WELCOME TO REGULAR & NEW POSTERS! This thread is full of encouragement & suggestions. New people, welcome! We encourage you to jump in. One day, one hour, one minute at a time is easier to handle than a week, etc. Lurkers, join in
Our goal is 21 days Binge Free (studies show 21 days to break old habits & start new ones!). Whether we make 21 or one, the point is to learn as we go, replace binges with other things to help us through stressful times. Some days are harder than others & we may slip; that's OK. The Binge Monster is in the shadows waiting to pounce. Hopefully this thread provides inspiration, courage, & support to become a Binge Survivor!
You may see different folks on different "Cycles." A Cycle is a 21 day block of consecutive binge-free days. Stay with us for as many cycles as you'd like.
Everyone's definition of a BINGE is different. The Oxford Dictionary defines a binge as a spree of eating and drinking. To many of us, BINGE is defined as "eating without dignity." The dictionary defines "dignity" as a calm and serious manner or style, showing suitable formality or indicating that one deserves respect. Only you can define what a binge is for you. Going over points, as long as it was done with dignity and journaled (therefore acknowledged and "owned") isn't binging--it is up to you to decide.
SPECIAL THANKS TO LESLIE5609 for starting this challenge on the Out of Control Board, in August '02, and thanks to all who keep it going

C75D7, no exercise.
Edesia – Yes, I had the feeling a chapter on nutrition was coming because she hints at it along the way. I look forward to hearing what she has to say on the subject. My food choices up to now have been about nutrition and points. What I haven’t been thinking about much is enjoyment and that’s my primary change right now, i.e. substituting points for enjoyment while remaining conscious of portion size. Let’s use yesterday’s (well Friday’s) mini meals 2 and 4 for examples. Mini meal 2 was my cauli/carrot mixture, cabbage and unsweetened applesauce. Mini meal 4, on the other hand was angel hair pasta and marinara sauce with a burger and a large salad. The pasta was Barilla, not whole wheat, and 2 oz. The marinara was Classico Tomato and Basil. The burger was 93% (no bun) and 2 oz. The salad was all green except for shredded carrots but with 2 T Wishbone Wine Vinagrette dressing and 2 tsp olive oil. Before I probably would have had zucchini noodles instead of the spaghetti and a FF dressing instead of the Wine Vinagrette. So, as you see, I’m still feeling my way. The idea for me is to pay more attention to enjoyment but not as an excuse to pig out. Your thoughts?
Kathy – minus 43?? Yikes. I see you’ve gone back to D1. I’m really curious how you describe a binge. I’m guessing it might be more stringent than necessary.
Louise – I’m with you. Saturday is normally my shopping day (groceries) but I couldn’t get into clearing the car, so I stayed put. Maybe today or if not definitely Monday.
Lori – I finally made the Quest Microwave cake. You’re right, it’s huge for the point value. I’m not sure I really loved it, but certainly a lot of bang for the buck. Maybe I'll add a packet of Splenda next time. It will be interesting to hear your reaction to the book.
Amy – I joined this board seven years ago, almost to the day. It’s been life changing for me. I too am a life member and have weighed in monthly with very few exceptions, at goal for the past 5 years. What our BFFs have in common, unfortunately, is that binging seems to be in our DNA. But as a group, we’ve been experimenting in ways to reduce the extent and the frequency of these binges. I learned, for example, that the more nutritionally I ate, the lower the likelihood of a binge. Together we read Dr. Judith Beck’s book “The Beck Diet Solution: Treat your Brain to Think like a Thin Person” and found it extremely helpful. Now we’re discussing another book, “Intuitive Eating” by Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch – and about how to avoid the diet mentality altogether. I’m particularly interested because lately I’ve been binging more often, having a hard time getting my weight back to goal. It seems I’ve again hit the “on again, off again mentality” for some reason. I’m working very hard with the help of my BBFs to turn the tide. I really hope you’ll stay with us. I have a feeling you’ll fit right in and have a lot to contribute to our discussions. Welcome!!
Beth – Mmmm you bring back memories. My mother used to make an outstanding apple crisp. Do you serve it warm with whipped cream or maybe cool whip?
Louise – I actually like the rain after a snow because it clears our cars for us as well as the driveway.
Tomorrow morning I'm going to have oatmeal with both raisins and cashews. That would have been forbidden if I were counting points. We're having pot roast and potato pancakes with apple sauce for dinner, so I'll take it easy on the other two mini meals.

Good morning! We have a swim meet that's about an hour away today. It's the one that was rescheduled from last weekend at the Olympic training facility. It will be shorter than originally scheduled since several teams were unable to attend the new date. That's fine with me.
Nancy, what a great article about breakfast! I do remember the diet you referenced. I know someone who lost a good deal of weight on it. I scanned the article and there doesn't seem to be much science behind if. I'm all for ditching the fat free salad dressings! They have more sugar and sometimes more chemicals than regular dressings. I'll be curious to see how the scale responds to your new way of eating. I bet your weight will drop over the long term as you'll be less inclined to binge.
Amy, welcome! This thread has been a life saver for me. I hope you stick around.

