Welcome to Alcohol Free is What We Want To Be!We are glad you are here with us! If you have been struggling with your weight and have found this board you undoubtedly have your own unique, complicated relationship with alcohol and food. Laying out the problem honestly can give you the extra push you need to succeed in getting it under control. A few questions for you to think about...do you wake up at 3 AM wondering what did you do? Do you sometimes have no recall of the evening before or do you try to recover your memory of the evening before you even get out of bed? Is your spouse angry with you...or do you simply think that A is taking over too much of your life, affecting your weight loss? These are hard questions but know that you will find understanding, love, encouragement and support on this thread. We are each in a different stage of this journey but you will find others have shared your experiences. There is no judgment, just an acknowledgement that we have been there, done that. This board of great people will support you in your journey.
Some of us have been here for several years, others are new, but all are welcome and if you have visited before but didn't stay, there is still and always a place for you. Don't get overwhelmed, take your time, if something strikes you, respond. We are great at giving advice, whether you want it or not....you will get tough love, if necessary, but you will also find help. We practice positive self-talk and support, we encourage and gently hold each other accountable. We each have stories to tell, share and suggestions to help. We post different challenges during the year. Please join us if you think this is the group for you. You will be glad you did.

November 1 -December 31 Happy Holidays Challenge
The holidays are fast approaching and with them comes the joy and drama. While we want to be filled with gratitude, we often find ourselves filled with hurt or anger. The expectations of a perfect holiday create unrealistic expectations. As corny as it can sound, we lose sight of the "reason for the season”.
We spend time counting points, counting calories, exercising, checking the number on the scale. Then the holidays arrive! We overload our bodies with junk food and alcohol and add pills to make the headaches and stomach aches go away. Do we see the dichotomy?
Our beliefs, our life style, provide an anchor for us. It gives us a sense of being grounded, having a purpose. Holidays arrive and we try to stay anchored. Then someone decides to challenge our beliefs, lifestyle. The oh come on, one drink won’t hurt, or it’s Mom’s pie recipe …you’ll hurt her feelings if you don’t try it or your political views are wrong, here is the stress you don’t want or need! Movies use family dinners with jokes of when are you getting married, when are you having children, when are you going to settle down with a real job….and it all gets resolved with smiles and everyone on neutral ground. Think “While You were Sleeping”….not “Home Alone.”
The purpose of this challenge is to stay anchored during the holidays and fill our lives with Love and Lose the things in our lives that cause stress, anger and pain. Let us go into 2025 feeling good, even great physically, emotionally and spiritually.
Though we say we are “comfortable" with the holiday scenario….crazy Uncle Freddie is going to get drunk, Aunt Wilma is going to make that awful ambrosia, another soap on a rope gift…we don’t have to accept it. This does not serve us well. This does not make us happy. This does not make us the person we want to be. Let’s walk away from their issues.
Lose the angry people. Do not get dragged into a confrontation. Say “well bless your heart” and walk away. Blow them a kiss for good measure.
Lose getting guilted to eat food. Bring something you want to eat to family dinners, enough to share but to help you stay on track and feel good about yourself.
Lose 24 hour news TV. Listening to pundits and comedians spout off, does not lift one’s spirit. Use news alerts and headlines then decide if you want more information.
Lose the people….for awhile….go out for a walk, breathe fresh air, sit and be by yourself.
Lose the stuff that just doesn’t work in your life. It takes time. Letting go of what is hurting you is more difficult than letting go of clothes that do not fit….though there might be a connection.
Lose the guilt for doing what you truly want to do. Follow your heart.
Lose the regrets…the "should of, would of, wish I could of" does not help or change things. At the time it was what needed to be.
Lose being the “go to person” for everything….no is a powerful word.
NOW Love it!
Love yourself first. Get/stay healthy, lose the weight, stop the drinking, your journey is unfolding.
Love new traditions….not everything has to be made from scratch for one. Go out to eat. Stop with the tomato aspic, no one wants it. Put a $ limit on gifts and no gift cards.
