Ginny, I don't know what the prognosis is for my neighbor. Last he told me was that the doctor told him not to worry that they would get him through. That was before the scans that showed he needed chemo. He, like many other, don't ask questions and don't find out what type of cancer they have. Example is my cousin who had lymphoma and when I asked her what kind she said she didn't know there was more than one kind. So I'm sure my neighbor doesn't know what kind of breast cancer he has and probably doesn't even know what the reason, in detail is, for the chemo or what kind of chemo he's receiving. I haven't talked to him yet., just heard from the other neighbor that he's on chemo.I wanted to wait until this blanket is made but I think I do have to talk to him before that. I just hate calling people or stopping over at their house because they may not feel like talking or visiting,

Good morning!
CJ, the blocks are so pretty, and you did a nice job piecing them - sure looks like you paper pieced fo me! Your corners are clean and crisp. I read your saga about stitch size and your machine sighed. I was with my friend last night and she has been working on finishing a quilt that she started a year ago. She had some machine issues, mostly because she does not get to work on her quilting a lot and had to refresh her knowledge of it. ( I ran into that predicament when I made the label for my DBIL’s quilt). Anyway, love the quilt blocks. According to the news the heat has broken for you also, Hope you have gotten some cooler evenings, which will help cool down your house. This sure has been a warm summer.
Ruth, when my sister in law was battling cancer, DH and I were a bit surprised at how little she and her family knew of her illness. Its great when you trust your doctor, but I also think its a good idea to engage in treatment if possible. I hope that your neighbor beats this, he sounds like a very special person. Love the colors you will be using for his afghan which will make a nice contrast against each other. I am looking forward to hearing how MM resolves your yarn issue and maybe gives you a credit toward another purchase.
Got to a county fair with my family yesterday. It was hot, but not as super hot as it had been. Of course I went to see the lovely quilt display, voted for my favorite and checked out others handiwork. DGD mentioned that her favorite was a split rail - which I told her was easy to make (knowing that a jelly roll would be used). Perhaps I can help inspire another quilter….I am dropping off my machine to have it serviced. It does have one tiny issue with a thread guide that is hard to load the thread into (which should take him a minute to solve). The rest of it should be nothing more than a deep cleaning and lubrication. Yes I regularly clean the lint from my machine but do not want to take the machine completely apart for fear I will damage it.
At the fair, someone had on display a similar patriotic panel quilt. The quilting was magnificent, it appeared that the quilter sewed small lines of quilting along each of the eagles feathers, and the stripes in the flag. Its hard to describe but gave great motion to the quilt and an impressive job of quilting. Because the quilting lines were a bit uneven (again to impart motion to the quilt) I figure it was done by free motion work and not a long arm.
Gotta get myself moving to pack up my machine and drop it off.
See ya later GInny

Ginny, that quilt sounds amazing with all the hand sewn quilting in it. Your's is also. Years ago we used to go to county fairs. I think we've one gone once since we moved here which was close to 32 years ago. It's always so hot at fair time. We also went to whatever they called the fairs they had in Toronto, Ontario. I do remember once going to the Erie County fair and being there in the evening when they had Herman's Hermits concert. We didn't have tickets but from where we were standing we could see the whole thing. We never really attended those events.
If I had a serious illness and didn't have much of a medical background I'd be looking online to find out all the details and to find out what questiions I needed to ask. I think it might be a form of denial to avoid educating yourself on your illness. Older people especially seem to have a problem with questioning care providers. In the old days we were led to believe that we just trust the doctors without question. The doctors themselves decided whether or not to tell you when they found you had cancer. I remember in nursing school I was doing a rotation in the operating room and they were doing a biopsy on the breast mass in one of the nurses that worked at that hospital and discussing how to keep her from finding out it was cancer. They cautioned me not to say anything to anyone at all so that the info wouldn't leak to her. I can't imagine how she wouldn't know. And of course back in those days, early 60's, they didn't have all the chemo drugs and other treatments that are available to us now.

Officially the high yesterday was 101. Broke a 22 year record of 99 for that date. We had an incredible lightening show last night. It looked like someone was out there with a strobe light that was continuously flashing. Not much rain though. Just a few sprinkles. Now they're calling for possible flooding. I doubt there will be enough rain to flood anything.
Well I finally heard from Mary Maxim. They claim the yarn is only slightly textured and "graciously" offered to not deduct the shipping charge from my refund if I wanted to return it. Well there was no shipping charge but there would be for me to return it and to return would be much too difficult. For one thing it came with other yarn in a huge box so I couldn't return in in that one. The charge to return it would probably be more than I paid for the yarn. Also going to the post office is not easy. so no more Mary Maxim orders for me. If they can't stand behind their yarn I don't want any more of it.Any time I ever had a problem with other yarn the company refunded my money or sent a replacement. I'll stick with Joann's or Hobby Lobby from now on.It's not like I tried to scam them. If you saw this yarn you would see what I mean.
At Joann's all I did was sent an email telling them that they needed to wind their Big Twish a different way because what I got was a huge tangle ALL through the yarn.I had to wind it in a ball from the outside so I could use it. They immediately credited me with the cost of the yarn and I didn't even expect or ask them to do that just wanted to let them know that yarn was extremely difficult to work with so they could maybe let the manufacturers know that customers had a problem
Well I'm still working on the prayer blanket. I'm so impatient that I can't wait to get this done and the others done so that I can work start some other things.

