Ginny, I'm so glad to hear that you are at the lake with your friend and also that you were able to sleep in this morning! Jane sounds like a really nice person and one that is a good quilting partner. Enjoy your time there. Do you go swimming or fishing or anything like that? I really enjoyed my times at NYS lakes when we lived there and have some really nice pictures. We fished and have a picture of a northern pike that my dh held up beside our son who was two at the time. The fish was taller than he was One of us could have started the thread but don't want to just burst in and take over like that. I've been making the rest of the dino parts and probably will wait until tomorrow to put him all together. Dgd sent me an email today telling me what color she would like so I'll get started on that. I'm not sure yet what size I want to make it but probably throw size.

CJ, coloring with crayons sounds like a good way to be able to see how your colors are going together. I want to use maybe three shades of gray and also one of white in my dgd's blanket but I don't have 3 shades in my boxes of crayons so I'm trying to figure out how I can decide how many rows of each to use.I don't want make them all the same width. I'd like a little more creativity than that. I have an equal amount of each yarn or I'd go by what yarns I had the most of It's very, very hot here today . I still prefer summer over freezing winter though and I'm glad we missed the last of winter here this year. We left here in early April and they were still having snow and cold here until the later part of May.

Hello Ginny - I'm glad that you are alright and that you were able to get away to the lake and enjoy time with friends. Ruth - I have found that I've used my crayons a lot to try to figure out color combinations. I hope you can figure out what colors to use on your DGD's blanket. Phyl and Sue - Hope you are well. It was cooler here today, low 80s and sunny. I wish it would stay that way It's much easier to keep the house cool at that temperature. I finished piecing the top together using that modified keyhole block and I'm pretty happy with how it came out. I would like a border on it, but since I don't have any fabric that I think would look good I'm just going to leave it as it is. It was just a fun way to show off some fabrics and use a layer cake. I'll post a picture soon. I've been looking around at quilt pictures again and found several quilts I would love to make. There are just so many of them, but not enough time This is the one I saw today that I would just love to make: www.quilteddelights.com/2017/04/summer-sunset-finished.htmlAnd also the one on this page called "Charming Stars" - she did it in fall/autumn fabrics - you need to scroll down some to see it: www.quilteddelights.com/search?q=charming+starsBut first I need to finish my Moda blocks for the week. The new clue for the Oh Say Can You Sew quilt along came out today and I'm not sure I'm going to be able to do it. We have to make 1152 1.5 inch half square triangles I bought her triangle paper that she recommended for it, but I'm just not sure I'm up to making that many. I guess I'll try some and see how it goes. Worst case scenario I could just substitute another block for that part of the quilt. Here's a link for her YouTube to see today's clue: www.youtube.com/watch?v=a6yjSs4dJP4I love that quilt on the wall behind her. Hope you are all getting to do some crafting too. Take care

Good evening, Ruth- craig fishes a lot- which is why I am here to keep Jane company. We have hiked a lot- and just hung out. It’s been nice just being able to be with her without time constraints. Now I am forgetting what you posted- but I have not swam or fished at all, but I could have.
CJ - good to hear that you are making progress on the keystone quilt. That other quilt is gorgeous! Very dramatic but lots of different fabrics and pieces. It would be an interesting quilt to make with the many different colors.sure would be nice if they sold a kit of the fabrics to make it easier to duplicate the look.
It’s been a bit cooler up here- I know I will be returning home in the heat.
Phyl and Sue- hope you are doing well Ginny

CJ, all those quilts look very difficult and there's no way in the world that I would make that many tiny half squares. They are beautiful though and would be worth the time for someone who really likes them.I'm sure it's something you could do easily which I base on having seen a lot of the quilt tops you have posted here. And yes, that quilt on the wall behind the speaker is very nice.I like it a lot
Ginny, well I'm sure Jane appreciates you going with them so that she has someone to keep her company without having to go fishing with her dh. People don't often think of NYS as having very beautiful places to hike, camp, fish, etc but it certainly does. I bet that Jane wishes you would stay longer or are all of you going home tomorrow?
I didn't start dgd's blanket yet because I worked on my Christmas blanket instead and also did some on the Japanese knot bag I've been working on a little every day.I'll be up awhile longer so I might start dgd's blanket since I just ran out of the Christmas blanket yarn and don't want to have to go upstairs to get more.An hour ago it was still 93 degrees in my upstairs so I'm staying down here where it's cooler and where I do have the yarn for that afghan.
See you all tomorrow.Safe driving Ginny.
Sue and Phyl, I hope you both had a good day.

