Good morning. Once again I could not get my copy/paste to work, so there will not be an opening to our Booklover's Board. Very warm temps, keep cool everyone.
Gareth, call me stupid, but until I watched a little video about watermelon shopping, I did not know there was anything to picking out a good one. And so far it has worked, which is to look at the rind, and if there are yellow, to orangish colors mixed in, then that is a good one, and sure enough that has worked, all this summer so far. Strange that you made taco soup, I have a recipe for what is called tack junk that is made in the crock, ready to go for tomorrow. So I can relate! How long does it look for your heat spell to last?
Robin, I have seen people do that on Instagram, where every time a woman posts a comment to a post, the same named person requests to follow that person that commented. It gets a little redundant and obvious, but they keep doing it. Truly strange people out there. Do you think IG is just for us older people? I have heard that about Facebook too. I guess tiktok is the one for the younger people now. That one does not interest me. How was dinner? My DS told me yesterday that the price of steak in the grocery stores around here are through the roof. Was it bad at the restaurant? Gee, how would you like to see a bull in your back yard?? I bet your dog would freak out! Congrats to your DH!
Pinky, I swear I could live on watermelon. Of course once the season for them is over, then they go back to being not good. As usual you have tons to do! I am happy you will be able to get away and rest up, especially with the 18th coming before you know it.
Carol, when it comes down to it, it sure seems like Instagram is a dating site! And that is too bad, as I really liked IG, but with all the craziness of those men requesting to follow me, that took the fun away. Sorry about your heat advisory. Do you get those very much? If we get them here, it is a big deal. What we have been getting more of this summer is air advisories. Those I hate, as they affect me. That whole thing of Japan insisting on having the Olympics this summer, but having no fans is so weird. I heard that when they canceled it last year, till this year, all the hotels and other businesses went all out, remodeling and all that, for this year, and now with no fans, all those businesses are really hurting.
I have an appointment later this afternoon, and of course by late afternoon we can expect thunderstorms, so I am hoping they hold off till I get home, as the appointment is at the far other side of the city. Then the rest of the week is quiet, so I will work on my budget for August. Fun times!!
Have a nice day everyone.

Karen, I don't think that Instagram is a dating site, or for older people, although i think Tik Tok has taken over a bit. I am not going for another one of these things. I have noticed rising prices on steak in the supermarkets and butchers, but we were kind of talking about this. Capital Grille is a very expensive steak house to begin with. I noticed that certain of their prices did not go up at all, and their steaks were expensive to begin with. They streamlined the menu, no longer offering the petite filet mignon, but I managed to finish mine anyway. I was saying the salads were what they had been, they have Caesar and Wedge, and I know these days some restaurants are charging more than they were for their wedge salad. No doubt about it though, it is an expensive restaurant. Seeing as every time I mentioned prices of some of the restaurants when we were in Delaware being cheaper, DS kept telling me, well we live in NY, so I guess they are cheaper in Massachusetts too, so overall we are more, but you can probably get a meal for 2 for what one of their steaks, without sides, cost. And, I am sure if you order a steak it comes with sides.
We had thunder last night that woke me up and lasted for a while, and kept me up, so I am getting a very late start.

We did get 3/10ths of an inch of rain during the night and cloudiness is hanging in there. It was thundering a little while ago but it passed and no rain ----just sprinkles. Glad we received the rain we did but again not enough.
Karen----I usually look for those spots on watermelons too but still do the tapping test.
Robin------oh that steak sounds so good.
Glad I mowed yesterday so I have that done but most of the other things are left so that is what I will be doing today.
Have a good day everyone!

By time I got home from WM it was already to hot to walk outdoors. We're under a heat advisory with it only getting worse for a few days before it lets up just a little. We need rain so bad and this heat every day isn't helping any.
I finished You Loved Me Once. Normally I don't care much for romance books but this one I really enjoyed. It was a freebie or I wouldn't have even bothered with it otherwise. Now I've started The Nature of Fragility that's starting out to be ok.
Karen, is that Mexican meatloaf recipe on the WW site? Sounds good so I'd love the recipe. I love anything Mexican. The taco soup yesterday was so good. I'd added chicken to it too. That's funny about the taco junk. I almost made that instead of taco soup. I've seen all the tips on getting a good watermelon and it's still hit or miss for me.
Robin, glad we're not steak eaters. Ground beef is getting expensive enough now too.

