to visit some friends. So, maybe a few day in each, we'll have to decide, and I have to find out if he minds doing the drive to Pittsburgh on his birthday. He likes parties, but I don't see us doing anything at our house around that time to celebrate, and I don't really want to have something out.

Pinky, thanks, yes, those accidents or near misses happen so fast; I used to always tell DH when we were going somewhere to use his horn more, but now that the shoe was on the other foot, with me, it was too fast to even think about blowing my horn at him! All you are thinking about is avoiding that vehicle. I preach defensive driving, but that guy just came out of nowhere. Lol, of course as usual, your weekend is jammed packed! I swear, I do not know how you do it!!! Enjoy having family!!
Marsha, Door county is an excellent choice. It was just on the local news, what with trying to get back to normal after last year, but the big thing now with them is the employee shortage, as along with the Dells, they relied on the kids coming over on visa's from other countries, for summer work, but I guess this year there is a limit to visa's, so that is what is making the shortage so severe in Wisco. Your DH sounds a lot like mine was, with taking something simple and turning it into a great big issue. Yes, it was Woodman's, but the other vehicle was turning left from the other way, most likely to go to Menard's.
Robin, lol, I had to stop and think, my goodness, with so much happening this past year, Tina is so far out of my mind!!! No, Tina's father is what would be the black sheep of the family, it has been at least 20 years since DH and I have had any interaction with him. He was very well hated by DH and DBIL who I am referring to. I think you could go into my FB pictures and find a couple or so pictures of DBIL. His name is Curt. He and DH were very close, and my niece (DBIL daughter), who I ran into a couple months ago, said DBIL is still taking DH death hard. Thanks for reminding me to call my salon!!
Thanks for all your opinions about DBIL. I just was not sure how that works, once DH passed.

41º here too this morning when I got up. Only 50º predicted with more rain forecast. Windy too. Down to 34º tonight and then it warms up again. I listened to The Stolen Daughter while I walked and did laundry along with some cleaning this morning. I'll be glad to get back outdoors again to walk tomorrow.
Karen, glad you avoided an accident. Was he oblivious to it even almost happening? I agree that your DBIL still is your DBIL.
Marsha, a lot of people around here talk about how they love going to Door County. I've never been there myself.
Robin, how is your DH doing now since his back surgery?

Robin - one of the big issues with dh's back is sitting for a long time so long road trips always require stops to stretch his legs. You may want to ask dh about that since you are going on a little bit longer trip (you did say you were driving, right?). My dh has been sedentary for so long that he has no stamina so he always thinks it will be great fun to go somewhere that we can go hiking but he peters out so fast that it ends up being very little activity which for me is frustrating, so I have to think ahead to the reality of what will really happen when we get where we are going. That's why he likes the nice quiet trips. He thinks he wants to go to Chicago but I know he won't want to spend the whole day walking around like dd and I do, then he will want to eat pizza and I will come home 5 pounds heavier!

I had a near miss, too, not long ago. We live off a road that is about 2 miles long. It connects two major roads and has a lot of residential roads that intersect with it. The side roads all have stop signs. The main road doesn't. I was driving home and someone ran the stop sign, completely ignored it and didn't even slow down. I was able to stop but it scared me. I notice a lot of people running stop lights, too.
It seemed cool when I got up this morning. I then noticed the AC was running. DH had lowered the thermostat way down. I guess it was warm when he first got up. We had over an inch of rain and another thunderstorm during the night. Tomorrow is supposed to be sunny and in the 70s so we will go outside with DGS, maybe visit a park.
My dad was not close to one of his brothers. We hardly ever saw him though he did come to my wedding. After he died, I posted my condolences on-line and his son reached out to me. He wondered why we never got together even though they lived only a hour or so away from us. I had no answer, really don't know.
Karen, are you okay with inviting DBIL's stepson? What about Tina and are you in contact with her?

I'm going to be leaving in a bit. Have a good memorial day weekend everyone. I hope to do yard chores if it ever warms up. Still way too cold at lunch to think about that!
