It seems to be such a mess. I feel sorry for the people. I guess this was the end from the time the first boot from our military was on the ground there. Supposedly back in 2001/2002 the Taliban offered to lay down their arms but the Bush administration said no, we are going to make Afghanistan a Westernized country.

From all I can gather it was always going to end this way. One general was complaining that we left during "fighting season", summer, and it would have been better to leave during the winter. Then he thought about it and admitted the outcome would be the same.
Biden has wanted to get out of there since 2012. He opposed Obama's troop surge. My main complaint is Blinken's comments that we had achieved our objectives so it's OK to leave. Uh, no one thinks that. He's Secretary of State.

There was never going to be a good time to leave. Harold was reading something online by someone who was training the Afghans to be in their Army. He said they were from different tribes and didn't like each other, also they couldn't read, and had no understanding of math. I also heard (might or might not be true), we dealt with the leadership of the government entities we set up(I guess like towns, districts), the Taliban dealt with the war lords of the tribes. My husband keeps saying it isn't a country it is a collection of tribes.

Sadly, the people get caught in the middle I read an article that basically said, since the beginning of civilization, that part of the world has been at war. I can't remember a time of peace that lasted there. Even just looking through history, there really hasn't been any period where there wasn't conflict or outright war. I'm not sure anyone/anything is going to change that, ever.

Seeing republican news feed headlines "Biden under intense scrutiny" - he should be! Every president should be. It was only the previous "butt in that chair" that was "hands off" from those media outlets lol.

There was a president in the WH before President Biden? Who knew? I've never seen a picture from that part of the world that wasn't a group of bearded angry looking men all standing in a row fondly snuggling up to their rifles. A picture perfect post card for tourism. The women must be so weary of this.

Trump booed by Alabama crowd after pro-vaccine comment. We are doomed.

lani, I've been having the thoughts again about this being for the rest of my life. I hope my husband and I don't get it, we work on being careful. At least Connecticut and my city tries a little harder than Alabama. I have trouble getting out anyway and worrying about COVID doesn't help that, another reason to stay isolated.

bbbearsmom, I have heard some medical folks opining that Covid will become endemic in the U.S., and eventually there will be an annual vaccine like a flu shot.

I think Afghanistan was always going to end badly, but this withdrawal could have been managed so much better (understatement of the year). Remember the general and others quitting after we left the Kurds in the lurch? Where was the intelligence on the Afghan situation that could have seen this coming and did much better planning? I blame the people advising Biden more than the man himself. Although with his foreign policy experience the whole thing is surprising, nay, shocking.

He is the one who made the deal with the Taliban and set the withdrawal date. And yet, no plan at all. What would he have done if he'd actually won a second term?
