This is a thread we had on the WW 50 Year Olds board, so even though most of us have moved beyond our 50's, I am keeping it here. Some prefer to post on Facebook, but for those who may also like to post on something that resembles our old format, I decided to start this. Although we were brought together by our love of books, and we love to share our ideas about books and authors, our friendship has grown, and we know a lot about each others lives. We are spread across the country, and that adds a bit of interest as well, learning about other people's way of life through the "book" they write on the thread.

Carol, when I hear Pinky talking about the farming they do, I realize that these farms are still there, but they are just so different, and their life is very different, but also very different from ours. I have found that one of the things I like about historical fiction is reading about how life was back then. Even reading Boys in the Boat was fascinating because of that part too, as well as the crew team.
It is raining here today, but better rain than snow. I decided to come into my office rather than working from home, even though I hate the drive in the rain. I just didn't want to stay in all day. I did bring my kindle, so even though I have very little to do, I can read. I have the rest of The Plot Against America, and am working my way through Swing Time, which I am undecided about.
I must have tried to find 2 books that I saw on some list through NY Public Library, and they weren't there, but they asked if I wanted them to get them. I got an e-mail that they got them in and put me on the wait list. i guess I wasn't the only one, but that was nice of them.

Hi Robin. I woke up to a little snow here today. It is cold but at least it isn't snowing any longer. I am about half way thriybg Sandra Brown's Sting. I have read alit of her books and liked many of her older ones better. Sonetimes I think it is just my frame of mind. I hope everyone is doing well. Have a great evening. Any big plans for New Year's? I work so we will stay home.

Hi Friends!!! Sorry I haven't made it on this past week------whew what a whirlwind it has been. Christmas was lovely with our children but at 11:00 a.m. Christmas morning our power went out due to the ice storm that started at 9:30 a.m. Luckily our prime rib was done well enough to eat along with most of our sides. Potatoes and hot vegetables went by the wayside however due to I have an electric stove and oven. Glad I was only feeding my children and their families and not extended family this year. Our power was only out 3 - 3 1/2 hours thankfully but many people not so many miles from us are still without power. Our DS who lives 6 miles from us lost their power during the night of the 25th/26th and were without until the 27th so they stayed at our place. Plus I have had their oldest DD here all week due to no daycare during the Christmas break and add their DS's 1st birthday was yesterday and our youngest DS's 28th birthday is today. Tomorrow our DDIL has her surgery for a herniated belly button so I will have their 2 y/old along with the 6 week old twins tomorrow-----YIKES!!!! Glad 6 y/old DGD will be here to help entertain the 2 year old. Also our DD's family stayed an extra day from Christmas due to the icy road conditions. Sorry about the OMG it is crazy around here sob story but thought I would let you know what has been happening around here. On top to this DH is always trying to have bookwork in order for year end so he knows if he needs to spend more money for expenses or sell some crops we hold back in bins to balance income/expense for the year better. So it goes with the other farmers and many are stopping by to purchase next years seed also. So this pretty well sums up that I have not been reading at all. We are however thankful that the ice did not take down our fences so that our cattle could get out. Also thankful for the family time we had at Christmas.
I did catch up on all the posts yesterday and was interrupted about the time I was going to post and thought I would get back here but never did. So now I do not really remember things I was going to say and should go back but didn't want the same scenario. I do remember one very exciting shout-out to:
Anngie---- Congrats on your Grandma news---so exciting! It is just the best thing in the world(I say this as I am being rather overwhelmed with grandma duty right now LOL), but it is just the greatest thing in the world. Have fun with this exciting time in your lives. Bet your car will know the way to and from in a short period of time.
Also Carol2-----thinking of you today as you have your foot surgery. What exactly did you have done to it??? Wishing you a speedy recovery.
Robin---so agree with better rain than snow unless it freezes like it did here and it is still treacherous to walk out side in many places. It has neared 32 degrees most days but just not enough to do any melting. The roads are clear so that is good.
Waving hi to everyone and hope I did not miss anyone else's excitement in the past week---if I did please remind me!!!!

Pinky, glad you filled us in on the craziness of your life, I am not surprised at all seeing as I saw on the news that the weather there has been really bad. I agree that ice is much worse than snow. We have had that quite a number of times, but most of the time the ice melts fast enough, that doesn't always happen, plus we have a lot of large trees around, and when the ice gets on them, it can be terrible. Glad you seem to be taking it well, and I am sure you are enjoying those kids.
Jill, sorry you have to work New Year's Eve and won't be able to go out. Is your dad still in the hospital? I agree that sometimes when things are very stressful you just can't read.
We have friends who always have a bunch of us over for a gourmet sit down dinner on New Year's Eve. We normally only bring wine, but this year I am buying some baguettes too for one of the courses. We have been doing this for over 10 years. Twice they asked us to make the dinner instead of them, but it is really there thing, so I don't want to step on toes by inviting anyone first. Not to mention I am happy not to do it. We are having them all though on February 11th. We have yet to work out a menu, but I have some ideas. I save some things on Pinterest, and one in particular is a mushroom potato casserole side dish that I would like to figure out something to make with.
I pretty much finished The Plot Against America. At the end, there is a chapter that gives the real history of what went on in chronological order. The book is an alternative history of what would have happened if a particular pro-Hitler person was elected President of the US in 1940 instead of FDR. Very interesting.
