Day 22 – Say, Oh, Well, to Disappointment
Beck talks about times when this process might seem disappointing such as when you don’t see the weight you want on the scale, when you can’t eat what everyone else is eating, when the disadvantages outweigh the advantages. She tells us that when this happens we need to remember we choose to diet and with that choice we have another choice: to make ourselves miserable by complaining or to accept that dieting does come with disadvantages but they are “a necessary means to an end.” You might not like dieting, but it is the actuality of what you have to do to reach goal.
Beck tells the story about how her son handled going on a restrictive diet for health reasons. His attitude was to say: oh, well, and move on. She suggests that we use the phase when confronted with sabotaging thoughts lamenting the problems we see with dieting.
Examples she gives:
I want that doughnut. Oh, well.
I really feel hungry. Oh, well.
I wish I could order a hamburger instead of a salad. Oh, well.
Those chips look so good. Oh, well.
I don’t feel like exercising today. Oh, well.
I don’t feel like writing down my food plan for tomorrow. Oh, well.
What disappointments have you run into while losing weight/maintaining your goal weight?
How did you handle the disappointments?

I face a lot of disappointment when I can't eat what I might want. Sometimes I give in, but other times I stay on plan. Needed to hear the example about exercising anyway when you don't want to. Need to stop giving in and start to go ahead and do things I don't want to do.

What disappointments have you run into while losing weight/maintaining your goal weight? * I've faced many disappointments when losing my weight to goal but the most recent was bringing in the celebration cake to my house and eating 3/4 of the cake in one day that was meant to be for three days and when cleaning the freezer eating part of a raspberry bar before downing the cake. How did you handle the disappointments? * I was disappointed in myself because I fear gaining my weight back, this is exactly how weight gain happened in the past, the eating of unplanned sugar food. The next day I got right back on plan with journaled food. I am going to make up a bright colored response card to carry in my purse to deal with this at the store as suggested by bbbearsmom and surfgirl, I like the idea! I also need to start doing things that I don't want to do like: * Work in my gardens. * Ride my bike. * Clean out things for a garage sale. * Stop sitting so much.

Move on and just remember that it wasn't worth the calories or points! I give you permission to let go! xo
As for me, it is what it is. I wish I was a thin person who could 'eat whatever they want' and never gain weight, but I'm just not. So I need to be mindful if I want to lose and keep it off. That's reality, I can choose to accept reality or fight against it, but fighting against it still won't give me a metabolism that burns fat at a high volume so whats the point? Accept it and move forward, I say.
One thing I don't get is why Beck says "Oh Well" to writing down a food plan. That seems counter to what she teaches!

What disappointments have you run into while losing weight/maintaining your goal weight? * I am not losing as quickly as I did last time I worked my way to goal weight * The scale is SLOW * The scale goes up even when I am OP * I can't find ingredients to make favorite foods I used to have when on WW in the past * Clothing options are becoming more limited as I lose weight (and haven't been shopping)
How did you handle the disappointments? * I move on...just keep plugging away and make the best of it. If there isn't an ingredient I look for an alternative, if the piece of clothing doesn't fit and can't be made to "work" it goes in the giveaway suitcase, if the scale is acting up and I am OP I look to see the weight trend over the past and take that into account then check a year ago compared to today and am thankful. It is not "oh well" but perhaps a version of it? Perhaps a more constructive version of it?

surfgirl, "I don’t feel like writing down my food plan for tomorrow. Oh, well." I think she means that even though you don't want to write down the food plan, you say "Oh, well." and do it anyway.

surfgirl Thanks for your reply.😊 I don't think saying, Oh, Well, is going to address this sugar addiction I learned in childhood. It's one of the reasons I've gained my weight back in past years. I really don't agree with Beck on this one to say, Oh Well, then move on. I find the beauty of this BBR review gives me an opportunity to express my frustration here, write about it, get your opinions and then move on. I've had a lot of stress especially yesterday, as many of you know, it was a year ago I lost my husband, it was a very difficult day. I'm beginning to understand the stresses I have in my life are what fuel this unplanned sugar food eating, so if I babble on please understand and continue to give me your opinions!🤗 cathygehaDo you have a new beautiful avatar?

I really wanted to share this after reading comments today. I have never met a thin person who can eat whatever they want. All the thin people I know practice good healthy eating habits. I do believe the difference in me and a lot of them - there are some things they can have one of occasionally - I struggle as some things set off the trigger for more just for me. Marie

MarieL, Also when people say something like thin people can eat what they want, the speaker is thinking that the thin person wants to eat like the speaker wants to eat (overeat). The thin person might not want to eat what the speaker wants to eat, and might not want to overeat. So, yes the thin person can eat what they want but what they want to eat keeps them on plan. I like to say I want to eat the right mix of food for good nutrition, and the right amount of food to maintain my goal weight. Having said all that I do want to overeat at times but I don't get away with it so I work on not doing it.

I do believe the difference in me and a lot of them - there are some things they can have one of occasionally - I struggle as some things set off the trigger for more just for me. Marie Yup! I always share this story but years ago I was at lunch with a friend at the time who worked out a lot, was extremely fit and sort of obsessed with her body and such. We would go to this burger place and order their lunch salads which were quite filling. She would always hold the shredded cheese (there wasn't even a 1/4 cup on the entire salad) and would sub beans, and ask for low cal dressing on the side, which she would dip her fork into, then into the salad. One day I said to her, "Just get the cheese, you earned it and you look great!" To which she replied, "I look this way because I do these things all the time."
To me it was a bit extreme, but for her it worked and I'm sure there were folks looking at her and wishing they could eat whatever they wanted like she did, but they didn't realize how regimented she was.

It is from a photo taken earlier this year...think it was the day I went for either the first or second Pfizer covid-19 vaccination. Decided to spiff up my image in hopes the weight loss might also show...a bit. Thanks for commenting
