birdgal, but I made it negative by calling it a "toxic team"!

You did. It's true. I seemed to have focused on the team word instead of toxic. Toxic is the perfect word for them!

Not really either political or progressive, but did any of you see the men's 400 meter freestyle final? The swimmer who won is from Tunisia and he came into the race with the slowest qualifying time. It was incredible!

It was incredible! Yes. I have really enjoyed this Olympics and am glad they were not cancelled, covid not withstanding. The lack of spectators has not detracted one iota for me, if anything it seems a more intense experience.

She is 17 and there is only one 50 meter pool in the entire state of Alaska. And I believe she practiced in an even smaller pool. The watch party in Alaska was jumping up and down going crazy. I got a kick out of Titmus's swimming coach (Australia) when she beat Ledecky in a heat. He went bananas! This was earlier. Too bad about Simone Biles. Anyone watching the hearing on Jan. 6th? DH has it on now.

This thread is so upbeat I'm really enjoying it. People cheering on other people to succeed, to be a winner. It's the opposite of politics and it is one Hell of a welcome and refreshing thing to read.
GO TEAM! From every country!

A lot of chatter says Biles just couldn't handle her poor (for her) performance so far and had a mental block from it, not a physical injury. I was actually talking to Ron about that the other day, she's so used to being the absolute best, what happens when she's not? Also:

I was actually talking to Ron about that the other day, she's so used to being the absolute best, what happens when she's not? Also: I've read bits and pieces of the Simone Biles decision to not participate in the team event. Part of the reason she said was that she didn't want to bring her team down with her performance. Hopefully she will compete in the individual events, as her performance will only affect her. I saw a small part of an interview she gave and she mentioned this is the first competition she's ever been in where her parents have been in attendance. It must be hard for many of these athletes not to have that level of support with them. I wish her, and the team, the best.

And then I saw a post from some idiot saying they were all coached and it didn't happen.

I don't think we will ever get rid of stupid either. Stupid has always been here, but even stupid was smart enough not to brag about it.
Trump made stupid popular.

It's such a strange combination of a paranoid, ignorant voting block, and a cynical party that will say and do anything to keep them riled up and voting so they can stay in power. It is disgusting for sure.
I don't believe for a minute that, aside from a few legit wackos (think MTG), the majority of these GOPers believe what they are spouting.
