We are a group of like-minded people that gather to discuss a host of topics from weight loss, to current events. Our thread celebrates liberal diversity, welcomes new friends, and respects all opinions. We count everything from calories to points but, we never count our chickens before they've hatched!

Good morning peeps!
Surprise, surprise! Nothing good happened politically last night. But then we should be thankful that we woke up this morning without being involved in World War III which we preemptively started perhaps with a tweet.
Republicans want to do away with overtime pay. Well, they don't put it exactly that way. The new bill would allow employers to give employees comp time in place of overtime pay. The Rs say this is supposed to be family friendly, allowing employees to have time for doing things with their kids. That sounds nice. Problem is, the employer gets to decide when the employee is allowed to use the comp time, so if little Billy's performance in the school play doesn't coincide with what the employer thinks is the "right" time, then the employee both didn't get his overtime pay AND misses Billy in the school play. Just one more way of favoring big business while shafting ordinary people. And if the employee has been relying on that overtime pay to supplement the monthly income, then that's just too bad. He still gets to work the long hours, but doesn't get to see any benefit from it until the employer determines it will be in the company's best interest for him to do so.

Senate Hearing with Comey testifying = Useless to me if he keeps saying he can't answer anything about Russia & Trump & his staff. He had plenty to say about Hilary tho! Just from the opening statements from Grassley & other GOP questioners they are still more interested in Hilary than ongoing info on Tweety! So why waste time of everyone! UGH... The public will be the last to know whenever those in power choose to let us know & by then damage done & too late!

You're right, Linda, that the Right does not want to know the truth about the Russia connection. They're going through fake motions, but have no intention of actually putting any dirty laundry out there. As for Comey, he's clearly in someone's pocket. He seems to really have it out for Hillary, otherwise, why put his finger on the scale during the election especially when he already knew that Trump's team was under suspicion for Russian connections. He already knew Russia was hacking the emails. He already knew nothing had been found in Hillary's "d*mn" emails as Bernie referred to them, and he had absolutely no idea and even said he had no idea whether there was anything in Weiner's emails. Yet he chose to dump his letter and make his televised statement about Hillary right before the election, and keep completely silent about Trump, Flynn, Manafort, and others especially the one guy who I can't remember his name right now.
I absolutely believe Hillary would be President right now if that had not happened. Of course, she made some mistakes and the biggest mistake was to ever have that private server in the first place. Is it possible she could have lost even without Comey's help? Possible, but not probable. But even if she would have lost the election without the Russian and Comey interference, at least we would have known that she lost the election on her own. And that once again the election was not stolen as it was with Bush/Gore at the SC.
IMHO, we need a grass roots movement for a Constitutional amendment to get rid of the electoral college. Let the popular vote determine who wins. Personally I think the EC is archaic and has outlived its usefulness.

Amen! Amen! And again I say, amen!
When I saw that disgusting piece of junk get all those electoral votes while a true stateswoman (not a perfect person, but not a clueless TV personality who also happens to be a lying, out of control, sexual predator) I swore I'd never vote again. I thought to myself why bother? What does it matter? More people voted for her instead of him and yet he takes the WH! 3 million more people voted for her rather than him but so what? People had to stand in line for hours to cast their vote and all those votes are "deleted" anyway? What a waste of time.

Stephen Colbert is in hot water now for insulting the Orange Oaf. Excuse me? Is there one species on the planet (excluding straight white males) the Oaf hasn't insulted? The Right is acting like, well, snowflakes. "Senate Hearing with Comey testifying"? More like test-a-lying. I'm sick of all the deceit. All lies all the time from just about every Republican in the WH. Either they lie, or they turn their backs and walk away without giving an honest answer. They truly are a deplorable and deceitful lot. It's a little insulting too. Do they honestly think we believe them? And another thing. I mean another lie. So, the EPA purges it's website on climate change. Just like that. *** Poof *** All gone. Climate change? What climate change?

I won't stop voting, but it is truly discouraging. As it is my vote never counts because TN is thoroughly red, so all its EC votes always go to the R. My vote is in that 3 million more popular votes that Hillary received, but it doesn't do a bit of good. It's discouraging, but still I will go and vote and make my voice heard even if it doesn't do any good.
Also looking forward to hearing Colbert's response. If Tweety were a statesman, he would ignore Colbert's remarks; but, then if Tweety were a statesman Colbert and the rest of us would have no need to make such remarks.

A bunch of people are all bent out of shape over a comedian firing back because the Liar-in-Chief looked straight into the face of a journalist and lied, lied, and lied. Right there on TV in front of God and everybody. And yet, when the Liar-in-Chief proudly bragged about groping and grabbing women, not only did a bunch of people turn a deaf ear, they cheered him on instead.
Somebody has to speak truth to power. From where I'm sitting the late night talk show hosts are doing a fine job.
Joyce, I won't stop voting either. Too many women fought for me to have that right. Women like Susan B. Anthony who said, "No self respecting woman should wish or work for the success of a party that ignores her sex."
Some women lost their lives in this fight. No matter how I feel about voting I won't sit it out.

I agree that Colbert's rant was a bit over the top. But homophobic? My gay friends do not think so in fact they loved it.
Talk about snowflakes.