Good Morning BFFs,
Last nights party was so much fun! Enjoyed the dinner, tasted the dessert and danced the night away! Feeling good!
Can't believe Christmas is next week.....today will be all about finishing Christmas stuff. This week I have a Christmas luncheon and an after work party both on Tuesday. I'm planning on making a nice Christmas Eve dinner - beef tenderloin, twice baked potato and roasted Brussels sprouts are on the menu. Christmas Day is a turkey dinner and the 26th is a Lagazna dinner. I find my problem is not the meal but being surrounded by food/desserts all day....so far, I'm happy to say all the holiday snacks at work have not been an issue. I'm not stressing about it, just looking ahead so I know what's coming up...
Nancy, I may not get to read the book until after Christmas but I'm enjoying reading everyone take on it and very interested to hear how you are doing with the changes... Jan, enjoy the swim meet! Welcome Amy!!
Have a great day BFFs!! Lori

Morning, BFF's! By the time I got home yesterday, it was too late to make the dinner I originally thought we would have. It's a complicated recipe of a favorite dish of my DMIL, with lots of parts. I did make the meats that I will need today and will be able to finish up cooking later on. We were kind of at a loss for what to have for dinner, though, and ended up with some American-Chinese because it was quickest and closest. Today's planned food is all healthy. TTYL
Nancy - I'm so happy to hear you talking about adding in some enjoyment. I think of it as a softening around the edges or a slightly more relaxed way of eating. Adding in some cashews along with the raisins to your oatmeal is a perfect example of getting rid of a rule, "Thou shalt not have raisins and cashews together," to increase your enjoyment while not being unhealthy. The more satisfied you are, both nutritionally and mentally, on a consistent basis, the less of a need there will be to seek out things you are missing and then binge. At least that has been my experience over time. I approached changing how I was eating in a similar way to what you are doing. For example, even though I have cut back and choose not to eat dairy regularly, when I want cheese I have some or I will sprinkle on some Parmesan if I'm having meatballs or something. It makes such a big difference to feel like those kinds of things are ok and not forbidden because of my own, self-imposed rule. I honestly believe that if this works out for you, it will be the "cure" for your Columbus visits. I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed.
Beth - Hope you got to get out for PB later on. I was talking to one of my sisters last night to find out what her plans were for the holidays. We were both invited to a Christmas Eve party at a mutual friend's house, but my sister has to work that night. My DBIL (her husband) is Italian and celebrates Christmas. We talked about doing a Christmas/Hanukkah day with lasagna and latkes. Also, thanks for your comments. I do feel happier than I have ever been re: my relationship to food and eating. Always working on healthier, too.
Kathy - OMG on the wind chill. The snow and temps I whine about are practically balmy compared to what you experience. The temps today are supposed to be close to 60. Who knows, maybe the president elect will ensure we all get to experience constant 80 degree weather before the floods and storms kill us all. But I digress...
Louise - Good plan not going out at all. The car cleaning, especially over and over, is a drag. Your dinner sounded yummy!
Lori - Hope you had fun last night. I have my office holiday luncheon this week. It will be at an Italian restaurant. I know there will be lots of options, including healthy ones.
Jan - Good luck to DS! I agree about fat free dressings. Fat free anything, usually. Way too many chemicals.

Hi all. I'll do personals tomorrow while tonight I contemplate Nancy's question about what I call a binge and chuckle over Edesia's hopes for the Pres. Elect and weather!

C26D6 G8Y4R5 22 SP Treat count remains 23/35 no treat today 5490 steps 5 FP Dedicated walk 3188 steps 40 minutes Stretching 2 FP 23 minutes
Another good food day but I definitely need to shop tomorrow. All of my fruits and veggies were veggies today. I was getting Bartlett Pears but even if they feel a little bit soft have mushy areas inside. I picked up some fresh cut pineapple a few weeks ago and may try some of that again.
Because of the rain and lower temperatures this morning I decided to wait for the 5 PM mass. It was in the 40s but there's still ice covering the ground. It's now on it's way back down with the low tomorrow morning forecast for 6 and the high for the day at 18. So we will continue to deal with the ice. Forecast for Thurs., when I'll be driving to DM's, is for an afternoon of snow followed by rain with temperatures in the mid 30s.
Didn't get any more reading done in IE today. I just wasn't in the mood for reading.
Nancy-I would normally agree about the rain washing off the snow but the temperature plunging to 6 degrees means that all that slush is going to stay ice. It's getting windy out there. Enjoy your breakfast.
Jan-eagerly awaiting results of the swim meet.
Lori-is it you doing all that cooking or are you sharing with friends or relatives? I agree being surrounded by food all day is difficult.
Edesia-the car cleaning when it involves removing ice is even more of a drag. That's part of the reason why I waited for this evening to go to mass. Luckily it did stop raining as forecast. I had my second serving of the garlicky broccoli for a mid-afternoon snack. I'm sitting here thinking about how to avoid binging on the yogurt I am going to get tomorrow. I've binged on it as a replacement for treats after I used them all up. I really want to be able to have it as part of my dairy consumption on a daily basis.
Hi to Kathy.
