Whether you are regular poster or a lurker, we encourage you to talk with us. We do talk about books, but also about our lives, and Weight Watchers. We are women who are spread around the country, and eventually you will learn you we are, and what books we like to read. Don't be intimidated, just pop in and tell us who you are, and what you are reading now.
This is a thread we had on the WW 50 Year old board, so even though most of us have moved beyond our 50's, I am keeping it here. Some prefer to post on Facebook, but for those who may also like to post on something that resembles our old format, I decided to start this. Although we were brought together by our love of books, and we love to share our ideas about books and authors, our friendship has grown, and we know a lot about each others lives. We are spread across the country, and that adds a bit of interest as well, learning about other people's way of life through the "book" they write on the thread.

Good morning.
Chilly start, but going to 64 today, with every day now for the next week warming up.
Gareth, I hope your weather is somewhat like mine, as the sky is pure blue, and no wind, and we have the hope that it will get warmer every day. I may have to take a drive over to the walking trail today.
Thanks, about the accident, and yes, as soon as I was stopped, I looked fast, at the driver, and that is when I saw it was an elderly man, and he was keeping his eyes straight ahead, not looking at me at all, so I don't know if he even knew what went on, but how could he not??? My goodness! People like that should not be on the roads!
Door County is a tourist destination, just like my beloved Minocqua, and both areas get a lot of Illinois people to clog the streets. Door County has been called the Martha's Vineyard of Wisconsin. Along with that comes the hefty price tag of going there.
Carol, with your near miss accident, I am reminded of what I saw, a couple weekends ago, when walking through a parking lot of a strip mall; I saw a vehicle coming towards me, going very slow, so I stopped walking, to let the car go by, and sure enough, there were 2 teenage girls in it, and both were on their phones, texting. The girl that was driving was so intent on texting, I almost banged on her car and yelled PUT THE PHONE DOWN! So I feel many accidents are most likely because of people on their phones. Which I just do not understand, can't that wait a few minutes??
I am fine with DBIL stepson coming, he has always been a part of the family, I am embarrassed that I totally forgot him. Tina is from the other brother that is the black sheep, which means she will not be invited.
I mailed out all the invitations, Wednesday, and last night, got a message from my nephew who lives in New York, telling me he is in GB! Oh for Pete's sake!!! I know he was in the process of getting a divorce, and they were fighting about the shared custody of their only child, and he was not working, what with his job as manager of stage lighting for a play on Broadway or off Broadway, and he mentioned to my DSIL that passed away in November, when he was home for DH funeral service that he would eventually be moving back to GB, but DBIL, who sent me the message the other night about did I want him to forward the invite to all his kids, I told him I mailed the 2 kids of his an invite, which meant I mailed nephew an invite to his NY address. Why didn't DBIL tell me then, that nephew was back in town? Oh well, an invitation wasted.(and that stupid .70 cent stamp wasted too!!!) Good times, I tell ya......
Otherwise my weekend so far is nice and quiet. I hope you all have a wonderful holiday weekend.

A cool morning at 46 degrees with a high of 57 for the day. Then we may get more rain the middle of the afternoon.
Well the gathering of my sisters and DBIL's didn't go as planned. But my house is clean anyway---gotta love that. My DH ended up with stomach flu yesterday and was really quite sick. Better this morning and he did eat a piece of toast. Instead we gathered at the cemetary my parents are buried at and decorated their graves. Something we do annually----but we always gather at my house, go for dinner and then back at our house for dessert. Sad that my DBIL is progressing in his journey with Alzheimer's. Wondering how much longer he can remain at home and my DSis can take it.
Karen---I love the sound of your weekend nice and quiet. Don't beat yourself up about the invitations----how were you to know that nephew moved if they never said.
Think I will go out to mow before the rain starts. It is hard to keep up with this much grass when it has rained so often---not large amounts of rain but small amounts that keep it growing. I should not complain as our crops need it. Probably some more planting too, as I got the idea I wanted to try a herb garden so I have that to prepare also. That is my plan for the weekend and of course church tomorrow and Memorial Day service Monday morning-----keeping my fingers crossed DH does not share the flu bug with me!!!

Beautiful, sunny day looking out my window. There was frost on rooftops when I got up. It was 34º then. Getting into the 60's later so we'll wait and walk later when it's warmer.
Karen, are you having a sit down meal or buffet for the memorial? Just curious what you decided for a menu.
Pinky, sorry your DH is sick. Hope he doesn't share with you!

