Whether you are regular poster or a lurker, we encourage you to talk with us. We do talk about books, but also about our lives, and Weight Watchers. We are women who are spread around the country, and eventually you will learn you we are, and what books we like to read. Don't be intimidated, just pop in and tell us who you are, and what you are reading now.
This is a thread we had on the WW 50 Year old board, so even though most of us have moved beyond our 50's, I am keeping it here. Some prefer to post on Facebook, but for those who may also like to post on something that resembles our old format, I decided to start this. Although we were brought together by our love of books, and we love to share our ideas about books and authors, our friendship has grown, and we know a lot about each others lives. We are spread across the country, and that adds a bit of interest as well, learning about other people's way of life through the "book" they write on the thread.

Good morning. Raining, humid and very warm at 78 early in the day. Rain will leave by afternoon and humid and hot will stay.
Robin, I think with my DS, since she is 6 yrs older than I, she thinks she needs to boss me around, and she does not want me to be like my DD, which she had that man friend so soon after her DH passed. It disappoints me that she is acting like that, as she has not even met my friend yet, she has seen a picture of him, and I have told her they would meet him as soon as he can get up here, after he is done with the job in Ireland. There is a lot more I could tell you, but not on this public thread. If I get a chance when I am done posting on here, I will add to the PM on this site. Is your state debating bringing the mask mandate back? I have been so happy without the mask, that I would be so disappointed if they went back to that, here in Wisconsin. It would be hard to put that back on.
Pinky, Happy Birthday to your DH!!!! What a fun weekend you have going! How was dinner last night? And a chance to get all dressed up, for the wedding! I have to admit, I was happy once I had the dress on, and being at the Memorial with it, it was the talk of all the women, so I was happy I did not go with my gut feeling and switch to dress pants and a nice top. Yes, DS is 6 yrs older than I. When all of us sibs were kids, she was the babysitter, and boy was she bossy! So I can see some of that coming out in her. But I won't let her continue, if and when DF comes up here, I will make sure she does not meet him; I won't subject him to her mad attitude. What a great time your vacation sounds like!!!!! You know, if you think of it, you guys were getting away to Vegas every year for NASCAR, and then wasn't there a rodeo too you all would go to? So you are really overdue for a get away!!!
Marsha, even though you most likely won't read this, I will say, lol, good to hear that a spring chicken, still working, has that issue with what day is it! I am sorry it is raining; I can't imagine you guys going to BG this morning. I was surprised to see it was 78 when I got up at 6!!! I had turned off the a/c in the bedroom, and opened up the apartment, which 5 minutes later, shut it all down, and on went the a/c! I am impressed that DS texted you all back right away, (well, right away for him!), AND that he is giving you all an opportunity to meet up with them!
Carol, it must have something to do with getting a bit older, as to why we have to stop and think what day it is. I remember the good old days, back when I was younger, and working full time, I always knew which day it was, especially when it was Friday!!! Lol! Yes, about my DS, I think you are right, being older, and always being our babysitter when we were all kids, she has that mind set that she needs to direct everyone to be good, and careful. That is why I tried telling her that I am going to live my life as I see fit. I am warning everyone, especially family, and my DF. If I decide to go back to work, part time, that is my choice. I know DF is not happy about that, as he wants, eventually for me to be his traveling companion. That is all well and good, but if I feel I need more money, so I don't have to spend my savings, I will do that. I had to laugh when you said that about Scarlet, and I agree, as when I reread the book all these years later, and saw the movie again, that is when DD2 and I had fun dishing on and on about the movie, because it almost seems like the writer was making a joke about the whole thing.
Gareth, good for you, to decide to get therapy for your hand. Who knows, it may make it almost as good as new, or not. I looked at the calendar, and was shocked to see that Aug 1st is a week from tomorrow! Just as how June flew by, July is too! That is awful about the pizza! Especially when you are confident about the food you are getting from that place. One of pet peeves about pizza, that I won't eat it is if it is greasy. No thanks. About my DS, and online, I do not think she has given that any thought, and if she did, she did not say anything to me about it. I am the one that had been telling her about all the crap out there with those scammers. That is why I was so disappointed at Instagram seeming like a dating site. I really like IG, but finally got fed up with all the guys approaching me. Between her and I, she is not as swift about the dark side of the net, which may be a good thing, as I am the one that really needs to be aware. I will go into this further, in the PM I am going to add to the PM we have going right now.
Anngie, what beautiful weather for your fun Saturday!!! Thank you for the recipe, I am going to print it out, as it sounds so good, and a little different than what we usually have for get togethers in the summers. I am hoping to make it, sometime in Sept. About the sleeveless tops, I was that way for years now. It actually was DH that put that in my head, saying kind of nasty, that my arms were to ugly to be sleeveless. But after talking to DS, and the sales women at the boutique, it really should come down to how comfortable you want to feel, with some of these awful hot and humid days. The only thing I have an issue with is the women you see wearing those, but the arm hole is bigger and when they move around, you can see their bra, and maybe a little more than you care to see. That is why I have those pretty bra coverings. I wore that sleeveless shell on the 4th of July, and I had a few compliments. I think what you said about DS is one of the reason's she is being like this. And I do get the impression when she talks about DH sometimes, that she is putting him on a pedestal.
Yesterday I started working on piles of paperwork that is no longer needed and should have been shredded years ago, like the paperwork of buying our house, back in 2000, and so much more, which I could have sworn I shredded earlier this year! I think all that stuff multiplies in whatever tote or closet you store all that!!! Right now I have 3 brown grocery bags filled, waiting to go downstairs, and today I will hopefully finish it all, then take it all to the dumpster, tomorrow morning. I even have tax forms from 2010 to shred! Geez! Also have 2 plants that are just about screaming to be repotted, but I am not real good doing that, so I have to get DD2 over to help me. And that is like pulling teeth!
Will anyone watch the Olympics? I never really paid any attention to them, and now with no fans there to cheer them on, I feel sorry for the athlete's, but still won't watch.
Have a nice day everyone.