Love a potluck dinner not the big production meal.
Love sitting and watching a roaring fire while listening to music.
Love something you want to share with others.
It is good to remember your past but don’t cheat your future.
Let go of anger, let go of the need to do more. You are doing your best and that’s enough.
You are not the shape of your body or the number on the scale. You are loved for you!
You have blessings in your life and remember you are a Blessing. Just ask anyone of us.

Yoga was good yesterday, I think my leg/hip issue is pretty much back to normal. It was still raining when yoga was over so I came home and did a walking video in the basement while I was still warmed up and limber. I played online until it was time for the nutrition consult. I like the dietician a lot, she was very informative and encouraging, and also encouraged a lot of questions. She gave me guidelines based on my height, weight, and level of activity, said we should check in about once a month and said I could message her with any questions that come up. She's a big fan of beans for the protein and fiber content. She recommended that I eat less fat, more carbs, and don't need as much protein as I've been getting. I need to rethink my daily routine to see what all this means. I'm going to list her recommendations for me, keep in mind it might not apply to everyone.
Calories: 1300-1500 Protein: 70-90 grams, minimum of 55 grams Carbs: 40-60% Fiber: 25-30 grams Fat: 25% or less
After the consult, I had some couch time, did my weight workout, made gumbo for dinner from a dried mix. I added shrimp and turkey smoked sausage. After dinner I watched a Christmas movie and stitched on the toy soldier.
It's warmer today and the sun is out. It's in the mid-60's and I don't think it will get much warmer as a cold front is coming. We'll be in the 30's by tomorrow morning.
Liz- WTG biking, not a bad eating day, AIM. Yay for being happy with your haircut and maintaining it every 6 weeks. That's what I'm doing too. I am also looking forward to Outlander and the last book, although will be sad when it's over. I guess we have the prequels (show and books) to look forward to.
Jan- Glad it was a good day, WTG picking up Rx and brace. I like crullers too. I finally did a Me360 scan, hadn't done it since August. All my measurements went down and the image compared to when I started was good to see. I'm still wearing some of the pants I had in January, which is discouraging.
Cindy- That does sound like a scam at the grocery store. Hope you feel more rested today.
Cathy- Hope you enjoyed the luncheon, have fun with cards with Rosalie. BOT tomorrow!

Happy Holidays and welcome to the New Year! Good morning all. I will get cleaned up in a bit and head over to coffee with my friends. It’s gray this morning but dry, they are saying maybe 3” of snow overnight so will see if there is knitting tomorrow. The roads should be clear but I”ll bet some of the ladies will stay home if there are messy roads. After coffee I have a few things to get at Aldi’s since that is right near the Hardees we go to. Of course will have to check out the Aisle of Shame as it’s the new week for fun things . No other plans after that. Talking myself into running the steam mop in the little downstairs bathroom and back door area. If I do it too early, I’ll just have to do it again next week before company ha ha but it needs to be done so I guess it wouldn’t kill me if I have to do it twice! I”m going to do some baking when I get home, some blueberry buttermilk bread, going to do the small loaves again so I can freeze some. Finished a good book last night called Tending Roses. About a grandma Rose that still lives in the family farmhouse alone and the kids who feel she needs to be in a home as she’s had some issues. A touching story about dealing with aging parents,, community, family dynamics. Something I just picked up at the thrift store. Now to find something new to read from my giant stack next to the bed. Guess I better get moving so I can shower and have some breakfast before heading out. Have a great day all. Jan Well after I wrote this much I had a disaster in the kitchen. Dropped a bowl that had thawed blueberries in it that I was trying to get to add to my apples for breakfast. Blue syrup and mess exploded everywhere, floor, inside the fridge, on the cupboards etc. Did the best cleaning I could do, think I got most everything up before it stained the floor tiles or anywhere. Uggh. Maybe today should have been the bad day . All good enough for now, sure I'll keep finding splatters for awhile but still got to coffee, not too late. Hope you all have had a better morning. J Cathy Enjoy your day with Rosalie, A New Year and New resolve is right around the corner. We can do thins. Cindy The grocery store adventure sounded interesting. Sure the clerk and the store appreciates your head’s up so they could deal with it. Hope you got a good night’s sleep. Have you convinced DS to see a Dr? Amy. Love the little soldier and I saw the new yarn you found. Is the green bright enough to do some sort of grinch? Glad you leg and hip are feeling better and that yoga was fun. Was interesting what the nutritionist recommended. I'll be interested to see what WW figure out about macros and how they will adjust peoples based on weight and gender I'd suppose. I almost always make my egg burrito (wrap) in the morning with refried beans or DH homemade beans with my eggs and cheese. Yay for a good 360, I think I will now wait until the end of the year to do another one so I have my new starting place in January. Going to try a little knitting. Will check in later.