Pinky, aw, I feel bad for you all. Hope your DH gets better, maybe by tomorrow he will be just fine. Good luck with the herb garden, I think that would be interesting to do that kind of garden.
Gareth, it is a buffet dinner, which of course is a buffet, which just recently supper clubs and restaurants around here have started again, but the room will be set up as a sit down dinner, with the round tables and 6 chairs to the tables, which they are doing, so there is a bit of space between each chair. So you will go to the buffet table, get your food and go sit down to eat. The menu is chicken and ham, with all the sides. I am providing the cake, which they will slice up.

We are having rain here today again, but it should stop mid-afternoon. I don't think it will get higher than the low 50's.
Karen, was it 70 cents total for the mailing, or an extra 70? Invitations often are more than the usual. What did DN end up working out about his child, or do you not know yet? That has to be hard because it is quite expensive to live in NY. He could probably have gotten a job somewhere in a restaurant now, and Broadway will open in September, so maybe he will move back.
Pinky, so sorry to hear about your DBIL, that is such a difficult disease. Does she have help in the house with him? That is the worst part I think, the fact that you get to the point where they can't be left alone. Sometimes people also get very mean, so maybe that is even harder. Sorry your DH got sick and plans had to change.
Gareth, glad you look like you will end up with a nice day today, although certainly much colder than we expect for Memorial Day weekend. Our weekend here looks like it will be a total wash-out. The Hamptons and Fire Island season goes from Memorial Day through Labor Day, so usually people are out at the beaches.
DH is complaining about his back, of course because of the rain. I will be quite annoyed if he decides we shouldn't go out for dinner. I am hoping as it dries out later it will feel better. I am sure the cold isn't helping either. I am leaving in a few minutes for my hair cut. I should do some cleaning when I get back, and maybe laundry. I would like to be straightened up a bit in case DS decides they will come out Monday with Maddie.

Good morning. Started the day a bit chilly, but warming already, at 46. 68 once again expected for the high. Looks like rain tomorrow. Please note that I added tomorrow on to the dates that this thread will cover. I forgot, yesterday when setting up the weekend thread, to include it, hope you all do not mind; it just makes sense, as there will probably be just a few on here, or maybe just me, lol. Pinky, how is your DH this morning? I sure hope he was able to fight whatever that was, off. Maybe it was just a 24 hour bug. I have a DD that was famous for that during grade school days. I love your tradition with family and the cemetery. How long have your parents been gone? I am curious, as when I go to the cemetery, I notice a lot of the head stones really needing a good cleaning, and feel so bad for whoever is buried there. I always wonder about their story. And am tempted to clean it for them. Ours and DB's is of course still clean, what with being so new. Did you get your mowing done? Gareth, how did it go yesterday; were you able to get an outdoor walk in? It stayed pretty chilly here all day, but was able to open the patio door a little, to get some fresh air in. I mentioned about the menu yesterday. I get a kick out of watching Wyseguy (His name is Kaleb) on FB watch, doing all his different landscaping and of course complaining about the winds they always have. Of course where he lives in really rural, on a lot of land, so that is to be expected. He bought his grandparents house and land; it is in southeast Iowa. Is Iowa so windy because it is so open? Robin, you definitely have our weather. But be forewarned that we are expecting high 80's to possible 90 by Friday or Saturday. Why can't we just have 78 and sunny every day? The cost of the stamps was a total of .70 cents per envelope. And I see they are talking about raising the price of stamps to .58 cents, so I am glad I mailed those out when I did. None of us here in Wisconsin have heard how that custody case turned out for DN. My DD2 and I were shocked to hear that he was even thinking about moving back here, what with him being so close to his DD. I have to believe he does not have any kind of shared custody, if he is back here. And, it is a shame he did not stick it out for awhile, as I too have been hearing how Broadway is opening up, soon. I think there is a lot to this drama that we have not heard about. DN seems to think that him and I have gotten closer than what I think, so maybe he will fill me in soon. When you mentioned to Pinky about patient's getting mean, that reminded me of my DF. He did not get mean (as far as I know!), but he got nasty. He turned prejudiced, which shocked me, as I never heard a racist comment from him, as far as I can remember. My DB would take him out for lunch at various restaurant's, but I told DB I would not take DF out anywhere, with the way he was talking, what with worrying about what he would say to people. My DB just laughed and said he thought it was funny. (insert eye roll here!) This was back around 2011, could you imagine if it was in these tense times? It was so sad to hear him talking like that. Sorry your DH is suffering, does he have any pain pills or a heating pad to help? How did your hair cut turn out? Was this the appointment with the other stylist? I am thinking of calling Mary Kay to see if I can get someone to do my make up on July 17th, since I am not good with it. Then of course I need to get to the hair salon, but that will work out just fine. I see the people across our little parking lot moved out yesterday. I am positive the landlord told me the other day that they were moving June 30th. Kind of funny, but I mentioned to the landlord that I was thinking about taking that apartment when I saw it was available, and he said, no, Karen, you would not want to move in there. (  ? Hmmm.) Also, he was telling me that they (the management company) had a hard time with them, and were trying to evict them, but the guy kept pulling all the strings you imagine, what with being a person of color, and is one of those kind of people that feel we all owe them. He was screaming racist, and all that, so the landlord was contacting all kinds of government offices, and was told the same thing; that couple could be evicted. This guy wouldn't even let the landlord bring people in to show the apartment, he said what with Covid, that is not allowed!! Of course that is not true. Drama wherever I go! Then I saw a fire truck pull in here. What the heck?? Seems they were going around to all the buildings, as each building has attached to it on one side, a small little building, that has all the electrical, and the furnace, and I think cable stuff in it. They must do some kind of inspections on these newer apartments. I have a new live video to watch in the evening, when I am bored. It is Barney the cockatoo. That bird is just a hoot, and so smart! Yeah, I really need to get a life, I know. At least there is racing on just about all day, with the Indy 500, then NASCAR tonight, which I normally don't watch sports in the evening, but I may turn on the bedroom TV and at least have it on in the background. Also need to go collect all my mail, then take most of it with all the garbage over to the dumpster. Rough life, huh? Have a nice day everyone. |

