Welcome to Alcohol Free is What We Want To Be! We are glad you are here with us! If you have been struggling with your weight and have found this board you undoubtedly have your own unique, complicated relationship with alcohol and food. Laying out the problem honestly can give you the extra push you need to succeed in getting it under control. A few questions for you to think about...do you wake up at 3 AM wondering what did you do? Do you sometimes have no recall of the evening before or do you try to recover your memory of the evening before you even get out of bed? Is your spouse angry with you...or do you simply think that A is taking over too much of your life, affecting your weight loss? These are hard questions but know that you will find understanding, love, encouragement and support on this thread. We are each in a different stage of this journey but you will find others have shared your experiences. There is no judgment, just an acknowledgement that we have been there, done that. This board of great people will support you in your journey.
Some of us have been here for several years, others are new, but all are welcome and if you have visited before but didn't stay, there is still and always a place for you. Don't get overwhelmed, take your time, if something strikes you, respond. We are great at giving advice, whether you want it or not....you will get tough love, if necessary, but you will also find help. We practice positive self-talk and support, we encourage and gently hold each other accountable. We each have stories to tell, share and suggestions to help. We post different challenges during the year. Please join us if you think this is the group for you. You will be glad you did.

New Challenge: Dryuary and beyond! Or Dampuary to begin! January 1 - February 10 (Lunar New Year)
"I look to 2024 with a renewed commitment to Progress” and “Out the Door in 2024” (thanks Cathy!)
Let’s Begin!
Will this be your year? Embrace 2024 with eyes wide open, with accountability, with not just going along, but being the best you can be. For many January 1 is a repeat of a cycle. We may be happy where we are personally, maybe with a bit of tweaking but there remains a niggling if I could just lose those pounds, if I could eat more cleanly, if I could just commit to excercising, could I just get some decent sleep! So let the tweaking and niggling begin to make this year work for us! It will be an adventure and can only enhance us.
Are you ready for this new challenge? If wavering, no matter, join in and take what works for you. Share, enjoy the bonding. But also ask yourself what is holding you back?
How do we kick off the New Year? For many it is the commitment to healthy eating, no drinking and getting into shape. We want to cleanse ourselves of what may be holding us back from being the person we want to be. However, true cleansing does not mean just ridding the body of toxins. We're exposed to harmful substances all the time; they're in our diet (pesticides, microbes, and mercury, to name a few) and the very air we breathe (think disinfectants, deodorizers, and the gasses released by fresh paint). We can choose to eliminate as many of these as possible. But there is also a Spiritual aspect as well. Toxins bring you down. When we eliminate harmful substances from our diet and eliminate as many as possible from our lives, we will feel rejuvenated from the inside out.
During the holidays we can easily overload on food and alcohol as well as the commercialization of the holiday. We may feel inundated with stress and turn to self medication through food and alcohol, and repeat the cycle the next day. The sense of joy and peace that we seek will not be found.
So here we are on the first day of the NEW YEAR! Where will you be a year from today? Will you still be wondering why you are looking for satisfaction through food and alcohol or are you ready to make a change and cleanse yourself of old habits. Let's take the first 40 days of this year to create new habits, cleanse ourselves of old habits, and become the person we know we can be.
From January 1 through February 10 we are challenging ourselves to go without alcohol and cleanse ourselves of habits that make ourselves feel bloated, anxious, and just overwhelmed. For some alcohol issues cannot be manage on your own and this board is here to support you in getting help. This board has posters at many different stages in the journey. Some know that being AF is the way to go, others hope to be AIM, but we are all conscious of the slippery slope that can lead to AIE. We want to feel empowered, not let toxins control us, but let us control toxins.
You will not be kicked out of the challenge because of a slip but understand why the slip, talk about it. Christmas and New Year's may have given you a freedom to overindulge but don't let that continue.
Anytime is a good time to start, there is no magic with a Monday, or starting with the next day since today is lost....but there is some sort of magic with January 1. We are more determined, more open to admitting to our new year resolution because we are all in it together. The trick is to keep that MOMENTUM going and it is a commitment to forty days!
Let's make our living environment a healthy environment. Face it, no matter how motivated, committed you are, on January 1, having alcohol, junk food, trigger foods, in your kitchen is not going to help. Give it away, dump it, GET RID OF IT! Temptation is going to happen. Don't make it easier to give in. You are only kidding yourself when you say I have it in the house for company, for the kids, the just in case.
Assess your kitchen....ask does this help me or hinder me? DO NOT have a sentimental attachment to alcohol or food.....the stuff will still be out there, it does not magically disappear. Remember, this is your health! This is your LIFE!
Let's get going and get those pounds out the door!
Great success vibes to all!

