Day 31 Decide About Drinking
Whether or not to drink alcohol is a personal choice. If you decide to drink alcohol you need to plan on how to fit it into your food plan.
According to Beck alcohol has 7 calories per gram which is about twice the 4 calories per gram of protein and carbs. Mixers for drinks often are caloric too so mixed drinks can end up being a lot of calories. She points out that if you eat less to be able to drink you could rebound by eating more later because you are hungry. You can also end up overeating because alcohol lowers your inhibitions.
Beck feels that if you donβt plan ahead about your drinking of alcohol you can easier end up drinking too much.
If you want to include drinking alcohol in your food plan she suggests you list the advantages and disadvantages and figure out how to fit it in.
Do you plan on drinking alcohol? If you do how do you fit it in?
Do you have sabotaging thoughts about drinking alcohol? How do you handle them?

I don't drink alcohol any more. If I do drink it I end up depressed the next day.

Do you plan on drinking alcohol? If you do how do you fit it in? I have less now due to the economic situation and watching our expenses. I plan for it once a month and work it into the points allotted.
Do you have sabotaging thoughts about drinking alcohol? How do you handle them? Perhaps? Usually, these days, it is not in the house so not an issue. I also looked up the impact on blood pressure and as I am trying to cut back on medication and alcohol can increase blood pressure...might have another advantage card to write for this subject

bbbearsmomIn reference to cathygeha comment on alcohol causing blood pressure to rise. There are foods that have a lot of tyramine in them, the reason I know is people who have migraines have to avoid all or some of those foods which I do. Alcohol is included on that list and tyramine foods can raise your blood pressure. My Mayo Clinic doctor found I had PVC's 25 per cent of the time, I was on Miralax for a number of years, quit taking the Miralax and 6 months later the PVC's were gone! I have low kidney function and when I quit eating high potassium foods like potatoes my kidney function went up 10 points! Food does have a big effect on our bodies!

I don't drink a lot though I've recently acquired a taste for spritzers. But in moderation as I've never been a drinker.

mac , Very interesting comment, thanks for sharing. Why did the Miralax give you PVC's?

Why did the Miralax give you PVC's? * I had a lot of diarrhea over the years when taking it and my heart doctor thought it was from an electrolyte imbalance, possibly to much potassium got taken out of my system with diarrhea. I was lucky they found it at Mayo because it meant my heart was skipping a beat 1/4 of the time, too high per cent that would have caused heart problems down the road. I also found on the internet that it could cause heart rythmn problems, listed as a rare side effect. The heart doctor asked me what I was using and we didn't check my medicine list, herbs and a lot of things can cause these heart rythmn problems. It was really scary.
I also read about a guy who had afib, another heart rythmn problem who was sensitive to tyramine, that I talked about in above post, when he stopped eating foods with tyramine his afib went away!

My husband and very rarely drink at home together, but we might have a drink when dining with friends. I try to keep it to 1 drink, maybe 2 over the course of the evening on a weekend. Trying not to indulge during the week when with friends, by drinking kombucha or seltzer.