Hi All!
Wish I had gotten more sleep but so be it....caught up with Sudoko and a cozy mystery. I probably should leave all electronics away from my bedroom!
My car needed an inspection. The last year for inspections for our area though emissions testing will be required. The place I normally go to is under new management. I was asked to drive my car into the bay, stayed in it until they got all my info, then went to the waiting room. Umm, okay. The tech came out and told me all was done. The usual place is not where I pay...but out in the bay area. I have cash, they can't accept cash so I pulled out my credit card....then I drove my car out of the bay. I am use to just turning over my keys and then having them bring my car to the front door of the waiting room. Car passed so it is done. I must be getting old (er).
Was going to go to Costco afterwards but it was jammed in the parking lot. Today was the first day of the new ad but seriously! I'm going to try tomorrow. I really just need basics and worse case will just pay more at the grocery store.
DS did go to Urgent Care and was given pain pills, told to see the orth doc and the diagnosis was knee sprain. He said he is doing better but he gets really loopy with pills and talks!....he very really takes anything. So back to heating pad and try staying off it as much as possible. The brace I had for him is sufficient so that was a plus.
I think I'm going to have to turn the heat on tonight. It never got out of the fifties and is suppose to be in the thirties tonight. Since I had to go upstairs to adjust the thermostat found i could walk up and down normally though creaky.
Amy, thanks for getting us going. Love the soldier! It is amazing! Glad your hip and leg are doing better! Thanks for sharing the recommendations. Glad the dietician had great suggestions and is more than willing to be there for you. Going to use them as a guideline and see how I measure up though right now I don't measure up in any area!
Jan, I feel for you and the blueberry disaster! I swear I'm still finding splatters from a bottle of soy sauce I broke. Did you make it to Aldi's? Find anything interesting? I hope the snow doesn't last so that you can make it to knitting. How is your wrist feeling? I think I will look for "Tending Rose" to read. I've been on the look out for a book for my DSIL for Christmas but just might not go with it because I really don't know what she reads at this point. Trying to make a cozy gift for her.
Vicki, thanks for asking me about eating. I'm not great at it. Still like my Ritz crackers. I lost 9 lbs during the "whatever" bug and I don't suggest it for anyone. I'm bouncing around 170...up a pound, down a pound. Would love to be 165, if not lower, by the end of the year and then go from there. Yesterday I never ate and never thought about it till about 3 AM. Need to get on a better routine. At least my BP is doing better. How are you feeling?
Liz, yay for a great haircut! Woot for keeping up doing the bike! Hope you had a jammie day!
Cathy, your luncheon contribution looked delicious. Hope you had a wonderful time and a wonderful time with Rosalie.
Going to try Costco tomorrow and if too crowded just do a Walmart run. Just don't want to deal with crowds. Just need basics household goods but would also get some other stuff like eggs, butter, flour tortillas....and anything that jumps out at me.
Going to take a shower and hopefully warm up....yup, the heat is going on tonight!
Hugs to all, Cindy