Hello Everyone - Hope you are all doing well today Ginny - Sounds like the fair was fun to attend. I used to attend them when I was younger and would love to attend an old-fashioned one. The ones around where I live aren't like they used to be - too suburban now. I hope you DGD does become a quilter someday I've seen some quilt panels that had great quilting on them - machine and hand. I've thought about trying hand quilting a panel sometime. Ruth - Sounds like it is really hot there, I hope it gets cooler for you soon. Sorry to hear about the customer service issue with Mary Maxim, they don't realize how important it is to keep good customers. Hope you can get the prayer blanket done soon. Phyl and Sue - Hope you are getting to do some crafting. It is finally cooler here today after some storms a few days ago, and the weekend is supposed to be nice too. I'll enjoy having the windows open for a bit. I went out for groceries and a few other errands yesterday and when I came home there were two fawns in my yard. I guess my yard must be a safe place for them since it's fenced and I rarely go outside. I do hate for them to be around the busy road I live on though. I went outside earlier and sprayed some weed-b-gone in an area where all this grassy weed is growing. I wish I felt like pulling it, but it's beyond me. I was thinking I'd pay someone $100 just to pull those weeds - it probably wouldn't take an hour to do it. But you can't get anyone to do anything like that anymore. I finished the binding on the table topper I quilted the other day and I'm satisfied with the final quilt, even though I did want to see those longer stitches for the quilting I also pulled out all my orange fabric scraps and decided which ones I want to use for blocks for this month and hope to get them cut and pieced this weekend. Then I'll just have two things that need to be done this month - cutting fabric for that monthly mystery quilt and making small HSTs to make into small blocks. I really think I'm not going to be able to finish this task and I'm going to have to substitute my own design in place of these. I just can't see myself making over 1000 1.5 inch half square triangles and then making them into a small 9 patch block - we need to make 128 of the blocks. If I had know this was coming I wouldn't have started this quilt along. At least I do have the other 31 larger blocks made and could just use them in a quilt top. I guess I'll see what next month brings. Take care everyone!

I'm feeling somewhat stalled. The hot weather is keeping me from outside activities unless it's early in the morning or late when the sun is almost down.
I've misplaced or lost my driver's license, and replacing it is more complicated mplicated than renewing it. It's amazing how many places need to see it. Even the supermarket where I've shopped for 28 years asked for it after never asking for it. The last time I saw it was on June 15 when I went to the funeral home. I very carefully put it in my purse, but it wasn't there when I looked for it three days later.
When I renewed my license in April, all I needed was my old license. Now, since I don't have it, I need all sorts os birth certificates and name change documentation which I don't have. This is a good example of why women should keep their maiden name.
When I hit my head and had the MTBI about seven years ago, I found that the repetitive crocheting of the same stitch was very healing and helped restore muscle memory. I had read about several other cases about that time.
When I'm tired or under stress, I have some of the same issues I had seven years ago. Making the scarf helped me, so I'm starting another one. Same yarn with multiple colors, but these are soft blues and greens that give a totally different look. It seems to be helping.

CJ, I can't imagine making over 1000 tiny blocks...even 100 of those blocks would be beyond anything I would want to do. It's great that you are very creative and will end up doing something really great with the blocks you already have. I'd be worried too about fawns in my yard if I lived in on a busy street. I hope they will be ok.
Sue, Yes the repetitive motion involved in crocheting is very therapeutic. Your new scarf sounds beautiful. I don't get up early enough in the morning to do outside things and in the evening there are too many mosquitoes which love to bite me.
Well I had written back to MM and told them that as an elderly woman I find it extremely hard to go out and to get to the post office is a major inconvenience for me. Plus the fact that I don't have a box the size I would need.I also told them that I was disappointed that they were not more customer friendly. I was nice about it. They sent a reply telling me that the supervisor told them to tell me just to dispose of the yarn and they will give me a refund.I would think that they would give you a credit instead thus insuring that you would buy more yarn but whatever. I'll use the yarn for the hats and baby things to donate. Discarding it just seems extremely wasteful and since it's acrylic, not good for the environment.