Karen, I am sure you will get a kick out of this story, there is a Facebook group that I am not sure why it ever popped up, or why I posted on it, I guess I just can't resist giving advice on our city, but some man posted to me that he likes my profile pic and would like me to friend him. Well, that's not happening, that's for sure. The picture he has up is of a really nice looking man, probably around my age. Just think it's funny.
Anngie, I never had stove-top stuffing, but I kept reading this recipe for the instant pot for chicken and stuffing, which I tried and really messed up, I think not enough liquid, I combined some recipes and thought it would come out, but it was so salty! That casserole sounds good, but my DH does not like summer squash.
We are having such beautiful summer weather here now. We did not have much rain, but enough that I have kept my sprinklers off. I was thinking of turning them back on, but now I see some showers in the forecast. I have errands and shopping for the weekend, nothing planned for tonight but we are meeting friends for dinner tomorrow. Home Depot is having a carpet sale where installation is free, including stairs. I need my upstairs hall and steps done. It is a good amount of carpet, but I think a total of 10 steps, and they charge so much extra for that, I keep hesitating. They may have the type I want for it, more of a commercial carpet than plush because of the stairs. I might just switch up the color too and do gray, because we also want to re-do the floor in our den, and we will do that in gray. Tomorrow we are having a painter come to give us an estimate. I'm only going to do a few rooms at a time, too much work for me to clear away every room for them to do the painting.

Glad to have our walk over early. It's warm and humid already. 94ยบ predicted.
My main reason for not wearing sleeveless tops is I get chilly in A/C. I prefer 3/4 length sleeves or at least to the elbow. I don't like wearing sleeveless either walking since I want my shoulders protected from the sun. I hate wearing sunscreen.
I'm not all that interested in the Olympics. I can see the highlights on the news. I may watch some of the women's gymnastics though to see Simone Biles. She's amazing.
Karen, sometimes it helps to put yourself in somebody elseโs place. What would you say and do if you and your sister's role were reversed? When it comes down to it though you're an adult and have to do what you think is best for you.
Anngie, wish you could share some of all that rain you're getting. We're in such need of rain. It's so dry here.

Robin, you came in while I was posting. I get those same messages too from men all the time on my FB page. Funniest is all the messages I get on IG about different men started following me since though I have an account I never even ever post anything on it.

Robin, I laughed so hard when I read that about the guy and Facebook!!!! Wow, you have a lot to do with your house, and I know what you mean about going one section at a time, that is what I worried about when we were talking about carpeting the 3 rooms at the old house, where would we put everything??? Of course it was those offers where you get it cheaper if you do more rooms at once. We never did get around to doing it. I liked painting though, so when a room needed it, I would do it. Of course our house was small, so it made it easy. The only room that was hard was the bathroom, with it being smaller. Good luck getting all that coordinated.
Gareth, I am not going to put myself in my DS shoes. I am tired of always thinking of the other person first. This is all about me, and I do not care if she does not like what I am doing. If I fall flat on my face, fine, it is on me, and nobody else. But I am hopeful that all will turn out good, that is all I can be at this point, but I am done taking crap from people.
Robin and Gareth: about Facebook, I never ever get friend requests on there, except from people like friends of friends or family. I see those suggestions from Facebook, you know the ones, that say you may want to be friends with this person or that person. Instagram was just the opposite. And that is too bad, because I really liked how I had my IG account set up. Maybe you both have your Facebook settings not as tight as you can have it, for not allowing just anyone to request being a friend.