Karen, it isn't always windy here. Just seems like it though sometimes. Yes, we got our walk in yesterday. We waited until late morning when it had warmed up a little. It ended up bering a really nice day. Sounds like that apartment probably wasn't taken good care of was why he saying that. Why did you think you wanted it? Smaller?
I tripped over uneven concrete on our walk yesterday and fell. Glad no one was around. Usually when anything like that happens I have an audience. I had one heckuva time getting back up even with DH's help so it would've been embarrassing. Of course someone could've been watching from a window, oh well. My hand is really sore and swollen where I fell more on my left side along with my knee. At least I didn't break a bone. Glad too since I'm right handed it was my left. I try and be so careful and look where I'm walking so I don't know what more I can do.
It's going to be an even nicer day today. Every day is getting warmer. 80's by end of the week. We'll walk later morning. Hopefully I can stay upright today!

Gareth, be careful after that fall. If it doesn't feel much better soon, go to the doctor for X-rays. I didn't think anything was bad when I fractured my kneecap. I would have never thought that. And your wrist too, you just never know.
Karen, we get discounted rates on stamps because we pay a monthly fee to Stamps.com, so I am not sure what the current price is. Then 70 cents total isn't that much extra really. Some wedding invitations I know too 2 stamps. Around here, a sit down dinner is when you get served by waiters, not when you go up and get your own food. I can't imagine having a buffet with no real tables. Which reminds me, I said I would call a place that we used for our 40th and 45th high school reunion to see what they have available for next year. I hope you do hear from you DN soon about what was going on. In a million years I can't imagine my DS giving up Maddie. He is so amazing with her. Sometimes when he is working from home during the day he takes her out for lunch, just the 2 of them, when DDIL is in her office, which is going to be much more often starting in July.
We had a very nice evening out last night for dinner. Was it perfect, definitely not, was it so enjoyable, yes. Food was great, service was so-so. They are not able to get enough help, I think that is an all around problem. We ate in the bar restaurant of a fancy hotel around here. That was what I could get at the last minute that wasn't Italian, or one of the places we've been to a number of times before, at the time we wanted to go, so all was good, and they had TV's on to watch the baseball and Hockey games. The Islanders made the 2nd round of the hockey play-offs. Funny, they are playing the Boston Bruins, and the Knicks are play the Boston Celtics, both DDIL's hometown teams. I am reading Sooly, and enjoying it.

Here's a question for all of you, because I don't think any of you live somewhere like I do. A woman on one of our local Facebook pages was mad at a store. She dropped her 13 year old daughter off at a clothing boutique with a friend, and a Gift Card her DD had received. Her DD bought a skirt for $200, and when she was still in the store she called her mother, and the mother was mad because the store refused to give her a refund to the card, they said it was store policy. I said that these kids learn from a very young age that they spend a lot of money on things. You can't expect a girl who's mother uses a $2000 purse to think twice about that skirt. I made a remark that if they wanted to raise their child differently they should move to Iowa (sorry Gareth), and their child will shop at Walmart and Kohl's. Not that there is anything wrong with that as we all know that I shop at Kohl's. Do any of you know 13 year olds who would even think of buying a $200 skirt?

