Thinking Mistake #8: Justification
You link two unrelated concepts (to justify your eating).
"I deserve to eat this because I'm so stressed out."
"It's okay to this because it's free."

It's good to understand that nothing is free not even the 0 point foods. That's why food has to be eaten in moderation. You deserve food if you have the points for it; otherwise, you are just fooling yourself. It may be better to rephrase deserve to earn. You can earn something if you have planned to fit it on your points.

Yes, Justification creeps into my brain, even though I know it is bogus. I am trying to be rational about eating: I am at a weight where I don't need to be as strict as I used to be when losing. I need to remember that I can incorporate a few "snacky" type things, and I don't need to justify them. It's OK as long as I maintain my goal and my health sustains (digestive woes at times of poor eating.)

I deserve to eat or drink something special that has a high points value just because it's a holiday. There's never a holiday from eating and drinking mindfully. I have learned that one off-plan choice leads to another. I refuse to use the words good and bad when it comes to food and what I eat anymore.

I don't usually think I deserve something as much as I think it's okay to eat another Christmas cookie because they are only here once a year. Being off plan, no matter what the reason, is not a good habit. It's one I'm currently working on. Staying on plan every day. It's okay to have a special food or snack but I need to put it into my plan and track it.

I am really focusing in on my sense of entitlement and "deserving" to eat off-plan, un-planned food. The other evening I was thinking about how I had 4 points left and I should have something to eat. I wasn't really hungry. The day was over. It was about an hour before bedtime. The only reason I wanted to eat was because I had 4 points available. THIN PERSON jumped up and said this was all BS. That's THIN PERSON's role in life: To call out BS when she sees it. That evening she was alert and on the job.

ladymajky - there was an interesting discussion last night with pamthomas46 about lowering your DP: Pam said: I'm a meetings member who eats from the simply filling list but do track using SP. Here in Denver last fall they had an experiment where they tested our metabolism and I was encouraged to cut back my daily points. This has made a difference for me. I'm planning to stay at that range and keep doing what I know works. WW brought in equipment and scheduled time slots for those who signed up. The tester, a WW leader, then went over the results with me. Because I'm older and not able to be as active, I wasn't surprised. Just glad that my DPs seem to be more realistic. Hope that answers your questions. I haven't heard that WW was going to expand the experiment." Her leader recommended she lower her DP from 30-26 and she's done better. I'm going to check more on the simply filling list . Did you do simply filling too last year? Check out the thread at: Changes link

My big justification is: I've gotten away with it before I can do it again.

Linda -- Every so often I do Simply Filling for a while. I also track points while doing SF. When I follow SF closely, I usually notice that I use more in the range of 25-26 points instead of my assigned 30 points. I assume that this is an indicator that I will do just fine on 25-26 points if I choose my food wisely. And wasn't that the whole point of SF in the first place?
I'm doing SF right now. I started it again after my last weigh-in last Wednesday. It generally takes me a week or so to get my brain and my habits switched around to an SF mode. It takes just small tweaks to get switched. Over the weekend I took my phone barcode scanner through the pantry and marked everything that is an SF power food. There is more on the power food list than I realized.

ladymajky ,I like how you used your barcode scanner in your pantry.I don't use my app but that's an excellent way to do it. I don't know if I really tell myself I deserve a certain food.I do justify eating out sometimes when we are running late and say it's running late so why don't we stop at "fill in the blank."That happened today after Curves and grocery shopping so we stopped at McDonald's and I did get a salad but it was just the whole I don't have time to grill my chicken on the Foreman for lunch thing.

Count me in on the "it's the holidays and this treat only comes along once a year so, yanno, it's okay to eat it, I'll get back OP tomorrow, next week, next month..."
I do think it's okay to partake of those once a year treats that we might associate with a particular holiday, but it's all about moderation and not going after mass quantities of those treats for an entire "festive season"! My stumble this year was that I allowed myself to celebrate and eat what I wanted to most of the time, because it was the holidays and I was home and it was festive and why the hell not? And now it's January 2nd and I'm back OP as of today, but now I have to do a lot more work to get back to where I was on the scale before Thanksgiving. It was fun at the time, but it's not much fun having to re lose those pounds again, I need to remember that next year!
