Good morning all. Ginny, I'm sure you're going to make some very cute masks for your grandchildren.
I've been working on inventorying my yarn for quite awhile now and still have not come close to being done. It's, surprisingly, a very hard job. Plus finding space to put it all back and picking the right spot for it is not easy.
Besides that, today I'm going to finish a thermal stitch hotpad for dgd and dgs and then work on a pattern that a person who's site is called Purple Iguana write and that a man who calls himself Fiber Spider does a youtube video on..It's called, on his channel Turn any shawl into a gaiter. So basically it's a neck and upper chest warmer and it takes no time at all to make one so I'm changing my plan for Christmas to being in addition to tote bags the girls will all get one of these.I did half of one the other night and it took less than a half hour.

Ruth that fiber spider sure sounds interesting!! Also easy to make (yay~~) and will make an awesome gift. Organizing yarn is sort of like organizing fabric….and not nearly as easy as it sounds.
Super tired today….tomorrow is busy but i am home a lot which is good. Got a few masks made or cut and hope to finish them over the weekend. Ginny

Hello Everyone - Hope you are all doing well today and having nice weather. It's cooler here today - in the 70s, so it's nice to have the house cool down. I went out earlier to run some errands. I try not to go out on Fridays because there is so much more traffic, but it wasn't too bad. I've finished hand quilting all the sashings on my sampler quilt and I'm working on the inner border now. Then I'll just have the outer border to quilt and the binding to finish. I'm hoping to use a stencil on the outer border This will be new for me, so we'll see how it works. Hope you all get to do some crafting today. Take care

Good to see you here CJ! Nice that you have cooler weather in your area (me too). So nice to be able to open windows and doors and let the dry air in. I am happy for you that you did not hit much traffic today and that you got your errands done uneventfully. It is always a bit of a conundrum when you decide to go out for errands and wonder if things will go smoothly or not. Sounds like you had a productive day- getting out to do what you must, and then finishing the hand quilting and working on the inner border. Using a stencil on the outer will be fun for you…..are you using that gold quilting paper to transfer the pattern or do you use chalk to transfer the pattern??
Got a few more masks done, but now I am running out of elastic. Got a few completed but think I have 5 masks that need elastic. I am hoping to switch over to Christmas ornaments soon Ginny

CJ, it's nice that you're having cooler weather and it's less humid. Having the house cool off on it's own is always better than a/c. I'm glad also that you got so much done on your sampler quilt. It's got to be a great feeling to see all the progress you've made. I know you are happy to have your errands done.
Ginny, you do have such busy days. Yes, from mid March to almost the end of 2020 elastic was hard to find. I had a stash of it too, of course, you know me, the hoarder. Some was not the right size, some was brittle and disintegrated but there was a lot that worked fine. Now it seems that it's much easier to find all the things that were in short supply last year.
I did finish one of the shawl/neckwarmer combo item and started another. Last night I got the idea to make each one starting with a different one of Fiber Spider's shawls. He's made a lot of them. Some I don't care for but most are great and will really work. You have to have a shawl that starts at the bottom to make one of these.Today I'm doing a waffle stitch one
DH sent me to the mailbox because something he ordered had been delivered. When I got it home he told me to open it as it was a birthday gift for me. Of course my birthday isn't until next month but he's more eager for me to open gifts than I am actually. This one turned out to be five pounds of Dad's root beer barrels. These things are going to last me forever!! It used to be that I could sit and unconsciously eat a huge amount of hard candies without even paying attention. Now I have a little more control, thankfully.

All of a sudden we could smell smoke. It's not from the smoke we seem to have all the time now from the wildfires in the west. I don't see any sign of more smoke and no sign of fire, there's just the strong smell. My dd lives on the other side of town so I sent a message and asked her if she heard about any local fires. At first she didn't know of any but just now she said she heard a hotel that's a few miles east of her is on fire. Dh and I did go through our emergency bags and made sure we had what we need in them esp car keys. If the smoke is from a fire way over east of town it's no danger to us and is far enough away from dd and her kids that have their own homes.
Now that we know we're safe for now I'll go back to crocheting
Sleep well.