We had a great time with DGS, DD and DSIL. DSIL smoked some pork and we had pulled pork sandwiches which were great. That was for dinner. We went out for lunch which was only the 3rd time we had been in a restaurant since the virus started. DGS is talking more and we can have real conversations with him. He is pretty much potty trained. DD said they were doing the Walmart, Target, Costco, Kohl's bathroom tours now. Every time they go out DGS has to go so they are finding where the bathrooms are in every business. We played, read books, colored and I don't what else, but it was fun.
One of DS's friends was living in Washington. He got divorced but stayed there because of his kids. He reconnected with a woman he went to high school with here in Texas and so he has moved back. I can't imagine being that far from my kids. Of course, now with facetime he can see them, not just talk to them.
Pinky, hope your DH is bettr.
It was only 57 when I got up this morning. Church building was very cold. I guess they didn't check the weather forecast.

Happy Memorial Day. Thank you to all the veterans who fought for us, and sacrificed for us. For that we have our freedom.
Good morning.
Warmer in the AM than it has been, it is 55, with a high of 73 expected, along with storms later. I just saw the extended forecast, with next weekend 90 expected, and a week from today, 91! Most likely those temps will change over time, but a shock to see anyway.
Gareth, I'm sure it isn't always windy where you are, I had just mentioned about Kaleb, who lives in southeast Iowa saying where he is, out in the rural area, it is always windy there.
Oh my! So sorry to hear you fell!! At our age that is scary, for the fact of what can happen afterwards, so keep a keen eye on your internal system, as I have heard of people falling, then a blood clot moving up to cause a stroke. We don't want anything to happen to you! But what happened to you, is something that would be normal for me, what with chemo ruining my sense of balance, I am sometimes glad I walk more in the apartment than outside.
About the apartment, the one across from me is a lower, and just a 1 stall garage, so the rent is around $100 cheaper than mine. So for about 3 days I was really giving it a lot of thought, but the thing that decided it for me, was, a couple things, first, new people moved to the upper right over that apartment a few months ago, and it is a variety of young people, that always go out to their patio to smoke, and there is 2 little kids there, like around 2 years old. Then, the 2 bedroom windows are on the side of the building that are right next to the road that cuts through the complex. So as usual, my apartment is so much more private in so many ways, that the money part of it didn't matter enough to get me to move.
How are you feeling this morning? In the times that I fell, I felt it the next day, quite a bit!
Robin, that is why I wanted to take the whole bunch of invites right to the post office, as I was not sure if they would require more than 1 stamp. You never know, with the post office. And come to find out, the cost was higher.
Don't you have buffet's around your area? Here it is normal to have buffet's, but then you also have the waitress's that get you your drinks, and clear off the plates as you empty them. Buffet luncheons are the norm for right after funeral's, but since last October was when the virus was really getting worse, any kind of bigger gathering's were highly discouraged, so I made an announcement at the service that I would be having the luncheon most likely in the spring; at that time, the higher up's were projecting the spring would be when we could get back to normal. As for the tables, I don't know what you meant, do you think there won't be tables? As I said, the room will be set up as it normally is for an event, the only difference will be that there will just be setting's for 6, instead of 8.
About my DN, both my DD2 and I could not figure out how he was going to be able to just up and leave NY, as we all know how close he is to his DD. Just how you describe your DS with his DD (which is just precious!!) So I am waiting for some kind of response from him.
Looks like our new normal will be expecting so so service, in the restaurant industry for quite awhile, since all those places are really suffering. Unbelievable how that industry changed so much in a years time.
Of course I would flip if I heard one of my DGD's paid $200 for a skirt! Of course with how my DD1 has turned out so different with her money, anything could be possible with her daughters!!!!
Carol, glad you had a great time with family! Isn't it wonderful, how the babies change so much, so fast, that you can now talk to him? This is when every time you see him, he will be growing by leaps and bounds, but I am sure you know that.
I can understand, in a way, how people get divorced and end up moving away, because of love and marriage to a second person. But DN moving back home, when NY was getting so close to reopening, is just strange. I know he loved his job, as in the past we have heard of him touring with a company, for a production some where, once he even went to Italy with a company. But that was for a limited time, then he would come back to NY.
I hope you had a sweater for church! That has happened to us, in the past, at the church we used to go to.
DD2 called and invited me to their house for a BBQ dinner today. As I am deeply into my WW program, this will be very hard to do. She mentioned chicken, along with ribs, so I think I may be safe, with the chicken, just will peel the skin away. Weather guys are saying we could get strong to severe storms later today, so if that comes up before I leave, I will cancel. When she first invited me, she said that DSIL mom and step father will be there. I really like them, but with all the drama DD told me about, a week ago, her DMIL was part of the drama, so I told her I was not going to come, as I am so done with all the drama, so no thank you. She called me back after she told her DH what I said; he said that he assures me that there will be nothing said, about the memorial and all the drama in his family, concerning it. So I will go, as I know DSIL wants me to come, but I am still worried. Keeping my fingers crossed!! This is my life, I am the only one that can take care of me, so I have had it with all the stupid drama, it does nothing but cause stress, and stress is something I do not need.
Need to run to the grocery store this morning, for my usual run on Monday, plus see what I can scare up at the bakery depart, to bring for a small dessert. Then some walking, before I go to DD's.

