159. If youβre a woman capable of becoming pregnant, you should consume 400 micrograms of folic acid from a supplement or fortified breakfast cereal. This B vitamin is known to reduce the risk of certain birth defects by at least 50% when consumed before conception and during early pregnancy.

Okay...none of us are really invested in this comment...or so I thought. I looked up folic acid/folate for seniors and it said that folate is essential for cell growth and they are finding people over 51 should get the 400 mcg per day for mental and physical health...huh.
On the food thermometer thing of yesterday - I have found that they sometimes are "off" and inaccurate. I made candy one time that was to be soft caramel and ended up more like brittle. I advise checking by dipping into boiling water to see just how well calibrated the thermometer is or your results may be off in cooking.

Good point about the timers and accuracy.
I had to take folic acid in conjunction with another medication I was taking. When I stopped the other med I cut the folic acid in half and continue taking it - 500 mcg/day. I try to follow Dr Weil's Anti Inflammatory Diet recommendations when it comes to supplements and he suggests at least 400 mcg of folic acid. Since I may be going back on that medication I will have to increase to 1 mg.
