We are a group of like-minded people that gather to discuss a host of topics from weight loss, to current events. Our thread celebrates liberal diversity, welcomes new friends, and respects all opinions. We count everything from calories to points but, we never count our chickens before they are hatched.

Just feel sick over the horrible, senseless slaughter in Las Vegas. How long are we going to allow this sort of thing to go on? How did we ever get to a place where such a thing would ever even be conceivable? We do nothing and allow mass killings, and Congress also does nothing and allowed CHIP the Children's Health Insurance Program to expire. What sort of society have we become? I don't know the motives of that gunman. I don't know if he was political. But I do know that we have allowed hatred and violence to become a part of our "normal" world. I also know that the JA in the WH fans the flames of that hatred and divisiveness on a daily basis. I know that politicians in Washington have become more concerned about lining their own pockets and pumping up their own egos than they are in working for the American people, and thus many, many children have no healthcare this morning even as many in Las Vegas have been senselessly slaughtered leaving nothing but heartbreak in the wake.

Will it stop...HA, I doubt it. It gets "talked to death" no pun intended, but then we go back to same old same old til it happens again. Everyone is outraged, "talked to death" again...and on it goes. Nothing happens, & each time it worse than before! Shame on us as a nation that we can't get this under control. 😡😡😡😡😡

No " huge, beautiful, best ever," wall or " extreme vetting"immigration laws could have prevented this. We need to focus within our borders & the hate filled normal, as Joyce described....just so sad!

Just learned that one of the people killed in the Las Vegas shooting has a family connection for me although a distant one. He was the grandson of my father's cousin. I didn't know him, but I remember his grandmother who is now deceased. So there was no close connection, but still it makes you stop and think that this can happen to anyone of us. No one is immune. We MUST do something to prevent such senseless slaughter. How does a 64 year old man simply decide to do such a thing? There has to be a way that the likelihood of this could have been identified and stopped.

"Warmest condolences?" What the heck is that?! Cold comfort to those families. A little sincerity, and genuine effort towards stopping this madness would be far more appreciated. Who ever heard of sending warmest condolences? It doesn't even sound vaguely sincere. Is that the absolute best his speech writers are capable of doing?

I wasn't particularly impressed with the speech either. Only because, I know he doesn't talk that way & probably had no input whatsoever. It was totally prepared for him. Having said that, no matter who gives these types of speeches & some do it so much better than others, it's just words until Congress acts & passes laws on gun control that will actually help this problem much better than its being handed now. We need ACTION not just comforting words. And, honestly, if this had not been a white male, JA would have been tweeting up a storm about terrorists. Until, people & the Current Prez finally acknowledge that our own "white" citizens can be terrorists & not just " very fine people" the racial hatred coming towards other skin color when this happens, probably won't change in these types of situations. It will be interesting to hear, if ever we do, the motivation for this guy!
Joyce, no matter whether you knew this person, it still hits home because he was a family member.

Slate.com.... Chris Murphy, now a Connecticut senator, represented the House district that includes Newtown, Connecticut, when 20 children and six adults were shot to death at Sandy Hook Elementary School. He has since been one of Congress’ foremost advocates of gun control legislation, prominently conducting a 15-hour filibuster to protest inaction on the subject after the Pulse nightclub massacre in Orlando, Florida. His response to the news that at least 50 people were killed and 400 injured by a heavily armed man in Las Vegas on Sunday night was direct:
This must stop. It is positively infuriating that my colleagues in Congress are so afraid of the gun industry that they pretend there aren't public policy responses to this epidemic. There are, and the thoughts and prayers of politicians are cruelly hollow if they are paired with continued legislative indifference. It's time for Congress to get off its ass and do something. The Las Vegas shooter has been identified as 64-year-old Stephen Paddock, a Nevada man who was found dead by police on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay casino. It’s not yet clear how he obtained the weapons used in the shooting.

Andy Borowitz....... So the Republicans are trying to pass something called "The Hearing Protection Act," which would make it easier to buy gun silencers -- an excellent idea, because I do not want my hearing impacted in any way while I am being randomly killed.

Just Horrific about Las Vegas. I phoned Chris to thank him for addressing the issue immediately, but where is Blumenthal?
If anyone wants to phone him to give a thumbs up:

"It's time for Congress to get off its ass and do something." Well said Senator Murphy! You must make your Connecticut constituents proud. If only the rest of our elected officials would start speaking out with their votes rather than bowing down to the NRA.
That those in Washington refuse to even consider SENSIBLE gun control infuriates me. I don't know how this man got his guns. Maybe he got them all completely legally, but there must have been some clues somewhere that he was capable of this. I refuse to accept that nothing can be done. Nobody wants to ban all guns as the GOP and the NRA want to try and portray those of us who are begging for gun control, but there is a sensible way to allow sports enthusiasts to have a gun or someone who feels they need one for safety (what a sad world we live in there!) and still control the unbridled spread of guns particularly automatic weapons.

" Nobody wants to ban all guns " I do! But like my dear old Mom would say, "Keep dreaming."

Linda, I like your new avatar. What is that old saying that a picture is worth a thousand words. That picture speaks eloquently.
Pat, I don't want to ban all guns, but I understand your point. I do want sensible gun control. If it were left solely up to me, there would be no more guns period, but I know that there are good people who enjoy them as a hobby, have them for security, etc. Until we get rid of soft money in politics, and Congress grows a backbone and stands up to the NRA nothing is going to ever happen for any kind of gun control no matter how sensible.