Good morning all! Had a good choir practice last night but I was glad to get home and get in bed. Plan for today is to go see my DB and maybe give DSIL a break for a few hours. He was supposed to have a cardiologist appointment yesterday but couldn't make it. He is dehydrated so getting fluids in him is the priority. I imagine it will be a tough day. I'll check back when I get home this afternoon. Murphy

Hi everyone, Don't know why I hit the home made wine that I am not crazy about, just a stupid day. Too much stress, for starters, DD has to go for a chest x-ray because since her cough for over a month now is causing pain in her upper back. Isabel's iron came back extremely low, now they have to figure why. She has been gluten free so we know it is not the gluten causing it. Then one of my BFFs and her daughter are getting me in the middle of their feud which I don't want to be in the middle of. So after I don't know how many phone calls, I finally caved and just poured 3 times to unwind the day, which still didn't help me sleep. Anyway another lesson that A does not help anything, except bumping up the scale! When am I ever going to learn??? I need to go to DD's to watch the kids while she goes for her x-ray. Will try to get back to personals tonight.
Murphy~ Sending you hugs and prayers. Hope your day is not too difficult with your DB. (((HUGS)))

What a great way to go into the new Year! Happy New Year!
DH & I walked the neighborhood yesterday morning, the weather was great. When we got back I planted the ornamental cabbage/kale in the whiskey barrel and then called one of the travel agents at Globus who helped us book the trip. She was very helpful, answered a lot of questions and made the whole thing easy. The official tour is 9 days from London to Rome but we added 2 extra nights in London to see more sights. We leave on April 24 and return May 5, so excited! After lunch I had some couch time. We heard from the golf cart repair people who gave us a quote for replacing the batteries with no-maintenance lithium for $1000 more. We're going with the lithium, since we've let the regular batteries go dry twice. They have a 5-year guarantee and we'll have a greater range as well. We had grilled fish for dinner with mango salsa and frozen veggies. I went to bed a bit earlier but had trouble falling asleep so I got up to read some more.
It's sunny in the 30's this morning.
Jan- WTG steps 10/11, PU, tiny habits, blue dot, AF on Tuesday, no junk at work. Have fun at knitting. Hope you can get off one or more of your meds, although I think the going thing is that everyone should be on a statin after a certain age. Sorry it was crazy at work with angry people. Hope the sore throat was just from talking to mad people. The crocus in the picture has actually been blooming for a week or so but I kept forgetting to take a picture of it. I've got some daffodils that are about a foot tall with buds. I plan on planting the rhubarb in the ground when the risk of frost is over, fingers crossed that it survives.
Cathy- Yay for having fun at the scone party and going out again.
Vicki- Yay for being down 3# at WI, blood work good, Bible study great. DH doesn't usually check his blood sugar (even though he should) but the cardiologist office called to tell him his non-fasting was over 500! So he's doing better with his diet and keeping a closer eye on it. His primary put him back on Farxiga, along with the other meds he's on.
Murphy- Thanks for getting us started. Glad choir practice was good. Hope you have a good visit with DB.
Liz- Sorry stress made the homemade wine seem like a good idea. Enjoy the grandkids and hope you can stay out of the BFF/daughter feud.

It's such a full schedule today I don't want to leave them short handed but if I'm still bad after a couple hours I'll come home and take a nap. I can give them some hours on Saturday if I need too. I need to get moving and DH is already going on about the Supreme Court ruling this morning. Can't think and need some breakfast. I will check in later when I get home. Hi friends! Amy, I love both of the totd!! I’m sitting in my car because I came early to work to get my email fixed that hasn’t worked since Christmas break. Lo and behold, I’m with an IT man and it works perfectly. Ugh. This always happens, I feel like an old, stupid person! I wanted to make sure it worked in case the student supervisor uses that email to contact me. I think I’m going to the dr office and ask why I haven’t heard back from my Dr about my ultrasound. I’ve emailed them twice. You can’t talk to anyone at the office, their calls go to people overseas. I didn’t workout this am, my partner went early and I was lazy. I’m quite the bundle of sunshine right now! I’ll try to bbl. Prayers for Murphy and Liz and your families.

Hi all. I made it til @ 1 o'clock and then came home. Still felt bad for leaving them because 2 other people were also out. I know the one called in sick, not sure what we're passing around. I slept about 2 hours and now just going to hang out. Don't feel much like eating but we'll see. My throat hasn't gotten any worse, its just the tiredness. Having some tea and just staying warm on the couch. Back to bed early I'm sure. We had some sun and of course today it was warm and nice out. Maybe it will come back for the weekend. Hope you all had a nice day. Jan
Murphy How long did you stay with your DB? Was he able to talk to you much or just resting? I sure hope his wife felt she could leave for a bit and have some time to herself. Has it been warming up around your house?
Carole Hope you could get into the Dr's and find out about your ultrasound. Glad the e mail at least works now so you could get a message.
Liz Stress makes us do strange things. Hope you aren't feeling the need for A today after taking care of the kids and waiting to hear about DD appts. and Isabel's issues. Hugs.
Amy Hope your rhubarb makes it until it can get put in the ground. The rubber tree shoots someone gave me to root are just not looking good, a few leaves dropped off today. May be a failed experiment. yay for having your trip booked and getting a few extra days in London. Are you taking them at the beginning or the end? Glad your new battery will have a 5 year guarantee, you'll be zipping around again soon.
I just realized the challenge ends in 2 more days!! Time sure flies. GL all.

