Welcome to Alcohol Free is What We Want To Be!We are glad you are here with us! If you have been struggling with your weight and have found this board you undoubtedly have your own unique, complicated relationship with alcohol and food. Laying out the problem honestly can give you the extra push you need to succeed in getting it under control. A few questions for you to think about...do you wake up at 3 AM wondering what did you do? Do you sometimes have no recall of the evening before or do you try to recover your memory of the evening before you even get out of bed? Is your spouse angry with you...or do you simply think that A is taking over too much of your life, affecting your weight loss? These are hard questions but know that you will find understanding, love, encouragement and support on this thread. We are each in a different stage of this journey but you will find others have shared your experiences. There is no judgment, just an acknowledgement that we have been there, done that. This board of great people will support you in your journey.
Some of us have been here for several years, others are new, but all are welcome and if you have visited before but didn't stay, there is still and always a place for you. Don't get overwhelmed, take your time, if something strikes you, respond. We are great at giving advice, whether you want it or not....you will get tough love, if necessary, but you will also find help. We practice positive self-talk and support, we encourage and gently hold each other accountable. We each have stories to tell, share and suggestions to help. We post different challenges during the year. Please join us if you think this is the group for you. You will be glad you did.

November 1 -December 31 Happy Holidays Challenge
The holidays are fast approaching and with them comes the joy and drama. While we want to be filled with gratitude, we often find ourselves filled with hurt or anger. The expectations of a perfect holiday create unrealistic expectations. As corny as it can sound, we lose sight of the "reason for the season”.
We spend time counting points, counting calories, exercising, checking the number on the scale. Then the holidays arrive! We overload our bodies with junk food and alcohol and add pills to make the headaches and stomach aches go away. Do we see the dichotomy?
Our beliefs, our life style, provide an anchor for us. It gives us a sense of being grounded, having a purpose. Holidays arrive and we try to stay anchored. Then someone decides to challenge our beliefs, lifestyle. The oh come on, one drink won’t hurt, or it’s Mom’s pie recipe …you’ll hurt her feelings if you don’t try it or your political views are wrong, here is the stress you don’t want or need! Movies use family dinners with jokes of when are you getting married, when are you having children, when are you going to settle down with a real job….and it all gets resolved with smiles and everyone on neutral ground. Think “While You were Sleeping”….not “Home Alone.”
The purpose of this challenge is to stay anchored during the holidays and fill our lives with Love and Lose the things in our lives that cause stress, anger and pain. Let us go into 2025 feeling good, even great physically, emotionally and spiritually.
Though we say we are “comfortable" with the holiday scenario….crazy Uncle Freddie is going to get drunk, Aunt Wilma is going to make that awful ambrosia, another soap on a rope gift…we don’t have to accept it. This does not serve us well. This does not make us happy. This does not make us the person we want to be. Let’s walk away from their issues.
Lose the angry people. Do not get dragged into a confrontation. Say “well bless your heart” and walk away. Blow them a kiss for good measure.
Lose getting guilted to eat food. Bring something you want to eat to family dinners, enough to share but to help you stay on track and feel good about yourself.
Lose 24 hour news TV. Listening to pundits and comedians spout off, does not lift one’s spirit. Use news alerts and headlines then decide if you want more information.
Lose the people….for awhile….go out for a walk, breathe fresh air, sit and be by yourself.
Lose the stuff that just doesn’t work in your life. It takes time. Letting go of what is hurting you is more difficult than letting go of clothes that do not fit….though there might be a connection.
Lose the guilt for doing what you truly want to do. Follow your heart.
Lose the regrets…the "should of, would of, wish I could of" does not help or change things. At the time it was what needed to be.
Lose being the “go to person” for everything….no is a powerful word.
NOW Love it!
Love yourself first. Get/stay healthy, lose the weight, stop the drinking, your journey is unfolding.
Love new traditions….not everything has to be made from scratch for one. Go out to eat. Stop with the tomato aspic, no one wants it. Put a $ limit on gifts and no gift cards.
Love a potluck dinner not the big production meal.
Love sitting and watching a roaring fire while listening to music.
Love something you want to share with others.
It is good to remember your past but don’t cheat your future.
Let go of anger, let go of the need to do more. You are doing your best and that’s enough.
You are not the shape of your body or the number on the scale. You are loved for you!
You have blessings in your life and remember you are a Blessing. Just ask anyone of us.

