Today I take credit for getting to a Weight Watchers in-person meeting this week, tracking, weighing and measuring, keeping the right foods in the house, exercising, and meditating. Also, credit for doing well on my yearly blood tests which is what motivates me to keep maintaining. My gratitude is that I got my act together to lose 80 pounds and kept my act together to maintain the loss for over 13 years.

Credit for exercising 3/7 days. Credit for staying aware of hunger and satiation levels and eating accordingly at least some of the time.

When you got to goal were you scared of maintenance, or have you developed a fear of maintenance?

I've lost weight three times on WW. The first two times I gained the weight back. I'm maintaining this time. For years I didn't go back to WW because I didn't think I could maintain and then health problems came up and I felt I had to learn how to maintain my weight loss (knew I could lose the weight, it was maintaining that was the problem). I was on fire when I was losing weight and when I started maintaining. I wasn't scared of maintenance just knew I had to it because the laws of the physical world weren't going to change and the way they were written if I was overweight or obese I had health problems. It was matter of modifying my behavior. I set up a support network, besides online support groups I still go to WW meetings, and I worked on changing my short-circuited thinking which gave me permission to overeat. I've learned to recognize when I give myself permission to go off plan and often can talk back and stay on plan. Sometimes I miss the fire I had in the early years.

I was scared when I got to goal this time. I'd been losing and gaining for almost 40 years. I joined and left WW too many times to count. I got to goal 3 times before this time. I did know when I rejoined this time that I had to do something differently in order to maintain. I wasn't quite sure what that was. I got so much great advice from people on the WW message boards, and I was able to change my thinking and behavior so that I've been able to maintain.
I'm still somewhat scared of maintenance though. After 10 1/2 years of doing it, I can't say that I feel confident in my ability to keep it up. Every day requires thought, effort and practice.

What factors in your environment encourage weight management, and what factors discourage weight management?

One factor that encourages my maintenance is from the beginning I have kept sweets out of the house. If I really want something I have to go out to get it and for whatever reason I just don't do that. Thankfully I don't get tempted too often while grocery shopping. I also keep the right foods in the house. As for discouraging my weight maintenance, my husband is a bit of a food pusher and I don't always resist.

Do you eat food out of a container instead of making a serving and putting it in a dish, such as with a carton of ice cream, bag of cookies, or a bag of potato chips?

I usually put a serving on a plate, or in a dish and eat it at the table. One exception is the last serving in my quart container of yogurt. I eat that out of the container sitting down at a table.

Environment - I keep sugary, fatty treats out of my house or stored away in a basement freezer. I'm very tempted by these things when I'm in a store or a restaurant and have to work hard to avoid them.
Eating out of the container - I do this mostly only when I'm down to the last portion. I also do this when I'm eating a huge bag of chips in my car because I've bought it on impulse in the store and I won't bring it into my house. I don't buy containers of ice cream because I don't keep that in my house and I can't eat it in the car.
