Not that I don't like to celebrate a holiday, but why do we have to celebrate by making loud and louder noise that frightens pets, wildlife, some senior citizens as well as some children?
Or, have I become the grumpy old woman who lived next door when I was a child?

Our town has always had an annual fireworks show less than a mile away from my house. Probably closer than that, because everyone and their family would park on our side street and walk down to see it. Then come back and all try to leave at once. Our neighbor who is a police officer comes out and directs traffic otherwise there would be fisticuffs. No really, but people do get testy.
Oh joy, the event has been cancelled two years in a row. Also, only ONE firework was set off by private citizens. The fire danger is high here and will keep growing until the rains come. Folks have wised up.
Call me grumpy too. Stesses the pet population out.

Lani, it sure does stress out and frighten our pets, the wildlife, young children and grownups.
Humans seem to love noise. The louder the better. I hate seeing my cats as well as the wildlife, with fear on their beautiful faces.
Humans are a noisy bunch. Rude crude, and indifferent. This is how we celebrate? By making a racket and disturbing the peace?
I don't get it. But, what do I know? I'm just a grumpy old woman. A GOW! Hey, we should start a club. GOW's and wise young women sick and tired of all the noise...unite! Lol.

I'm 67 so can't claim youth any more. At least my cat doesn't turn a hair at outside noise. Now if someone comes to the door, he's down to the basement like a shot. How about Grumpy Lovely Old Ladies? Then we can GLOW . Or Grumpy Literate Old Ladies. I think I like that one better.

birdgal - I agree with you. It has sounded like a war zone around my neighborhood for the last week! And ironically, all fireworks are illegal in my county

cj59, They are illegal where I live too but they were being shot off a few days before the 4th, on the 4th, and a day after the 4th.

I still like fireworks, I think. I haven't gone to see a fireworks show in years. When she was little our younger daughter didn't care for them at all. She would bury her head in my lap.
Fireworks were banned in our county. We only heard a few being set off, and that was the night of the 4th. There was a fireworks show held at the mall, but those weren't the ones we heard.

The city cancelled their fireworks show because of the crowds and COVID. They usually hold it at one of our beaches and people pack in.

They are illegal in my state too but that has never stopped people from getting them.
Towns and corporations get permits and do put on a spectacular show. I could do without the noise though.

It seems that even though we only heard one set of illegal fireworks going off, there were many more. And even though there was a ban, nothing was done, even if people reported it. Pretty disgusting.

Not fireworks, but our neighbor across the street had a super loud truck, and he went to work at 5am and revved the engine for 5 minutes every morning. I'm guessing the police finally got tired of the complaints because he came home 1 day and the truck was not loud anymore lol. If you want to do that crap, live in the country away from other people.

luanne, We had an article in our local paper about how many fireworks complaints the police got along with an explanation of why there were no arrests.

Not enough room in the jail?
Wouldn't it be easier and profitable to just make them legal?
Why are they illegal anyway? Anybody know?