Karen, I think you misunderstood what I was trying to say. What I meant is if it was she instead of you what would you be advising her? Maybe you wouldn't. Sorry, just trying to give you a different perspective. Back to minding my own business!๐

Marsha, that is strange about smelling food. Is it still going on? I know some people who had Covid said they lost their sense of smell so I guess you have the opposite of Covid.
There is always something going on with houses. I heard DH tell someone when he retired the house would keep him busy but I don't know if he was talking generally or has something in mind.
Karen, I think some people still don't trust dating or matchmaking sites. I known several people who have met through one. I think if you met someone in person first you would still be careful for a while same as if you met someone on-line.
My mother's older sister was 12 years older than her and she was the caretaker of the younger kids. She was always bossy, but never had kids of her own. My mother had a twin sister who died when they were 12. My mom and her other sister got real close after that.
I have a baby shower to go to tomorrow. They had their registry on Amazon which was great because I never had to get out of the house to shop. They have decided not to tell what they are having. Actually, I'm not sure if they even know or they know and aren't telling. Some people don't understand why people do that forgetting for 1000s of years parents never knew what they were having.
We are supposed to get our first 100 degree day tomorrow or Monday and then be up in the high 90s the other days.
Texas is such a red-neck state that I don't think the governor would issue a new mask mandate. You would think people would be getting vaccinations with this new outbreak, but they are not. I don't get it. I guess it will take more deaths for people to get them finally.

Good morning. Yesterday was a bad day to be outside, with that dreaded humidity. Today it is gone, but up to 88. Tomorrow will be 90 here.
Robin, about the Stove Top stuffing, I just made that Mexican Meatloaf from WW, and it calls for 1 cup of the cornbread Stove Top Stuffing, and I did not taste any saltiness, of course there were other things in the meatloaf that may have oven ridden the salt. I think too, one of the chicken crock pot dishes we have passed around here has the S.T. stuffing in it, and that recipe is really good. Where are you meeting your friends for dinner today? Have a great time!
Gareth, most likely I misunderstood what you said about my DS. If it was to look at how I would handle her being the one in my shoes, I know because of her history, I would not say anything, as she seems to, all these years, to have the position in our family of being the substitute mother. I wish I could explain how she even sounds, when she is talking about me and my social life, her voice changes, and she sounds like she is so mad! And the funny thing is, I haven't even done anything for her to be mad about. That is why I said I am done trying to live my life to please others. That is just not going to work, for me anyway. Did it cool off a bit by you? Right now it is absolutely perfect! I would go for a walk, if I wasn't ready to run to the grocery store as soon as I am done on here.
Carol, the thing is, I have never been on a dating web site. I was on Instagram, which is a branch of Facebook. But to me, it seemed like a dating site. I had my Instagram account set up exactly how I wanted it, but with so many men seeming to be on the hunt for women, I deactivated the account. I had gone back on it one night in early July, and I had commented on one of the businesses I follow on there, and right away I got a PM from a man wanting me to let him follow me, then he wants to chit chat. That is how it all starts, and me, in the beginning thinking that yeah I can have some men friends (silly me!!), let them follow me then they come at you with all the questions and let's go to this private chat room, and stuff like that. What makes me mad is I learned the hard way that most of those guys are just looking to get your money. So when I started talking to the guy I am talking with now, I told him right away that the little money I may have, nobody and I mean nobody, is going to get it, so if that is what he is up to, then go away. I told that to one guy, and guess what? Hahahaha, HE LEFT!!!! I was laughing so hard about that!!! Either he was just after my money, or he was insulted that I said that about him. Have fun at that baby shower!
I think I finally got all the shredding done, that needed to be shredded. I had even come upon old tax forms for DH and I, from way back in 2010. It took me almost a whole day, combined between the last couple of days, to get it done. Then I had to haul it all to the dumpster.
Has anyone had any watermelon yet this summer? I am addicted to it, they are so so good this year! I read on FB that some people put salt on theirs!
Have a nice day everyone.

Karen, I used to always salt my watermelon before having to watch my sodium. The watermelon I've had so far this season hasn't been all that great but it's not because of not using salt on it.
Robin, I use the lower sodium stovetop stuffing plus lower sodium soup and broth in the crockpot chicken and stuffing recipe.
Only in the 60's when we walked early. It's warming up fast though. In the 70's now with mid 90's again later. Not the best day to make taco soup but I wanted to use up some ingredients that go in it. Got it all ready to go last night in the crockpot in the fridge so all I have to do is plug it in before we leave for church. Speaking of which just looked at the time so gotta get going....

