Day 10 – Set a Realistic Goal
Beck talks about being realistic goal when you set a goal for weight loss. It is important to be realistic about your rate of weight loss because one of the bigger reasons people quit their attempts at weight loss is because they aren’t losing weight fast enough. She also points out the option of just having your goal being five pounds at a time.
Since a lot of us are at our goal weight this can also speak to us about setting other goals, for example exercise goals. We need to be realistic with those too or else we wear ourselves out and may fall into “all or nothing” thinking and stop exercising at all, could also happen with weight loss goals.
If you are losing, what type of weight loss goal have you set for yourself? Do you think it is realistic and how will you handle it if you have setbacks?
For those of us maintaining I am assuming that we all have the general “maintain my goal weight” goal. Have you found that goal a realistic one for yourself and the life you live? How do you handle setbacks?
Heads up: Day 12 (Friday) is “skip lunch” day. You might want to think ahead about that so you can be prepared to do it on Friday, although there is no obligation to do it if you don’t want to and if you want to do it you can do it any day you choose.

I've been maintaining for almost 14 years and so far my goal weight has been realistic to maintain. It fits into the life I live, if I socialized more and/or went out to eat more I would have to adapt to stay on plan. Usually I handle setbacks by talking to myself and getting my act together and get back on plan.

Have you found that goal a realistic one for yourself and the life you live? * For my age the goal I'm at right now is realistic. When I was younger my goal was 7 pounds lower, it was really hard to maintain at that goal, my doctor suggested I raise my goal which I did.
How do you handle setbacks? * I don't have many set backs because I don't keep trigger foods in my house and I pre track everything I eat. I do have setbacks when I eat out and know I have to get back on plan the next day.

I like the 5 pound loss at a time goals. Setbacks have been challenging because I lack months on end consistency when it comes to eating on plan. This summer I was pretty lax and took breaks from preplanning and logging. But I eventually do get back on the straight and narrow. Each Beck review and setback teaches me something new and gets me into a better mind set. I’m paying thoughtful attention to what I’m doing this round and flexing no choice muscles more often than not. Decision fatigue is going away. I am still optimistic that I’ll get to goal, it’s just not happening in the timeframe I thought it would. It is a long haul game. It means batching meals and eating fairly narrowly during the week to keep meals easy and simple. And planning for meals out when they occur.

My goal is to get back to 145 with clothes on so that if/when I weigh at a WW site in the future (should I do so) I will be at goal weight. I figure that in HS I weighed 140 most of the time and that 140-145 was easy to maintain while 135 was more difficult in 1984...lasted through the six weeks of having to do so but not much longer. SO...145-ish BUT I also have a small goal now to get into the 140's and see it in the near future...as I am turtling at the moment it will hopefully be by my birthday in February...for one or both goals!
Do you think it is realistic and how will you handle it if you have setbacks? I plan to have an "alarm" weight that if I see it on the scale in the morning will have me leaving maintenance eating for weight loss eating. I have setbacks frequently on this journey BUT am seeing it as a lifelong trip and not just a trip to goal...and that should help.

I'm in basically the same sitution as mac, My original goal was to weigh the same as I did when I was age 21. Eventually I got to that goal. However, I found that it was not sustainable at age 65. My doctor gave me a revised goal that was more appropriate to my older body. Setbacks happen when I take my eye off the prize. I cherish Beck's advice that we can get back on track RIGHT NOW. We don't have to wait until Monday, or the first of the month, or the first of the year.

My end goal is reasonable, but I do think looking at 5 pound chunks makes it easier and gives one more opportunities to celebrate the losses along the way.
