United States Traditions & Customs That Surprise Non-Americans • Different Sales Tax Throughout the Country: You'll pay vastly different amounts of sales tax on the same item depending on where you buy it in the US. In fact, you could pay a different amount of sales tax depending on where you are in the state, since counties and cities can levy sales tax, too. In many other countries around the world, VAT (value-added tax) is much more common and is incorporated into the final price of the item. • Opening Gifts in Front of the Giver: From birthday parties and baby showers to holidays such as Christmas, people in the US consider it customary to open a gift in front of the person who gave the gift. This gives the giver a chance to see your reaction and receive immediate thanks. In some countries, opening a gift in front of the person who gave it to you is offensive because it makes you look greedy. • Hugging & Shaking Hands in Greeting: When Americans greet strangers and colleagues, they almost always shake hands. When people in the US greet close friends and family members, they hug. Americans do not generally kiss anyone other than a partner or child as a greeting.

By not harming living beings one is called noble." 19. "If a man going down into a river, swollen and swiftly flowing, is carried away by the current — how can he help others across?" 20. In a theater class in college, the instructor taught/shared ways to be calm, to relax, to get past stage fright or nervousness. One of them was very much like this sleep method. The narration started from the feet up and the visualization was to feeling a sensation of calming warmth to relax the muscles.
Compassion for self - I'm doing the best I can at this point in time. Is there something I can learn for the future? Am I being tougher on myself than I would on a friend? (I know I've heard and read variations of that last one in WW materials - If we are angry or such with ourselves, instead of using negative language, think of how we'd lift up a friend.)

I know first hand about the sales tax thing. I live in TN & we have one of the highest sales tax in the nation. We pay 9.75% on most everything. We even have tax on food! I think there is only one other state that has as high sales tax as we do. We don't have a state income tax, so they make up with it through the sales tax.
I am preparing to get rid of a lot of my personal posessions, downsizing with everything. I realize that I really need very little.
I am very compassionate toward myself. I accept myself the way that I am. No longer blaming myself over & over about my weight & other things.

I have read in books that military are able to nap at the drop of a hat and wake at the sound of anything unusual coming their way...perhaps it is only in books it is true, though?
• What are you learning to let go of? * I think I learned to let go about many things awhile ago. I don't worry about having things perfect, don't worry about wearing makeup, don't worry about a LOT of things...I remember keeping clothing for decades even though I seldom wore it and finally started purging things - even designer outfits - because I wasn't willing to carry them along with me any more and wanted to "clean the closet" and make it full of what I would reach for and wear gladly any time any day.
• What are some ways you can show compassion toward yourself? * I prepare healthy meals
* I don't beat myself up for off program over points days * I accept my body as it is and thank it for doing all that it does
* I am grateful for who and what I am and accept and am thankful for the life experiences that have come my way to help me become that person