Gareth, maybe I should take your crockpot chicken and stuffing recipe. I know I did not have enough liquid in it. I might try it again, using low sodium.
Karen, this man did not try to friend me on Facebook, what he did was under my post, he said that he liked my picture, did I want to friend him. I did not answer, but I did not. I follow a few people on Instagram, a few friends and my DDIL. Should probably follow the other. They rarely post on Facebook, you know it's for us older folks. We are going to Capital Grille for dinner. My friend said her DH felt like steak, and I said that was the only place my DH would want to go then, so that's it. 6:00 reservation. We order Chinese last night, but nothing fancy, not much. Right now here it is cloudy, there was rain over night, and supposed to be showers later.
Carol, we have been in our house for 35 years, even though we have changed some things, and updated, some of that was long ago. I have the same vertical blinds I put up in when we moved in, along the back of the house. You talking about the registry reminded me that I should check out DS's registry. I have to tell them that only the things from Pottery Barn kids showed up, and I am sure they have a lot more from Buy Buy Baby. I think they will probably take a lot of the baby things from DS1, like infant seats, the car seat that fits into the stroller because Maddie has gotten too big for the infant one. Definitely ordering off registries, if you can, is great.
I finished Malibu Rising, and loved it, I read a few pages of a Brenda Novak book that is starting off good, The Bookstore at the Beach. Probably a good beach read/romance.
The excitement on Long Island is 2 things, a bull escaped from a farm out east, and there have been a few sitings, but they have not caught it yet, and there are a few sharks along the south shore beaches, and it's the ones directly south of me. They are sending patrols out from the county for that, including helicopter patrols. I don't know what they can do about it, but surely will want to close the beaches to swimming if they are found.

Hot again---going to get to 95. Same tomorrow and then Tues, Wed and Thurs will be 100.
Anngie---thanks for the recipe, looks delicious.
Karen----love watermelon plain or with salt. I have probably bought 4 watermelons already this summer and 3 were wonderful ad the 4th was just okay. Did I say LOVE watermelong.
Robin--exciting news for sure on LI, a loose bull and sharks spotted-----WOW what a combination. That is just crazy.
The wedding we were to of our DF's daughter was beautiful but hot, at the vineyard for the ceremony that is. Pastor cut it short too but it was just simple but elegant. Great reception too.
I am busy getting ready to be gone for next week. Mowing, washing clothes and ironing, making sure bills are paid----trying to get our annual test plot supper somewhat organized as that will be here before we know it. It will be August 18th this year.
I need to scoot-----Hello to everyone!!!

Karen, I guess I should have said someone you met on-line, not just on a dating site.
I got Malibu Rising from my Book of the Month gift a few weeks ago. It is going to be my next read. I'm going to try to read some on my To Be Read shelf before going to the library.
We are under a heat advisory right now. I don't have to be told twice to stay in. I feel sorry for the construction and repair people who have to be outside. I would hate to be up on a roof hammering on shingles in this weather. I think they all drink a lot of water.
We need to replace the carpet in the bedrooms and the hall part of the house. The rest is wood vinyl and is in good shape.
I will probably watch some of the Olympics. It'll be strange not to have people there watching. They had a moment of silence for the Israeli athletes who were killed by the terrorists in 1972 during the Munich olympics. The commentator said this was the first time this had been done and there had been complaints that it hadn't been acknowledged in the past. I have watched a documentary about that whole thing. It is very moving and sad.

Carol, my DH told me about that, for the Israeli athletes, and that it was the first time. I remember when that happened, I was in college. A student who graduated from the high school next to ours, same that DH graduated from, is a dual Israeli/US citizen, and he is playing for Israel's Olympic baseball team. I would have replaced my hall carpet long ago it is wasn't for all the stairs. They charge so much for them. The deal that Home Depot has of not charging installation right now, including for stairs, makes it a good deal. I just have to make sure I am not over-paying for padding or something like that. I hate that stores now price carpet by the square foot instead of square yard, not that I can't multiply. I might do one of the upstairs bedrooms also, although ours needs it really badly, from our various dogs, I want to get at least one of the other rooms done also. Just so much to do.
I am very happy that at the beginning of the month DH will start to collect his maximum social security. At first I thought it made sense for us both to wait until 70, because we were both at the max, but then we figured out that if I started collecting at 66, DH could take half of mine, then switch to his, so it meant he got that half for 2 years, I got mine, and if I live longer I will switch to his, which was what I wanted. I did the math and that did make sense, so now that he turned 70, he gets the switch with this next payment. It's a big difference over what he is getting now.