HI, just keep tugging away at he basement little by little, one day it will be back to NORMAL!(I HOPE)I am starting to see the top of my cutting table. lol.
Yesterday we went to DECORAH ,I took my machine in to be serviced. now it should purr like a kitten.
they told us it would take about 2 hours.
so we drove to the quilt shop iN PRAIRIE DU CHIEN ,WI . spent some time there didn't find much this time. just before we left the shop to go eat, they called and said the machine was done.so off we go again.
we picked up the machine and put it in the car, walked across the street to the ice cream shop, ate our ice cream and came home
think I only spent a little over $20.00 in each shop..some days you can find a lot of things some days you can't. even Don says I WILL BE DEAD BEFORE I HAVE ALL MY PROJECT S DONE..you girls don't know how many times I HAVE THOUGHT THAT.
Wednesday we had a great time with our friends. spent about 5 hours together.sat in the restaurant for about 2 hours or so,then the park the rest of the time, beautiful park.BOTH DON'S get along so good.phyl

Good morning! Phyl- glad you were able to get your machine serviced. Sounds like you and Don had a lovey day.
Ruth I think MM is gently telling you that they just do not want the yarn back and therefore explaining why they do not want the yarn back.
CJ- yikes that is a lot of tiny pieces to cut. And I think a panel quilt would be an excellent quilt to work on by hand.
Sue- sorry you misplaced your license and I hope it shows up!!! Yes this summer has been awfully hot. I am so thankful that cooler temps are coming to my area.
With my machine gone, I will be working on finishing the binding by hand. Later Ginny

Hello Everyone - Hope you are all doing well and having a nice day with good weather Sue - I'm happy to hear that making the scarf helped with your stress. I find that crochet, hand quilting, and sometimes embroidery does that for me too. I hope that you can find your driver's license or else that you can get all those documents together to get a new one. I remember it was a hassle finding all those documents when I had to get my new one a few years ago. I was afraid I'd never find my original Social Security Card but fortunately I did. I had some relatives that had trouble getting those marriage documents too. Phyl - Sounds like you have been having some nice times out and with friends. I'm glad you were able to get your machine serviced so quickly. I'll never make all the projects I want to either Ruth - I'm glad MM will give you a refund. It's a shame we have to push so hard to get a business to treat us well as customers. Ginny - Hope you can make some progress on the binding this weekend and that you are having the nice weather I'm having. It's really pretty here, around 80 and sunny with a nice breeze. I have a few windows open and just the fan on. I think the next several days are supposed to be the same temperatures but maybe with some rain. I haven't seen the fawns in the yard again, but I'll keep an eye out for them. When I saw them the other day they were hiding under my fig tree/bush. There are a lot of figs on it this year but none are ripening so far. I hope that some will get ripe so I can eat them. I accomplished a lot in my sewing room this morning. I decided to go ahead and pull out my brown, black and gray fabric scraps (since that was all that was left after orange) and I've cut all the pieces needed for my monthly blocks and then from what was left I cut them up into the sizes that I save. I hope to get the blocks made tomorrow. This is the end of all the scraps I'd saved by color, although I do still have a bag of white and cream fabric scraps. So now I have a large bag of 2.5 inch strips, a box of 2.5 inch squares, a bunch of 5 inch squares and a large bag of pieces that I cut at 4.5 inches long, but the widths are anywhere from less than 2.5 inch to 1.5 inches. I'm thinking that I need to go through these and just make them all at least 2 inches wide and throw out the smaller ones. Then I could make a Chinese Coin quilt: maryquilts.com/chinese-coins-quilts/easy-chinese-coins-2/It felt really good to have all those scraps of colored fabrics organized, since I've been working at it for a few years now. Of course now I'll have 5 quilt tops to put together I also decided to end my participation in the Secret Lives of Color quilt along. I wasn't really doing it like it is supposed to be, so I'm going to stop with the 16 blocks I have made and sew them together into a small quilt. Getting all these things done and decided on have helped me feel less like my quilting was a job and now I can get it back to feeling like a hobby Hope you all get to do some crafting this weekend

Well in the first email they almost insisted I send the yarn back.It was only when I told them that would be too much of a problem for me to do that they told me to discard it and they would issue a refund
Today is my dh's birthday and as usual his one cousin called to tell him Happy birthday. She's the only one in his family that does. He never hears from his sisters or mother who, to my knowledge is still alive although she must be 100 by now.
I'm still working on the prayer blanket. It will be a small throw size I think. I made it this size mostly because I've been told it's always cold where you receive chemo so he might want to take it with him. I did think that I had made it wider but forgot that crystal wave pulls the yarn in making it narrower
CJ, I know that feels wonderful having all those fabric pieces organized and mostly used and I'm so glad you found a way to make quilting an enjoyable hobby rather than something you're compelled to do
Phyl, glad to hear you had a good time with friends

Ruth, its a shame that Mary Maxim caused such confusion for you. Do you think you will be able to use it for another project? And I do not blame you for not wanting to do business with them, guess I envision a credit as being a more equitable situation instead of just telling you to discard the yarn and a refund. Guess their response is appropriate and if they issue you a refund, then you do not have to do business with them again. Happy Birthday to your Dh! How different families handle birthdays is such an individual response- I hope that your adult children contacted or messaged him to wish him a happy birthday. The prayer blanket sounds perfect for your neighbor- and its a thoughtful thing to make that for him.
CJ- cooler temps are such a blessing….and I am so very happy that the heat has broken. The Chinese count quilt sounds like a lovely and colorful project! Do you have an idea what fabrics you will be using to make that? I am so glad to hear that you are finding joy in quilt making again and looking forward to working on a quilt. Think this hobby of ours is supposed to be fun….not something we have to do.
Sleep tight !! Ginny
