We were talking on the last thread about how we don't always appreciate something in the beginning. That actually happened to me with TED LASSO. I stuck with it, and am I glad I did! LOVE that show.
I just finished watching AMERICAN MASTERS-RITA MORENO: JUST A GIRL WHO DECIDED TO GO FOR IT. It is wonderful, as is Rita Moreno. She is 87 and still so strong, beautiful and full of life. I saw her in a lot of things but did not know who she was until she played Tuptim in the movie version of THE KING AND I. But the first time her personality really started to come through, I think, was when she was in the film version of WEST SIDE STORY. Perfect in that role. I recommend this show very highly. She had a tough life in the past but it has just made her stronger.

Gail in SC, PBS is so great. BTW, that 2 part thing on Hearst was on American Experience, not American Masters as I posted. But I suppose anyone interested would just search for "Hearst". DH watched PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN. He is more interested in that sort of movie than me. Not sure why it doesn't strike a chord with me.

Tonight I watched 2 sessions of THE GREAT BRITISH BAKING SHOW on Netflix. Most of the things they make are just astounding. I love the relationships that develop among the bakers.
Also one session of THE OPRAH BOOK CLUB on Apple TV+. This was on AMERIAN DIRT. There has been a huge uproar about the book and about some words in it and about it by the author were upsetting to people of color. I thought Oprah handled it well. In addition to the author, she had guests of color who were authors and the publishers. Bottom line is that the publishing industry needs to get more people of color involved. People in the audience said the book had awakened them to how terrible it was to have to leave your country and get into the U.S. I did like the book, by the way.

My movie group starts Thursday. So excited. We are each taking a turn presenting a movie for discussion that won the Golden Palm at the Cannes Festival. I think I mentioned that the leader and I are doing SHOPLIFTERS. It is a Japanese film about a family surviving on shoplifting and other questionable activities. The film is really like an onion, with very surprising layers revealed along the way. I love it, have already seen it three times, but have no idea how the group will take it. It is as far from a Hollywood film as you can get. In Japanese with English subtitles. I found it devastatingly beautiful. Sorry if I am repeating myself.
Tonight I will watch PBS offerings. I will look for Hearst, Lani. Thanks.

So Hearst is on my list. Has anyone seen anything else recently to recommend?

I Really liked NEWS OF THE WORLD. 2020 MOVIE with Tom Hanks. NEWS OF THE WORLD 2020
TOM HANKS Five years after the Civil War, Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd moves from town to town as a non-fiction storyteller, sharing the news from the far reaches of the globe. In the plains of Texas, he crosses paths with a 10-year-old girl taken in by the Kiowa people and raised as one of their own. Kidd agrees to deliver the child where the law says she belongs. As they travel hundreds of miles into the unforgiving wilderness, the two face tremendous challenges of both human and natural forces as they search for a place they can call home.
Keeping up with my old movie watching, I chose PLAY MISTY FOR ME. Not sure how I missed this one, too busy taking care of 2 little girls, I guess. Not much time for movies in the theater. PLAY MISTY FOR ME 1971
Silver-tongued radio disc jockey Dave (Clint Eastwood) can't help but notice the persistent calls from a female to "play 'Misty' for me." But a chance meeting with infatuated fan Evelyn leads to a brief and steamy love affair. Dave quickly learns he's in for more than a little night music, and that Evelyn will stop at nothing -- even the return of one of Dave's old flames -- to have him all to herself. The film marks Eastwood's directorial debut.
Clint Eastwood, Jessica Walter, Donna Mills
Jessica Walters was a real crazy lady in this movie and bet she enjoyed every minute of it. Young Eastwood was a super hunk in this movie and yep Donna Mills was the really good girl!! Fun fun fun.

I saw this in the 70s. Bonus points for being filmed in and around Carmel, fairly close to where I live. I believe this is where Clint became enamored of Carmel and decided he wanted to live there eventually. He became mayor too.

Last night we watched a funny movie from 2008 that I must have missed on Amazon Prime. If you are in the mood for a goofy movie with a good cast give it a try.
MY MOM'S NEW BOYFRIEND ~ After several years away, FBI agent Henry Durand (Colin Hanks) returns to find his mother, Marty (Meg Ryan), a much different person: Having long mourned for Henry's father, she is now embracing single life. One day, while Marty, Henry and his new fiancée, Emily (Selma Blair), are out for a walk, they meet Tommy (Antonio Banderas), a mysterious stranger, with whom Marty then becomes involved. However, through his FBI contacts, Henry learns that Tommy is suspected of being an art thief.

I just watched another movie for my film class, BLOWUP, directed by Michelangelo Antonioni with Vanessa Redgrave, Sarah Miles, David Hemmings, John Castle. It was a 1966 film taking place in London in the Mod period. It is totally involving but strange. It is about a photographer who thinks he has captured a murder in a series of photos. The photographer really only comes alive while he is trying to figure out what the photos reveal. I forgot how beautiful Vanessa Redgrave was at that time. She was 29. Always beautiful, but a young beautiful. I have to watch it again before the class! Colin Hanks is Tom Hanks' son. I have to watch this. Don't remember seeing it! Bonus points for being filmed in and around Carmel, fairly close to where I live. You live in one of the most beautiful areas, Lani. Quite a film.

Gail in SC, "Colin Hanks is Tom Hanks' son. I have to watch this. Don't remember seeing it!" I did not realize this. Now that you mentioned it, they do look quite a bit alike. He is also on THE IMPEACHMENT. Speaking of actors and their children, are you watching DWTS? Olivia Jade is Lori Loughlin's daughter (who went to prison for college admissions fraud). Olivia looks just like her mom. It is uncanny!

Does anyone on this thread watch THE MORNING SHOW? I was thinking when I saw the season premiere that it was not as interesting. But that has definitely changed. Thanks for all of these recommendations! Ruth, I cannot figure out how to access the local channels now that I am just doing streaming. More expensive, but I think I am going back to cable. So no, no DWTS. I can't even get THE VOICE, which I do enjoy.

You live in one of the most beautiful areas When I say "fairly close" I mean it's within a 45 minute drive! But my actual location is not bad either.