Hi girls. Our instructor for water class wasn’t there today, so another girl and I led it. She instructed, I just yelled out what she said. The class said we made a good team. A friend showed me a new exercise with my arms. It worked, because I sure do feel it! I was up in time to see a beautiful sunrise this morning. While I was looking out the window, I saw a beautiful skunk! It was following some scent, because it had its nose to the ground, and was scurrying! It headed back to the woods, so I didn’t worry about meeting it outside! We had teriyaki salmon with air fried squash and sweet potatoes for dinner. Parchment paper made for easy cleanup!
Jan: So sorry you definitely caught something! Rest is the best thing. At least you could see the sunshine!
Amy: Yay for the new no maintenance battery! I’m glad DH is paying better attention. Sometimes that’s just the wake-up call they need. Your trip sounds so good! I’m glad you booked the extra days. It’s not like you’ll be going back! That’s what I keep telling DH about Yellowstone. We’re going to go on all the excursions I want to. We’re not going to pinch Pennie’s while we’re there!
Carole: Hope you heard from the dr. I made a bunch of appointments today. I have 1 more to make tomorrow.
Liz: Sorry about the wine. Sometimes it’s just so hard to say know! Hope your day went well!
Murphy: I hope your day went better than you thought.
Cindy: Hope you’re feeling better! There’s a lot going round here too.
Cathy: I’m so glad you’re getting out and having fun!

Hi All!
I actually wrote a message last night and then forgot to post quick reply. Must have been out of it. My dentist called and said the teeth were in. I explained I had a cold but if I wasn't coughing she didn't mind. So took sinus meds, headed there and spent an hour. One tooth fit and the second one didn't! HUNH? Not that they will say but I think the technician messed up the mold. The dentist did the new mold, her assistant was on the phone with the lab, sent photos of the problem and they were going to expedite the new mold to the lab. It hurts to have the teeth being torqued out, it hurt to have them put back in, and the mold making makes me feel like all my teeth are being pulled. I didn't cough but breathing was a bit difficult along with a bit of gagging. I was about to say stop with my hand and then the timer went off and the mold was done. It was exhausting and I was not happy about it all. They give me Tylenol before the stuff being done but I took more when I got home. I cancelled the dental surgeon appointment for Friday because he really just wants to check it all out and make sure I'm comfortable with it all. Thankfully included with the already paid $$$.
Murphy, I hope your brother is doing better, baby steps.Prayers. Hope your DSIL was able to take some time for herself. I did order some Elderberry syrup last night to arrive between 4 and 6 AM. It did arrive and I do feel better. I discovered that I had bought Sambucol cough drops awhile back. I'm thinking about maybe a supplement?? Glad choir was good. Thanks for getting us started.
Liz, you have had a very stressful day. Did DD get any answers? Hope she can get rid of the cough. Hope isabel's doctor can come up with a solution for the low iron. I hope you can stay out of the fight between BFF and her daughter. You can't win either way. Hope and prayers and I certainly understand turning to the wine. I drink way too much Fresca.
Amy, glad that DH is taking things seriously! Very happy that the trip has come together and that you had a good person to work with and our taking extra days. Go for it! Glad you were able to get the new (and improved) battery for the golf cart!
Jan, I am so sorry you have gotten what ever is going on. I'm finding Murphy's elderberry recommendation is working! Hope you are feeling better tonight. REST! FLUIDS! I skipped the news today, figure it will all be repeated in the AM.
Vicki, yay for running the water class today! Glad you have new arm exercises that are giving you a workout! Enjoy Yellowstone and make sure you get good accommodations! I have a pair of crystal earrings that DH bought for me while there. DS is 35, soon to be 36.
Carole, I would definitely bug the doctor's office in person for the way and what! I'm always feeling old when there are problems with the computer. Glad your computer is up and running. I watched "The Beekeeper" tonight...the premise being how old people get scammed. Of course Jason Statham kicked everyone's ass, a revenge movie.
Cathy, enjoy time with your friends! It is worth a pound or two, they will come back off! Friends are precious.
DS's friend/kinda boss has two extra tickets for the Mavericks game on Saturday night. One of his friends can't go to the game and gave the two tickets to DS's friend and friend asked DS if we would like to go. DS said yes so friend's Mom is going to drive down and also go....a Moms and Sons date, lol. The seats are about six rows from the floor. The Mavs are playing the Thunder so no stress.
DS and I are in discussions about inviting friend/girl over for Superbowl. Celtics play before. My brother is not doing well and I want to share with her about taking care of Ainsley. Ainsley likes her so that helps but just want to show her where stuff is if that makes sense and also Ainsley remains familiar with her. She has to be at work on Monday morning at 6 AM so that helps.
Think bed is in my near future. Hope everyone had a good to wonderful day. Stay healthy!
Hugs, Cindy