A most solemn Patriots day to everyone…..never forget.
Ruth, wow. Glad you, DH and your family are all ok and that there is no wild fire. Of course its not good news that the hotel was on fire, but I would hope that was easily controlled and all are safe. Where you live are residents encouraged to have emergency bags ready like that? What a wonderful story about your root beer barrels. Such a sweet story and how thoughtful of your Dh to order the candy you love !!! I will have to check out the fiber spiders….sure sounds unique and interesting and it must be a good project cause you do so much crocheting and would know something really great. Are they hard to make?
My head is still reeling about what I think it will cost to really fix my water problems. Its not going to be cheap but this contractor warrantees his work, and that warrantee stays with the house. It puts to bed a problem that Dh and I had been dealing with for years (although it was not evident for at least the first 10 years).
Got some more masks done but now the limiting factor is the elastic. I am going to see if I can order it online from Walmart. I want the right elastic as these masks are for my grandkids and DD’s so i want them to look right.
God bless America.

Yes it is a solemn day indeed. Some many lost their lives that day and others were exposed to toxic chemicals which caused them to lose their lives later as they contacted cancer and other medical issues that were fatal. It's a good day to refect on what can happen and, with recent events it could very likely happen again. We need to pray for our country and for our leaders to make God inspired decisions On that day 20 years ago, I was only slightly personally impacted as dh and I were scheduled to leave that day to visit our son and his little family as they were soon to add baby #2. It was hardly a blip in comparison to what others suffered and many are still suffering.
Ginny when I moved here many of my patients were giving me advice. Most of it entailed being prepared for winters here such as having needed emergency supplies in one's vehicle. No one mentioned the wildfires that can easily happened in a very dry climate like this. It was the mountain fire in 2006 that made us get things together in a "bugout" bag. At that time we were strongly advised by the sheriff's dept to evacuate. We did get things packed into our truck and car but never ended up leaving but it did remind us that, at any time, we might have to go somewhere else...that and my neighbor's house catching fire in the middle of the night.
Fiber Spider who's real name is Craig is an interesting young man. He has some medical condition which causes his hands to shake and yet he makes really beautiful crochet items and does a great job in his videos showing exactly how to make them. Yes these gaiters are extremely easy to make esp if you use the granny stitch he shows in his video. It takes no time at all.He does say that you can make the shawl part from any bottom up shawl pattern and he has plenty of those.
Ginny, yes when making things for our grands and our children we want them to really work esp those masks. I hope you can find the elastic you need. I imagine that a repair like you're talking about really does cost a lot! I hope it can be done quickly and that they do a really great job.I'm still waiting to find out if I will have to do the more costly repair of my septic system which, if the field needs replacing will cost, according to online info, at least $10,000. And the other bad thing about your repair is that it sounds like it if going to be done inside your house which will be a huge mess and inconvenience not to mention the tremendous expense. With the warranty that's provided it sounds as if this contractor is the best for you to have chosen

