I put away a book from the library to start another one Not saying I won’t go back to it but it just did not seem interesting right now. So I am reading Lisa Jackson THE THIRD GRAVE. The old Beaumont mansion is a rotting shell of it’s once grand self, especially after a hurricane sweeps through Savannah,, it takes more than shutters and shingles, it leads to a grisly find of 3 graves but only 2 bodies of young girls. Nikki Gillette and her husband Detective Pierce Reed find the cold case leading to a new nightmare. This one starts with a bang so I am good.
The sun is shining but the wind is blowing and it is only 47°. My peony bush has hit the dust and the brown eyed susan are ready to cut off as well not sure I am getting to them today will see how t his afternoon turns out. Love the blue skies.
I was interested in THE NAMELESS ONES and this is what I read about it.
The 19th novel in the Charlie Parker series barely features John Connolly’s troubled detective. Instead, this story belongs to his associates Louis and Angel. Lovers, as well as partners in crime, they are a study in contrasts. Louis is black, always immaculately presented, and a cold-bloodied assassin. Angel is white, shabbily dressed, recovering from cancer, and a thief who will fight if he has too, but would rather not. They are drawn into the story by the murder of Louis’ friend and fixer De Jaager, in Amsterdam.
As much as I enjoy Louis and Angel, the absence of the main detective does leave a hole, and probably means this isn’t the best book for new readers to dip their toe into the series. I would suggest either starting at the beginning with Every Dead Thing, or The Dirty South. If you’re not looking for a new series, then I can see it would act as a great standalone thriller. Devotees of Connolly will of course lap it up. As an Connolly’s fan I have it on my ‘TO READ’ list.
WHAT ARE YOU READING ??

conniej, lot of disturbing violence, as always, with Connolly. Personally, I don't mind, as I think violence should be disturbing. But not for everyone. Along with THE ARGONAUTIKA, I started Aeschylus' THE ORESTEIA, three plays about of Agamemnon and family. Speaking of violence... I made sure to get a good translation this time.

Last week I finished PIRANESI by Susanna Clarke. It's been nominated for several awards (and didn't get them), though according to its Amazon page, it won the Women's Prize for Fiction.
It's been a while since I read a book this boring. I am an author. And as an author, I make sure that by the end of chapter 1 (or 10% of the book, whichever comes first), the reader knows who the main character is (not everything, but enough to picture the character), what the character's goal is, and what the stakes are. As a reader, I expect the same from other authors. In this novel, according to my Kindle reader, I was 40% through the book before I felt I was given all of these essentials.
The novel starts out with an unknown, unnamed character making what the character believes are scientific observations about the house the character lives in. Because I have a degree in physics, I am all for books including scientific methods. As an author and a reader, I also expect scientific investigations in novels to be at least interesting, if not exciting. Not the case here.
I kept reading, nonetheless, and according to my Kindle reader, I was 80% through the book before the novel became interesting enough that I actually wanted to continue to the end.
I read this novel in its entirety because it was suggested as a possible future topic for my book discussion group. Since it's been nominated for so many awards, I take it that there were readers who enjoyed it. I was not one of them. (And did I mention that I found it boring?)

Mollyann,
I'm glad you enjoyed my review. I don't mind at all mentioning my books. My works of fiction include Defying the Ghosts (my latest, a 2020 release, young adult), Wondry Dragon Finds a Home (children's), The Arachne Portal (science fiction) and Sword of Queens (fantasy).
Thanks for asking! Joan

Boy I picked 2!! count them 2 books I just couldn't get into at the library the last time. I might as well take them all back now early. I was going to do that today but dropped off the cardboard to the recycle place and just came back home. Maybe tomorrow. both new authors for me and I won't be looking for more by them. I am starting A WEB OF EVIL by J.A,. Jance . Will let you know if I can keep reading on this one.

PIRANESI by Susanna Clarke. I absolutely adore JONATHAN STRANGE AND MR. NORRELL and have been waiting years for another book by her. I know her brother was ill for a long time and she was taking care of him until his death, hence the long delay. However, when I read the reviews of PIRANESI I was pretty sure it was not for me. Glad to have that confirmed. IMO she can rest her career on her first work. I don't know what exactly about it appeals to me so much, but it is one of my all time favorites. I have read it at least three times. I know some people could not get through it. Different strokes, and all that. It must be wonderful to be creative and a writer. As an avid reader, what would I do without you authors?

I Opened a Book
By Julia Donaldson
I opened a book and in I strode.
Now nobody can find me.
I’ve left my chair, my house, my road,
My town and my world behind me.
I’m wearing the cloak, I’ve slipped on the ring,
I’ve swallowed the magic potion.
I’ve fought with a dragon, dined with a king
And dived in a bottomless ocean.
I opened a book and made some friends.
I shared their tears and laughter
And followed their road with its bumps and bends
To the happily ever after.
I finished my book and out I came.
The cloak can no longer hide me.
My chair and my house are just the same,
But I have a book inside me.

conniej, love it. George R.R. Martin said (I'm paraphrasing) a person lives a single life; a person who reads lives a thousand lives.

The Dark Hours
by Michael Connelly Release Date: November 9, 2021 Ballard and Bosch join forces There’s chaos in Hollywood at the end of the New Year’s Eve countdown. Working her graveyard shift, LAPD detective Renée Ballard waits out the traditional rain of lead as hundreds of revelers shoot their guns into the air. Only minutes after midnight, Ballard is called to a scene where a hardworking auto shop owner has been fatally hit by a bullet in the middle of a crowded street party. Ballard quickly determines that the deadly bullet could not have fallen from the sky and that it is linked to another unsolved murder—a case at one time worked by Detective Harry Bosch. At the same time, Ballard hunts a fiendish pair of serial rapists, the Midnight Men, who have been terrorizing women and leaving no trace.
