What in your background gave you the idea to lose weight, gave you the feeling you should diet to lose weight?

Although no one around me dieted when I was young I somehow knew about dieting to lose weight. I remember seeing the diet aid Ayds in the drug store when I was young and knew what it was for. I think my sister went on a diet before she got married in our 20's but she didn't talk to me about it. I did think that being overweight was a negative, I think I picked up on some of the things that were said about my sister being overweight and how she was treated. I wasn't overweight/obese until I was in my 30's and I lamented that I wasn't skinny like I use to be but didn't do anything about it, honestly I didn't know what to do. Oh, one of my brothers and his wife lost weight on WW in the early 70's and his wife went on to work for WW as a receptionist for years. Anyway getting to me my doctor started treating me for obesity and insisted I go on a diet. I remember telling him I was happy overweight because I know looked like the rest of my family after being super skinny for years. The big part of my weight gain was because of a psych med he had put me on. When I was really big (class II obese) two different members of my family talked to me for an hour explaining how I needed to do something because of my health. My new doctor also mentioned weight loss because I was pre-diabetic. The year she told me I was going to get diabetes got me to do something. I have a fear of diabetes.

My father and two aunts from different sides of my family were always on and off diets and dealing with weight issues. I never had a weight problem until my first year of college. I'm not even sure how aware of it I was. It was my mother who said we were going to Weight Watchers so I went with her. I really don't even remember discussing with her that I had gained weight. And she, at that point, probably had gained some weight too, though she was just probably somewhat overweight, never obese. That was the beginning of many many years of up and down weight for me. A long time after that, after losing and gaining and losing so many times, I eventually crossed into the obese category. That and a picture of myself from around that time got me seriously getting on board with more permanent weight loss. bbbearsmom, Weight management has so many issues attached - your feeling of being happy that you were overweight because you looked like the rest of your family is striking.

bbbearsmom, I was completely oblivious to the health impact of being overweight/obese for years.

Thursday, 10/07 What were the biggest changes to your eating when you started Weight Watchers?

My two biggest changes when I started WW was not bringing sweets into the house, and starting to eat fruits and veggies again. A psych med I was put on took away my appetite for fruits and veggies so I had to reteach myself to eat them. Not bringing the sweets home was a big help.

Biggest change - eating more vegetables. WW helped with this. The plan I was first on had specific amounts of specific foods or categories of foods to eat each day, later plans had exchanges, and then points and good health guidelines, and all encouraged eating vegetables. But in more recent years, I've also been eating even more vegetables based on other things I've read - Mediterranean, DASH, anti-inflammation diets, Michael Pollan ("Eat food. Mostly plants. Not too much."). I try to eat a minimum of 5 servings of vegetables, in addition to a little fruit, each day.

Yes, I do meditate. I've done it for a few years. Right now I don't do it everyday but a number of days per week. I started with guided meditation videos on You Tube, moved on to Deepak Chopra meditations. Did those for a few years. Am now doing online meditations by Tara Brach. Someone has recommended 10% Happier but I'm not ready to pay that much plus do a change right now. Meditation helps with my anxiety and I think it has improved my sleep.

I don't meditate, but I have learned and practiced mind techniques/relaxation - maybe it's the same thing or very similar. But it's not something I do regularly. bbbearsmom - sounds like it's very beneficial to you. I've heard the same from others.