Karen, I just said that about buffet because here, there are 2 kinds of events, either a buffet, or a sit down dinner. A sit down dinner is when they give you a few choices, and waiters come around and serve the table like in a regular restaurant. A buffet is when you make your own plate and then sit down at a table. Most of the time when there are a lot of people the tables are assigned. I have heard here that some of the buffet restaurants are starting to open again. Not really buffet restaurants, but more often it is a brunch buffet that is very elaborate. There are some Chinese buffets. I think they have also started reopening the restaurants that serve dim sum, which are Chinese appetizers that they bring around to tables and you choose an assortment of small plates of food. We love those, and do it sometimes as a special treat.
The rain has stopped here, but it looks cloudy. I am off soon to go to Bed Bath and Beyond, then a little more food shopping. I went Saturday morning but mainly because they had the flavored seltzer I like on sale, and to get something for our lunch. DH went out early today to get something at Home Depot, and had breakfast out. Fine with me! Not sure what dinner will be. I have 2 very small filet mignons I bought from Imperfect Foods, and I see there was one strip steak, so I might make both, and we can share the strip, or whatever. I didn't buy anything for dinners this week, so must do that.

Karen, thanks for asking. I'm feeling fine. The top of my hand is quite puffy and a little sore. More so when using my hand. Bruising and red around my knee but that really isn't that sore. You could always leave if there's any drama at DD's. Will your other DD be there too?
DH went with me to WM first thing this morning. First he's been there in well over a year. Nice having him along today with my hand to load and unload groceries. He's always so much help putting everything away too.
We're making plans Wed to see our friend that's under hospice care. They live 100 miles away so it'll be a long, emotionally draining day. We've been putting it off since he's had so many family and friends visiting that really exhausts him. Now that he's asking for us we'll go now. I don't think it can be put off for much longer. He's declining so fast. Just hate seeing him like that but we really need to see him one last time.
Beautiful day. It's warming up again more every day. 80's by weekend. We're planning on walking later this morning. We'll probably get another walk in later this afternoon too like we did yesterday.

Remembering those that fought for us to have freedom today. Thankful and Blessed! Also remembering our loved ones that have gone on before us, We were to the cemetery for the Memorial Day service and it is always so touching. When they read the roll call and play taps it is always so emotional to me. DGKS are getting older and are asking so many questions----WHO-WHAT WHY? ? I love the opportunity to share with them this information. The cemetery is 1/4 mile north of us and it is also right across DS#2's family farm. They have a long driveway and all enclosed in trees. This is the big town cemetery so many people buried there. A beautiful day to remember. Karen---We are supposed to be in the 90's next weekend too and I am sure I will be complaining because I am too hot----temps never right for me, well at least I admit it. Hope your BBQ goes well---sounds like fun. Nice of your DSIL and DD to include you. To answer you ? from yesterday----DH is better, already felt better yesterday and I am keeping my fingers crossed that he didn't share with me. I think I would have gotten it by now if he had. Also my DF passed away in 1986 and my DM in 1991. Hard to believe it has been 35 and 30 years since they have been gone. Gareth----so sorry about the fall but glad you were not hurt worse than you were. Those things just happen so dang fast. Good that you have a visit planned to see your friend---so hard but it is a good thing to do. Carol---DH is feeling much better---thanks for asking. Glad you enjoyed your time with family and especially DGS. Robin---glad you enjoyed dinner out the other night. I always say it doesn't matter that it is fancy and the food is just okay(good is an added bonus) as long as you are with friends or family or that you have a great visit. Also I think the 13 year old daughter has a lot to learn if she is paying $200 for a skirt. She sounds spoiled if you ask me and I think the DM has issues too allowing it to happen in the first place----thats just my thoughts however and I know I live in a completely different world (well almost) than you do.