Hello all. Back to work Monday. Nice weekend with dd. We were going to go to the Botanical Gardens on Saturday morning before it got hot with a backup plan of Farmer’s Market if it was raining early then hot but we didn’t do either because it rained all morning. I went to WW to weigh in, weight the same as last month. Good thing I didn’t wait a few more days! Pizza Saturday night seems to have been to thing that let loose all the snacks that weren’t showing up on the scale so now I have to focus! DD is home today, dentist this morning (hoping she got up and is on her way there now!) then she is supposed to spend the day with her friend but as of last night she hadn’t heard back from him. She’ll go back to Madison tomorrow morning. DD and I went to Marshall’s yesterday. She decided that she should have taken me up on my offer to buy her some clothes that actually fit while she was home last month, she wanted some athletic style shorts to wear. She found several pair but I was sad to see what size she is wearing now (but don’t worry, I kept it to myself and I was trying hard to be encouraging). We also both got new purses. DD says all 3 of her new roommates want to workout and one likes to lift weights so hopefully after she moves she will turn things around a bit, plus classes will be in person so she won’t be so isolated. I have noticed dd’s attitude about life in general seems better, and she offered (unsolicited) that going on the anti depressants was a really good decision, and we discussed how the therapist she changed to this year is much better than the old one. She frequently comments on things they discussed or they are working on. She never said anything about the old one.
I picked up some fresh corn from a stand so tonight will be burgers/hot dogs (dd doesn’t like homemade hamburgers) with corn.
I don’t do Instagram. Just Facebook.
DH picks up watermelon at the grocery store even though he knows I refuse to cut it up. He says he will cut it up but we end up throwing half of them away. Right now there is one on the counter that is over a week old, I think it becomes part of the décor after a while and he doesn’t notice it until it starts to rot and I throw it in the trash.
I have not been watching the olympics. Usually I enjoy it but this year I'm just not that interested. I saw a bit of swimming but it seems like every time I turn it on it's something I don't care about like water polo or 3 person basketball. We've been binge watching Mindhunt on Netflix. Very good if anyone is looking for something, and it is a show all 3 of us are enjoying so we can watch together. We'll get through the last 3 episodes of the 2nd season tonight before dd goes back tomorrow.

Were some of you talking about Wacoal bras a few weeks ago? I just got an email that Nordstrom Rack is having a flash sale on them.

Marsha, thanks for the recommendation of a series. I will check it out. There are so many choices I have trouble deciding what to watch. I watched Julie & Julia last week. I enjoyed it.
It sounds like your DD is in a good place. My DD is going to the gym again and I've noticed she is eating healthier, too. I have no idea what size she wears. We usually get her a gift card to Kohl's so she can pick what she likes.
One of Dh's sisters lives in California and the other is in Connecticut. Whenever we all would be at their parent's house and we would go out to eat, one of the BIL would pick up the check. They said they would pay the same for 2 people back at their homes and there would be 6 of us.
We are hearing of more people getting Covid. You would think that would make more people get the vaccinations but it doesn't seem to be happening. I don't know what would happen if we started having mask mandates again. People would get so enraged about them before. DD, DSIL and DGS wear masks when they go to the store. Last time we were at their house I noticed more people were wearing masks than here at home. People are so tired of Covid but aren't willing to take the precautions to stop it. Just crazy.
I think we will wait a little while before we replace the carpet. We have had so many workmen in and out of the house I want a break. Maybe we'll wait until DH is retired so he can deal with it.

Interesting opinions on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok. I agree that Facebook is used by us “older” people - not sure about Instagram - and TikTok is definitely used by out kids! I’ve often heard Instagram is used more for pictures and if it has become kind of a dating sight then I’ll probably not even bother with it. Not interested in TikTok at all.
Question, what do you do with a friend request that you really don’t want to “friend” nor do you want to hurt a person’s feelings? A couple of weeks ago I got a friend request from a old boss of mine. An excellent boss but the typical womanizer! He divorced and since remarried and moved to FL. As I said, a good boss but he made a mess of his personal life! (what stories I could tell). Anyway, I feel funny not accepting but I really don’t want to get involved in any kind of correspondence - even if it’s just pictures on Facebook. Has anyone just ignored people!?
Karen, most of the watermelons I’ve gotten have been excellent but I have no secret to picking one. This time of year most are probably very good. I’ve never understood why people put salt on watermelon - does salt bring out sweetness? Never tried it. Good job on disposing of that old paperwork!
Robin, I used Stove Top in a crockpot chicken recipe too and it came out so soupy that I needed a slotted spoon to get it out! My DH won’t eat squash either but I make it when we have people over so that I can eat it once in awhile. Gray carpet sounds nice! That’s what is popular right now - especially in painted walls. What kind of flooring are you putting in the den?
Gareth, I don’t like sunscreen either. After I’m in for the day I take a shower just to get it off. Taco soup sounds good to me! As long as I’m in AC, I can eat soup all summer long!
Pinky, safe travels and have a wonderful time!
Marsha, glad to hear things are better for DD. I think DH must be related to my DBIL (DH’s brother). He would leave a watermelon on the counter to rot too.
I just started That Summer by Jennifer Weiner. We’ll see.

Marsha, so glad that things seem to be working out for your DD, and I am sure she will get her weight under control, good not to comment, everyone knows and doesn't want to hear it. It's not like they don't notice the size they wear. Thanks for the Nordstrom's Rack tip, how did I not see that. There is a Nordstrom's Rack right near me, where the Trader Joe's is actually, but I doubt they would have the bra I want in my size, I have never looked though, but now I will.
Carol, I agree with what you said about your DBIL, I wouldn't be surprised at all that prices were so much higher in CA, or even certain places in CT. As small a state as it is, if you are closer down toward NY, along the Long Island Sound, prices are higher. You get further out and to the north, they are lower. Sorry to hear about more COVID cases. I stopped to drop things off at the UPS store, I was feeling guilty, I didn't bother with my mask, and I was the only one in their without one.
Anngie, I guess I am not the only one who messes these things up. If DH wants dinner, I am going to improvise with a pre-marinated Carne Asada I have, and rice.