Good Morning all. Happy Monday and election day eve. Going to try to stay away from all the noise today and just take care of me. Have most all my meals and treats tracked for the day and vow to not get into the LO candy . I will probably head to Walmart at some point this morning, mostly for cat food. I've been ordering from Chewy but want to buy a variety of cans to hole us over and then I can also get in my steps while there. It's gray and wet again today but at least the temps are moderate. Cleared up a few things yesterday, still need to take 2 tables out of the car and carry 2 tubs upstairs. I did get 3 different knitting bags sorted and cleaned out. Had all variety of projects in them, odds and ends of yarn, hard to find my tools. Now just have my socks in one small bag with what that needs, and after I finished my hat yesterday, the other bag is ready for a new project. The third is totally empty and can be a grocery bag again . I know all that clutter helps to add to my crazy, so felt good to get some things organized and put away. No other big plans for the day. Hope you all can find a quiet place to hide out the next two days, it's going to be a wild week I'm afraid. I'll check back later. Jan Murphy Hope you brother has a good day and you enjoy the visit. Or at least at are giving DSIL a nice break. Congrats on 100 days AF! Cindy. Hope you get the rain you need. Your BP sounds scary low, is that kind of normal for you? It's not so much I have Christmas presents as I have a lot of projects to give away from the fair, need any beanie hats for anyone . Take care, talk to a Dr. I will probably go straight to Christmas mantle if DH will let me, ha ha. Cathy. Always nice when you don't have to cook. I have a lot of veggies I need to roast up, brussels, broccoli, delicata and a sweet potato. Maybe get that on my list today or tomorrow for sure. Hope you find a good new book to read. Amy Hope you find us today . Is this one of your exercise days? Gray and gloomy here too. Waving hi

Here at my brother's. He said he had a bad day yesterday but is feeling ok this morning. It's sunny here so we might get out and go for a drive if he wants to.
Jan - hope your weather clears up. I bought my family members the same present! I found these really soft blankets and just got one for each of them! They will be able to use them anyway! I will plan to make my peanut brittle for everyone as well and will do a few very small gifts for a few friends.
Cindy - hope you get some rain today. Where is your SIL located? That is a very low BP! Maybe at least put in a call to your doctor?
Amy - glad you had a good time at Six Flags. I went there one time as a teenager and didn't realize it was still open! Hope you have a great day!
Cathy - glad you got to talk to the family. Roasted veggies sound good. I have a head of cabbage. I've seen pics of cabbage "steaks" and I bed that would be good too.
Hope everyone has a fabulous day! Murphy

Oops about posting on Saturday instead of Sunday. Yesterday DH & I took the golf cart to the top of the hill to walk yesterday. It remained gloomy but was nice weather for walking. When we got back I puttered outside, picked a few green beans and cherry tomatoes, planted cilantro , rosemary, a couple of pansies. I watered what needed watering and took the Halloween lights off the bushes and took the ghosts and witch hats down. Then lunch and couch time. DH grilled a steak for dinner which we had with baked potato and green beans. A lot of TV was watched yesterday. I was tired when I went to bed and didn't have any trouble falling asleep.
It's gloomy again today, not much chance of rain, and we are supposed to get some sun. When I took the witches down from the porch hooks, I rehung the Boston ferns. I'm enjoying watching them sway and turn in the breeze.
Murphy- Thanks for getting us started. Your snowmen in the kitchen sound cheerful and those white snowman trees are cute. WTG 100 days AF. Yay for a sunny day, enjoy your visit with your brother.
Jan- WTG steps, PU, AP, blue dot, AF, sorting out knitting bags. It's tough to avoid the treats when they are close at hand. Glad you got some ideas for the next fair. Sorry about the cold and rainy weather and the store being so busy. Happy election day eve! No workout classes for me today.
Cindy- Hope you get the rain you need. Yay for DSIL moving into her new apartment. Be careful with the dizziness and low B/P. Do you think you could be dehydrated?
Cathy- Glad you were able to talk to your son and granddaughters. Yay for leftovers and finishing a book.

Happy Holidays and welcome to the New Year!
Hello, hello, hello! Wow, can you believe it is November and 2024 is almost over. I have a feeling it is going out with a bang, and not sure if it will be a good one or not so good. Cannot wait for the election to be over one way or another. There just seems to be so much tension, and we have decided not to discuss it even in my immediate family since we are on opposite sides. So to keep peace we talk about everything else but that, lol and that makes for a happier family. I am a little late beginning to post on this challenge, but I have been staying with DD a few days while her DH was away. My eating has been good and now I just have to rein in the A. I did have 1 ANIM day when DN and DSIL came to visit DD, that darned socializing gets me every time. I wasn't sh@t faced, but was relaxed. What's done is done, now I need the fairy dust to be sprinkled. I have been doing some serious Christmas shopping for the grands, mostly clothes, and just a few toys. I have been mostly working on DSIL's blanket, I have 9 more skeins to go to finish which better be by the end of the month. Then I have to knit a few Santa hat for a few kiddos.
I just realized that my Medicare supplement plan that I have through my employer does provide for fitness reimbursement, originally I was told by our HR department that it didn't but after going onto my plan on my laptop, I was pleasantly surprised. So something in the back of my mind and might start looking at my options for the first of the year.
Will catch up and do personals tomorrow. Have a wonderful, peaceful night!

We have errands to run later this morning. Not sure what lunch will be but will figure that out later. Might get together with Rosalie tomorrow. Need to write a review for the book finished last night. And...will avoid the news as much as possible. Might check it a few times but not every second.
Hope you all sleep well and wake refreshed in the morning.
