Did this all start from a spider bite, or is there something else going on?

From 7/28 (I knew I'd read that it was a toenail): I went to urgent care this morning, I have cellulitis in both feet, and infected toenail (initial cause) and a rash on my arms and legs. ahem... the rash is probably my own doing since I self medicated with keflex and augmentin the last 7 days -probably caused a minor allergic reaction. She would have "dug out" the ingrown toenail but she was concerned with my circulation and potential for diabetes (runs in the family).

diva49 but then they later thought spider bite. Not sure but at this point it probably was they were red and inflamed (making her think infected toenail) but in actuality it was whatever it is she has. Honestly I thought that it was odd she had it in both feet from an infected toenail/ spider bite. That doesn’t usually spread from one extremity to another.

And all those med allergies are just muddying up the diagnostic waters. Doubling up on the prayers...

Wow! Thanks for the info.
I agree, it's weird that it's in both feet. Cellulitis is normally from an infection- spider bite or toenail could both cause it. But again it normally stays in that area.
Whatever it is, I hope they can help her and find some relief. Lots of love and prayers

I agree, it's weird that it's in both feet. Cellulitis is normally from an infection- spider bite or toenail could both cause it. But again it normally stays in that area. Old ICU RN here. Cellulits is usually caused by a bacterial infection and can spread via the bloodstream. It can become systemic, affecting the whole body. If there is poor circulation to extremities (especially the lower legs) it can affect both legs/feet at the same time. We had many patients end up in our ICU with cellulitis resulting in systemic infections---many were diabetic, immune-suppressed, and/or had circulatory issues. Even a tiny little scrape can allow the causative bacteria to enter through the skin and wreak havoc with people that may be compromised by other problems. Holding Rene in my thoughts and prayers and wishing her a speedy recovery.... (((RENE)))

fullmahina, Thanks for the info. I know my brother, dad and MIL all dealt with cellulitis in their legs. We were always told it was because of their weight (all morbidly obese) and skin break down. I'm learning that didn't help but it can get anyone. You're right it's really nasty and can wreak havoc. Lot's of prayers for Rene!

I'm learning that didn't help but it can get anyone. You're right it's really nasty and can wreak havoc. Being overweight can definitely be a contributing factor and no doubt is an issue with healing. But it can and does happen to those who are not overweight and the healing process is often long and complicated for many with cellulitis. Of course in ICU we saw the patients where things had advanced to a point where the effects had become systemic and not limited to the original area of infection.Treatment can become very involved, hence the need for ICU placement. And yes---lots of prayers for Rene!! She is often in my thoughts...