Hello Everyone - Hope you are all doing well and having good weather. Ginny - I'm glad you've been enjoying the getaway and cooler weather I would love to buy a kit of those fabrics for that quilt - the hardest thing sometimes is picking the fabric! That's a project for the future maybe. I might try that other one with the 9 patches of fabric and the white star in the center, I think that would be easy to make. Ruth - Sounds like you have lots of fun projects going on right now. I'm glad you have a place you can stay in the house where it's cooler. I've had the temps in mine get up in the high 80s, but I don't think as high has 93! That would be miserable. I went out earlier to get some groceries and then came home and made the Moda Blockheads extra block from next week, so I'm caught up for tomorrow. In the picture I'm posting the last block is the purple and yellow star at the bottom. I'm also showing a picture of the landscape fabric quilt. This quilt goes together very quickly. I think I'll make another one using a jelly roll sometime. I did try to make some of the small half square triangles and got 30 of them made. I really don't think I'll be able to make 1152 of them. Since we have to make 182 blocks, I may try to make 182 of them and just put one small one in the center of a square. I'll have to see how they fit into the quilt. I wish she hadn't made this big clue, but it's her quilt along Take care!

CJ- that sunset quilt is so pretty. I just checked out the picture of it and it does appear to be made with solids. (Wonder if Kona solids would work). I would not attempt to use a patterned or even a tonal print for it as the colors playing on each other and a patterned fabric might not work as well. A batik might work, but then that also has its own pattern. I wonder if someone else has posted pictures of this quilt, so you can evaluate the pretty design with different fabrics. I know you like to use fabrics you already have, but this might be one quilt that you purchase a lot of the fabric for. I am sure that either a quilt shop or Joanns would assist with the fabric for the quilt,
Ruth, is it any cooler in your area today? (Hint hint, drink that water). Hope you were able to finish the knot bag. NY is funny state, and many people think that its all NYC and that the rest of the state is all city. It could not be farther than the truth. Upstate is gorgeous and I think that 52% of the state is Adirondack Park which is pristine and lovely.
And its hot here- tomorrow is supposed to be worse.

Since I'm not a quilter I wouldn't be able to comment on how fabrics go together but in crocheting there are patterns that don't work with certain yarn color combos such as variegated yarns. The stitch pattern gets lost.I'm sure this is also one of the criteria when choosing quilt fabric also
Yes the Adirondack area is extremely beautiful and I love it. I loved going to the Saranac Lake/ Lake Placid area and there were other areas within that park that were wonderful also. I always thought I'd love to own my own island there with a nice log cabin.I loved the smells of the pines and other natural fragrances of nature. Of course then there are the winters which are very cold with massive amounts of snow so you wouldn't want to be on one of those islands in the winter.
This diagonal basket weave stitch has been a huge pain in my neck. I think I've got it now though. My grandchildren continue to expand my knowledge of various stitches as they request, without knowing, the hardest patterns and the ones I've either not done before or have done and didn't like. At first I was working from only a written pattern that made no sense to me. I finally caved and went to youtube to see if anyone had a video for it and thankfully they did. I still didn't get it at first but you know what they say about trying again.
Have a great day everyone

Hello Everyone - Hope you are all doing well today and staying cool. It was hot here and tomorrow is supposed to be worse. Ginny - It is funny how people think of different places. I know that NY is a very varied state with many regions, and it's very beautiful. Maryland is like that too. We have the western part of the state that is so pretty and then the Eastern Shore which is very different, the same with Southern Maryland and Central Maryland. If I ever decided to make that quilt, I'd take my time picking the right fabrics. I have too many other patterns and fabrics ready to make, so I need to avoid temptation Ruth - I hope you are enjoying learning the new stitches and I'm glad you found someone on YouTube to help with the current stitch you are using. Phyl and Sue - Hope you are well. I had hoped to make the two Summer Camp blocks this morning, but after another night of waking up every few hours I slept late and the phone woke me up from a sound sleep. I sure would like to have one morning where I wake up naturally instead of due to other reasons! I did get the fabrics picked for both blocks and the pieces cut, so I just need to sew them together. I might try to do that tonight, or if not in the morning. I can't really use my sewing room during the afternoon and evening because I would have to disconnect the portable AC and that's just irritating. I won't leave it on when I'm not in the room with it for safety reasons (and other reasons I won't go into here). The Laundry Basket quilt along is basically over too. I wanted to wait until today to see her color picture of the full quilt before I lay it out to start piecing. I want my quilt to look exactly like hers. This week's Moda Blockheads block isn't too bad either and I know what fabrics I want to use, just need to get the Summer Camp quilts done before I get to it. It will be a relief to be done with three quilts soon. That will leave me with one weekly (that ends in September) and three monthly (Rainbow Scrap Challenge (ends in the fall), Oh Say Can You Sew (ends in September) and Melodic Melody - since I did decide to do this one). This way I can focus on some of my own projects and I have many that I want to make I have gotten some hand quilting done this week and I'm finished with half of the center portion of my medallion quilt. Take care everyone!

