I remember when they were in the malls, offering free "tests" or readings or something that seemed really innocuous and then people were finding out it was Scientology after they gave them most of their information.

They give free personality tests. That's how they pull you in - they identify something in your personality that needs improvement and hey, here's a class that can help you with that! And another, and another . . .
Cults fascinate me. Don't even get me started on the Duggars and their ilk. . .

I read Leah's book, and found it fascinating. I am glad she got out, and feel for her and others that were dragged into it as young kids, in particular. It's not like she had a choice in the matter, at all. And even the adults that get sucked in are getting nabbed by masters at emotional and psychological manipulation.

I've watched all the episodes, and they confirm things I've heard or suspected about Scientology. At first I was a bit apprehensive about the show, but the more I watched the more fascinated I became. The episode where the lady and her husband were in the Sea Org and she was forced to have an abortion was particularly sad.

P.S. Why would this thread get poofed? People post about all kinds of controversial subjects.

I'm enjoying this series too. I've been fascinated with this topic for a few years now, and wonder how it's possible that people actually fall for this church, especially the celebrities. It just all seems so crazy!

If anyone is interested in learning more on the subject, I'm currently reading Jenna Miscavige Hill's book "Beyond Belief" about growing up in the Sea Org and her eventual escape (she's David Miscavige's niece). It's a little long but very interesting so far and an easy read. The way kids are treated/raised in the Sea Org is really unbelievable.

I liked the question and answer episode that aired last week.

I just saw an article that showed famous celebrities that are Scientologists. I was surprised to see Greta Van Susteren and her husband are members of the Church of Scientology. She just got a new TV gig on MSNBC.

Alias,
I was surprised too when I found out about Greta. I watched her on Fox and now MSNBC, and she seems to be a voice of reason. Who knew?

Yeah, Catherine Bell was disappointing. I looked up politicians. There are not a lot who claim not to be members but they are "supporters" of the church. Sonny Bono was the only Senator who was listed as a full member.
But there are several politicians who have taken thousands of dollars in support of the church and then have spoken out on the misjustices against the church on their own time.
Really makes you wonder how far this thing goes.
