I get a kick out of all the fear and loathing over immigrants entering the US. Are you absolutely sure your relatives came here legally?
Many immigrants work at jobs home grown Americans would never, ever do. And yet many legal Americans hire these immigrants and pay them for their labor.
We don't want them all here. We only want the ones who make our lives easier and happier.

birdgal, you're so right. I was born and raised in the Rio Grande Valley, on the Texas/Mexico border. Half the kids in my school were migrant workers kids that were here illegally. There was nothing "different" about them, they were just the same as the rest of the "legals". We had a cook/housekeeper that would come in once a week and was paid cash. She was supporting her family in Mexico. She also made the best corn tortillas My husband has worked with "illegals" that have fake social security numbers, they pay taxes but don't get refunds. They stay out of trouble because they don't want to be deported. 9 times out of 10, those are the kinds of "illegals" that are here in the USA. All this fear mongering by the far right is just another way of ethnic cleansing, gotta get that "good old white boys" club, you know.

Our economy would grind to a halt here in California without the workers from south of the border, however they have gotten here. Hey, rest of country, want to see your food prices sky rocket even more? Kick out the migrant workers. Also, yard work, construction, you name it. All heavily reliant on workers who come from Mexico and Central America.

In our towns/cities there are designated areas for day laborer pick up, and sometimes they are marked with a sign.

areas for day laborer pick up We have plenty of these. I don't think any are designated. They mostly hang out on the corner at the big shopping centers. Everyone who would want to hire someone knows where to find these folks. Also a lot of migrants who work for commercial companies here are paid a very low wage. Many people here make side deals with the workers to do jobs around the house for a larger payment.

Fareed Zakaria has a special today, The State of America. I have only watched the first little bit, but I am sure the whole thing will be a thoughtful, worthwhile hour. It will be broadcast again, I'm sure and probably available On Demand. On CNN, BTW. His first two guests were a couple of Pulitzer prize winning historians. They both compared the current political climate to the 1850s in that a portion of the populace were ready to leave the country when they didn't get what they wanted - in that case slavery. In this case, losing an election. The way the Republicans are attempting to trash fair elections is the modern day equivalency, I guess. This is a point of view that has not occured to me, but it seems legit. Another interesting article in The Economist posits that partisan election administration is a much greater threat to American democracy than even voter suppression. Republican run states are trying to limit the independence of elections officers. In Arizona a state rep introduced a law letting the legislature overturn the results of a presidential election. Similar stuff is going on in Georgia and Texas. IMO these states will throw out just enough votes for Democrats to give the victory to the Republican candidate. I am becoming very pessimistic. ETA: I finished watching the Fareed thing and the only parts that I would consider mandatory are his First Take and the two first historians.

There are a few states I wouldn't miss at all if they wanted to secede.

I got an LOL about this: Cruises are now back in Galveston! The cruise lines are requiring masks for unvaccinated passengers. Gov Abbott threw a fit and said he's ban the cruise line. Galveston hit back because they've really been financially hurt by the cruises not working all this time, so Abbott relented and said that wasn't what he meant.. (yeah right).

However, DeSantis in Florida was able to get a lot of restrictions on cruise lines lifted, like requiring proof of vaccination and allowing children to cruise. I don't know about mask mandates.

Cruises are businesses and should have the right to make their own "dress codes" without the government stepping in, you know?

I wasn't posting about what DeSantis did because I agree with him, only pointing out that there are other ways than throwing a fit and pouting to get things done.
I wouldn't take a cruise out of Texas or Florida. Actually I don't think I'd take another ocean cruise at all.