Hello Everyone Ruth - I'm glad you were ready to leave if you needed too, and happy that you didn't have to. I keep a few important documents with me all the time when I'm home just in case I would have to leave the house quickly. Enjoy your root beer barrels Ginny - I'm sorry you are going to have the expense and mess of those repairs, and hope that everything goes alright. I've been watching some of the shows about September 11th. There are few new ones on the History Channel tonight. It is a day that I'll never forget either, so many killed and other's lives changed forever. I actually worked near the Pentagon at that time but wasn't at work that day since I had to take my father for a medical procedure - we were in Downtown Washington DC when the attacks happened. It was very surreal going home from the hospital seeing military/police with assault rifles stationed around the government buildings and also all the military aircraft from Andrews Air Force Base flying around. I worked on the Block 10 of the Summer Soiree this morning and finished and then when I looked at it something wasn't right. I really read that pattern closely but unfortunately I messed up 8 of the blocks (there are 16 blocks in this one piece). So I had to rip the whole thing apart and now I'm ready to fix the 8 blocks that were wrong and put it back together again. I thought about just remaking the whole block, but I'm getting short on a few of the fabrics and I was able to use some of the half square triangles that I had left over as bonus ones from earlier blocks. Only 2 more blocks to do and I sure hope I don't have to rip those apart I also put away the portable AC unit from downstairs today. I'll just use fans for the rest of the month until it's cooler. I'm keeping the AC unit in my bedroom for a few more weeks. Take care everyone!

CJ- I actually figured you worked near or in Washington DC. (You must have mentioned something about that earlier). And your Dad was still alive then- your life sure has changed a lot in 20 years. I am sure watching/listening to the news coverage today is very moving for you also. Hope that you do not have to rip out any more blocks and that you are in final assembly. Hope those 8 blocks go back together easily for you!!!! Yay yay yay!! good to hear that you can put away the portable AC unit.
Ruth-sounds like a bug out bag is a good idea!!! ( I know my Dd has one at her house for each member of her family). When are you expecting to get final cost information on your septic system? Yes my house is going to be messy, but honestly, so is having your basement flooded- even by a relatively small amount of water.
I made 3 batches of grape jelly today…think there might be 2 more batches of jelly on the grape vines. Interesting story….as I went out to pick the final grapes for the last batch I noticed a bird that appeared to be also eating grapes. Well I know there are plenty of grapes out there, both for me to pick and a bird to eat so I let it stay. Then I realized the wee little one was stuck in my bird netting….a conundrum for me as it was a struggle to get to where it was. I was able to pretty easily cut the netting loose and the little bird flew away.
Have a good night all Ginny

CJ, you and Ginny were much too close to the horrific terrorist attack. I'm glad you weren't closer. I'm sorry that you had to rip out your blocks but it's great that you're going to go ahead right away and make them over.
Ginny, what are you going to do with all that jelly? Sounds like it's a LOT!

Dh and I could actually see the towers burning- I worked in the tallest building one county (and a river crossing!) away (30 miles). We stood on the roof of the building I worked in and could see the horror….one of many reasons why i left that job and started working much closer to home.
Well yes its a ton of jelly. DD#1 actually got in trouble with her kids…..DGS#1 had 2 pieces of toast with jelly on it while they were here helping make jelly….and at their house DD bought prepackaged bagels. Since Jelly day, the kids have been enjoying jelly on a toasted bagel for breakfast. they ran out of bagels. DGD#2 was furious cause she could not get her home made jelly that am!!!! I am going to give DD#1 another couple of jars of jelly (she already has 5), and gave DD#2 4 jars yesterday. Will give some to a neighbor….who helped cat sit for me, and a jar to Jane and the other neighbor I attend church with. That still leaves me with a lot of jelly. Will figure out something!!! Yes its a lot of jelly.

The sight of the towers burning was horrible enough watching on tv. I can't imagine seeing that in person . And I can't imagine the fear of those that were right there.Just the thought is terrifying. Well Jelly lasts a long time so you'll be able to enjoy it often. I hope your dd got some more bagels. The little ones are in their jelly and bagel breakfast routine now All the smoke seems to be gone now. I thought I'd never see a clear view of the mountain again. I hope it never comes back because it may be a sign that all the fires are coming under control. I thought smoke was another of our "new normals"

Ruth, so good that you can see the mountain again!!! Have you had rain to help bring the fires under control? How are those root beer barrels?- when was the last time you had some?
Think I will give Dd a few more jars of jelly when I see her Thursday. And I too hope she picked up more bagels…
Going out on the deck to read the paper. Lovely day
