Ruth, I think that you should make a scarf or shawl…go with the pattern and yarn you like and your granddaughter will figure out what to do with it. Blanket shawls are popular also…so neither shawl or scarf is a mistake. That bubble wrap hat sounds interesting…and I feel very confident that you will be able to turn out the appropriate stitches and that it will look great.