CJ,Idon't now how you manage to get so much done! And I do agree about leaving the a/c on. We don't even leave our fans on when we're not in the room. Not because of electrical use but because you never know what can happen with electrical appliances. It sounds like a lot of your QAL's are over or close to being over. You'll definitely have to find more that you like. And I'm sure you'll get a lot of the crafting you want to get done that you've been thinking of doing,
I may have to work on my Christmas afghan this evening. I worked a lot of the basket weave and it's nearly 9:30. The Christmas one is a cal and most people have all five parts done. Having five parts done doesn't make for a very large afghan so many people are probably going to repeat the sections multiple times. I still don't even have part one done yet but I'm close. This, also is something I haven't done before but it's turned out to be easy since I'm doing it all in one color. Many are using different colors for the bobbles but not only is it easier to work with just one color but I think it's prettier that way also esp with this metallic sparkly yarn

Good morning!!
Ruth, I forgot that the one afghan you were working on was a Christmas afghan. Are you hoping to make a larger afghan (who is this one for - maybe even for you!). The good part is that it is not a very large afghan, which does mean that it can be more easily, but I like the option to repeat the parts to make a larger afghan. Congrats on mastering the diagonal basket weave pattern. If only your grandkids knew the effort it took to figure it out and thankfully someone saw the need and made a youtube video. But its a labor of love, and while its an effort to learn a new pattern its nice to know how much your family appreciates your work.
CJ- that sure stinks that you had such a disrupted night of sleep. I am hoping to hear that when you check in we learn that you slept well last night I am happy for you that the intense season of making 3 weekly quilt alongs is drawing to a close. It seemed as though you had some fabrics that you really wanted to use and these quilts accomplished just that. I am glad to hear that you were able to get the fabrics cut and ready to make the next blocks- hope you are able to wake up naturally this morning and get upstairs to get to your machine.
Ruth, as far as fabric selection goes, its really no rocket science. Many times the quilter will select one fabric as a key fabric and then find coordinating fabrics based upon the colors used in the key fabric. That sunset quilt that CJ is considering making is a different story, but as that is a progression of colors from a bright yellow center to darker (think blue) colors on the outside- and doing that in solids or a batik would be perfect. If using patterned fabrics they suggest using one large print (and that might be the fabric you use as an inspiration for the other colors in the quilt) a medium sized print and a smaller print. Its the different sized prints in one quilt that keep it interesting to the eye, but of course not all quilts/designs/fabrics lend themselves to that.
I spent one semester of college (many years ago) at Purdue University in Indiana (what a mistake that was!). I lived in NJ with my parents at the time and when asked where I was from, always mentioned my home state. NJ is a small state….and believe it or not, many did not know where it was. So I had to mention that it was near NY. Upon hearing that a large percentage of people thought that meant I was some horrible person, knowing that NYC had a horrible crime problem then (which has returned). Little did any of those people know that NY is a large state and many sections are very very rural.
I hope to finish cleaning the closet I started working on yesterday and sit down with my machine later on.
Hi to Phyl and Sue

Ginny, I've run into that same scenario. Back in 2004 we bought a "fishing shack" in Arkansas. I've mentioned it before I know. Anyway when we mentioned where we were from no one knew where Wyoming is. Then we said we were originally from NY and all the nice southerners looked at us like we were bringing the plague to them. After that many of them became very good friends of ours and sadly many are no longer with us.
I made a mistake on the Christmas afghan. I said there were five parts but there are actually nine parts. I forget what she said the size will be when completed. She used dk weight yarn but I'm using worsted weight so mine will be larger. I don't know who I'll give this too. Being that it's metallic yarn it does have little scratchy flecks so is best used as a decorative item rather than a real afghan or blanket. It's white so can't give it to the neighbor because he already mentioned his daughter giving them a white chair, mentioned that he didn't think much of that, and said that white is not a good color for his home as he has a lot of cats.
Today is hot again so I'll probably just sit and crochet in front of my fan. I currently have five projects going. I'm hoping to finish a couple of the smaller ones today and need to get busy on some hats although I do have a large bag full for donating already. Still there is a large need and will be even more of a need with our economy like it is.
