fullmahina, I was facing becoming diabetic and my friend's cousin was dying from diabetes, and it scared me so much. I have problems with depression and the thought of facing diabetes when I knew I could avoid it focused me on learning how to do this for the rest of my life. As lani, said the book: The Beck Diet Solution really helped me. It teaches you to talk back to your sabotaging thoughts to keep you on plan. What helps is I still go to meetings each week and I track and weigh and measure. I don't have a big social life so I'm not often exposed to temptations (keep trigger food out of the house). My involvement in online support groups such as these boards also helps. I'm going to be 76 soon and aging can be hard on your body so I'm thankful I've kept the weight off because how difficult it would be with the added weight.

About going to the meetings: I lost weight on WW in 1992 and 1996 and gained it back and more both times. Both times I quit meetings when I started to gain. Didn't understand this is an ongoing process. This time when I started, I promised myself I would keep the meetings up no matter what, even if I gained weight back. About the Beck Book: When I started this time, I knew part of my problem was my short-circuited thinking that led me to overeat. When I heard about The Beck Diet Solution by Dr. Judith Beck on the old WW message boards and her idea about sabotaging thoughts, I knew it was for me. One reason I do things like the Beck board and my maintenance thread is because once I was being successful, I thought it would be nice to have support when maintenance got rough. The first two times I didn't think of meetings as support.
Oh, and until this time I didn't grasp the idea that this was for the rest of my life.

Judy, I hope you don't mind that I'm lurking over at your Beck threads - I'm having a heck of a time getting into a losing mindset and I'm sure I'm a victim of my own self-sabotage!

finreporter, Lurkers are welcomed. The first day of the Beck program Dr. Beck asks you to write up a list of the advantages of you losing weight, and then have you read it every day.

Judy, I just read your post about the Beck plan. Thank you for sharing. I suffer from depression too. Right now I'm following the tools from Psychiatrist Phil Stutz's book. There's also a documentary about him on Netflix too. He says 80% of early therapy gains come about through taking care of our body first, like diet, exercise, sleep. I am going to lurk on your Beck thread. Thank you for your honesty. It made me brave enough to admit my depression.

bbbearsmom, I have the Beck book and tried to get through it a while back but it just did not resonate with me at the time. It's still on my bookshelf and I might give it another try, especially after seeing it so highly recommended by you. I understand how seeing others in failing health can inspire us to do something about our own. Friends and relatives (some younger than I) seem to be falling apart at a record pace lately---diabetes, cancer, heart disease, renal failure, disabling arthritis, Parkinson's, etc, etc, etc. I had a physical last month and the only issue with my labs was a slightly low Vitamin D level. Totally grateful for this but I fully realize that the extra weight I am carrying is starting to cause issues that only losing weight can cure. Thanks for your input and again, congratulations on your weight loss and maintenance!

sheryl4pointsplus, I had to change psych meds before I could get my act together to do WW. I still worry about a change in my depression and/or meds messing me up again. But it has been 15 years and I do a lot more now about how to lose weight and keep it off.
